Apparently twitter can be informative, per Father Steck's tweet:
CSteck 4 video tapings last week. 3 for CNDLS (gtown teaching center); one for the new commercial Gtowns producing for TV basketball games. (http://twitter.com/CSteck)
Anyone know if we'll have to wait for the first game to see what they come up with? I apologize if this has been posted somewhere else already...

I think the idea is to create another 30-second commercial for nationally televised events (i.e., basketball). I suspect that the first time any of us see it will be during our first nationally televised game, whenever that is.

Wow. When was the last time they did that? I'm thinking 1997 at the latest.

I can tell you that a lot of it was filmed in the new Hariri Building so it promises to make the school look all new and shiny. My class was filmed so look out I might be a movie star come June if I make it into that commercial ;D

Actually, I think they make a new commercial every year, although the past few years it hasn't changed much. It's always been OK, but kinda blah.
I hope this year's looks good, and I also hope it has at least a brief basketball clip in it as well.

Wow. When was the last time they did that? I'm thinking 1997 at the latest. The one that debuted in the 1999-2000 season caused a minor kerfuffle when one of the brief scenes showed a kid studying in Riggs Library...at the stained glass window depicting the Confederate flag. It was particularly stupid given that Dubya and McCain were ginning up to fight for the South Carolina primary vote and Rev. Jesse, the NAACP, et al., were trying to get the country to boycott the state due to the flag over the statehouse. And there goes Georgetown splashing a big ol' stained-glass Confederate flag on national television for absolutely no reason whatsoever! Seriously, other than for staged photos and commercials, when has a student ever studied in Riggs?!?

The only way we're going to attract new students is if we allow the great Tommy Wiseau to direct.

Just please let the commercial be good. Our current commercial is awful and looks as though it was recorded on my parent's old video camera.
Michigan's commercials are pretty good.
Notre Dame's are well produced, though tremendously cheesy.
Stanford's are, however, the best:
It's too bad we can't get Jonah Nolan and Mike Birbiglia to throw something together. That would be magic.

they were filming on campus Wed/Thurs/Fri last week. they have some footage of jack at the jes res, students in dahlgren quad, inside of dahlgren, and students on the exorcist steps. believe they also got students interning on the Hill. i believe the plan is for it to start with shots of the basketball team. i was told it will NOT be like the old one...they want it a lot more dynamic.
does the commercial usually appear during ESPN games too or only CBS games? also, do they ever show it at Verizon? i didn't think so, but someone asked and i wasn't sure.

Please no more ballerinas, students in monocles sipping tea while reading the WSJ, and classical music that makes you go to sleep.

That would be magic. I remember that one of our Catholic conference opponents -- Nova? Seton Hall? -- has a rather good commercial or at least they did as of last season. It really tried hard to answer the question of why someone, anyone would spend $100-120k to go to an academically marginal, no-account school. That would be my target, not trying to imitate a Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Stanford. Everyone knows why people go to those schools; tell me why a smart kid should go to Georgetown -- and why an employer should hire a Georgetown grad -- and that's what our commercials have been lacking. A world-class education in the Catholic/Jesuit tradition with an excellent basketball heritage and a diverse student body, in our nation's capital. If it hits those five points, the commercial is likely to work.

Orrrrrr....... ....you could have that and then have Bradley Cooper burst into the room with bottles of liquor and girls in bikinis. Or would that be sending the wrong message?

The Michigan and USC ones both highlight alumni. It seems the easiest way to promote your school. Considering our alumni list, I've always been a big proponent.

Hands down the greatest: Hot Hot Hot! That App State ad is probably the first one to actually persuade people to not enroll in that school.

I don't quibble with your overall point about what Georgetown should highlight in its commercial, but what makes you say that "everyone knows why people go to" Notre Dame, Michigan, USC or Stanford, but not Georgetown? According to revealed preference surveys of high school seniors, attending Georgetown is more prized than any of those schools save Stanford.
