Marquette will host the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, October 31 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The men won the race last year in NY with a record low score. They should be challenged this year by Syracuse (ugh), Providence, and Villanova, and possibly Notre Dame. The Hoyas are the highest ranked team at 10th with Syracuse next at 14th. Strangely, regionally Providence is ranked ahead of Syracuse in the Northeast. Villanova is right behind the Hoyas in the Middle Atlantic.
On the women's side the Hoyas will have their hands filled with Villanova, ranked #2 nationally, and West Virginia, ranked #4. In addition, Syracuse (another ugh) is ranked right behind the Hoyas nationally at #10. Notre Dame and Providence always field good teams.
The men will not have raced in a month at the time of the BE race. So they might not be so sharp as some of the other teams. This will probably help the Hoyas in the regions and at the NCAA champs, but might make the BE race a little dicey.

I believe the men's XC BE win last year was the only Big East title for the Hoyas for the 2008-9 school year. The men have a chance to duplicate that effort this year, but I expect more BE titles this year (especially men's bball!).

I agree with you Nevada. We have a real strong team - I know our guys are in the weight room more than Cuse, and that Kenosha course is hilly and can be muddy too (used to run it in high school). I think the Cuse ran out of their socks in Madison a few weeks ago and if can get the whole team to run solid the men will be fine. Also agree on the women's team - it will be tough to win - the Big East is quite a beast in Women's Cross.

Good to hear, hoyatrackalum. Syracuse peaked early last year, so they may have done it again. Sounds as if the Kenosha course requires a lot of strength. The only thing I worry about the men is that they will not be sharp, having gone a month without racing. I'm excited about this weekend (and regionals and NCAAs).

Men 2nd beaten by Syracuse, Bumby also beaten--3rd. A pretty disappointing performance, but not surprising given the season to date where only Bumby and denin have performed well. Maybe they are training through the race getting ready for the NCAA. Hopefully it will be a reversal of last yr where they had good seasons until the ncaa and underperformed there, maybe this year they will outperform at the NCAA.

Seems like levi Miller is way behind last yr and that is killing us--I wonder if he is not healed from his injuries--also Taye and roberts have pretty much fallen off the map

It is a disappointed to be beaten by Syracuse in both the men's and women's races.
In the men's race Syracuse scored 55 points with a balanced team, while the Hoyas scored 61 points. The Hoyas were 11 points better than Syracuse when the first three runners from each team crossed the finish line, but a 20th and 25th as the 4 and 5 men hurt us.
3. Bumbi 24:47 5. Mike Krisch 24:56 8. Mark Dennin 25:06 20. Mike Banks 25:42 25. Levi Miller 25:54 32. TC Lumbar 26:02 38. Sandy Roberts 26:11
As reformation has said, Levi, who was all-American in XC last year, has not retained his form from last year and might still be suffering from either injuries or lack of training. Taye did not even run today. If we had our freshmen running, we probably would have won today, but the team is saving them for next year, when we lose some of our best runners.
I think the Hoyas were suffering from taking a month off from racing. I think we will fare better in the regionals and at NCAAs.

As mentioned above the women also lost to Syracuse and came in 4th. Villanova, which is ranked 2nd nationally, won easily scoring a very low 30 points with West Virginia, also in the top 5 nationally, coming in 2nd with 74 points, followed by Cuse at 84 points. The Hoyas scored 92 points.
3. Emily Infeld 21:04 (great run by Emily) 17. Katie McCafferty 21:53 19. Emily Jones 21:56 24. Natasha LaBeaud 22:11 29. Kristen Kasper 22:20 42. Rachel Schneider 22:43 61. Marcie Sobrinski 23:31
Since five out of our first six runners are either freshmen or sophomores, we will be fine next year. Nova has a pretty young team, so we will be fighting them next year too.
Emily Infeld was 3rd behind two Nova runners, but she beat the two West Virginia runners, who must have been co-favorites in this race.

Also a bit of a disappointment by the women, though a great run by Emily Infeld--I would have thought emily jones + McCafferty would do better--but McCafferty is probably just getting back to form and emily jones is getting her first taste of championship running--the women are also hurt by ythe injuries to Tomlin + others--they have a core of three very good young runners--hopefully they can develop one more elite runner and add another recruit for next yr

I think when Kristen Kasper gets a little stronger, she will be good in XC. I think she has the best mile PR of anybody on the team except for Emily Infeld. If we can recruit another elite for next year, the women should be in good shape.
It was a bit of an upset that Bumbi did not win, as he was defending champ. He lost to Cory Thorne of L'ville and a freshman from Nova. Bumbi is supposed to be top 10 at the NCAAs. I hope this race and the regionals will prepare him well for NCAAs. Also, I hear that the course today was muddy from a few days of rain. That fact probably cut into his speed advantage.

Also women might have gotten high as second if Jilian King had not transferred to BC. That turned out to be a big loss for the team. Agree with Nevada that the men would have won if they ran the top frosh, but that would not be worth it given the distribution of top runners on the team---other than rs freshman Dennin they are all sr's or grad students. The inbetween years have a limited number of XC guys.

The course was very bad. There were places, where the standing water was 5-6 inches deep. Other places were very muddy, so footing was a problem. Maybe if the Hoyas ran at Penn State this year in bad conditions, they would have been ready for this. I hope nobody got hurt during the race.

Apparently a quote from Coach Henner: "I thought [Bumbalough] did a great job," Henner said. "I don't want to make excuses for anybody, but if you pick probably the worst conditions that would affect him, I'd say it's this. [With] the mud and muck he [could not] use his great assets, which are his rhythm running and his speed."
