story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=8&u=/ap/20050214/ap_on_bi_ge/verizon_mci_21Apparently, Verizon is about to acquire (or has already acquired) MCI. I can only imagine that the name of the MCI Center will have to change. We'll still be able to call it the "Phone Booth", I presume. Although, any name change probably wouldn't happen for a few years, based on the experience in Philadelphia. First Union took over Wachovia, but changed its name instead of the other way around. It was something like three or four years, if memory serves, until the banks and arenas (Philadelphia/Wilkes-Barre) changed their names.

Well, anything is better then Petco Park (the name, not the park; the park is gorgeous)

Based on discussions with several people very close to the situation, I would anticipate that the name change would be in place before Jeff Green's Junior year.

Yeah, I work for MCI and it will likely take at least a year just for shareholder and regulator approval. Maybe they could follow the lead of the LA Angels of Anaheim (dumbest name for a pro sports team)... Something like "MCI of Verizon Center"

Yeah but the LA one was to get out of a lease. At least it is still the phone booth.

I still can't believe the White Sox changed Comiskey Park to U.S. Cellular Field. It's still "Sox Park" to most of the fans, though "The Cell" isn't a bad nickname for the stadium.

hahaha, VerizonGuy just doesn't have the same ring to it. I've gotten used to MCI, at least it's nice and short. I'm not a big fan of a change to Verizon but I guess it could be a lot worse.

Now hang on, are you positively sure that they are gonna change the name? Remember that thing called the Sears Tower in Chigago?? It's not owned by Sears. It used to be, but it was bought out. Many times when a building is named, they keep the same name no matter who owns it. However, who knows? They may change the name after all...

All of this is message board fodder at this time, with no announcement yet from any of the parties involved.
Caddy, how have you been enjoying the games?

JerseyHoya, I've been LOVING the games! I must say though, that rich's voice on the radio has been the only way i've really been able to experience the hoyas.... I was, however, able to catch them on ESPN classic against SH and on ESPN plus against ND which was carried by one of our Local channels. Other than that, I'll have to wait until next year to see the hoyas in person. It has certainly been an incredible season so far and a relief for me too, because my high school basketball team is currently 0-17.
I will be visting GU next week for the open house for admitted students, but I leave the day of the villanova game. I'm so Editeded.
Loving GTown basketball, Loving the Hoyas, and loving HoyaTalk. Can't wait until next year!

I just assumed that MCI would take on the Verizon name, as it seems Verizon (with their "can you hear me now?" commercials, for instance) is more of a popular and better-known commodity these days. I don't know how things went, but I also think it's possible people associate MCI with Worldcom, and with the corporate scandals of the past few years (are they still the same company? I don't follow business news much...or at all). I remember hearing that First Union took the Wachovia name because of popular distaste with, and a sullied reputation of the First Union name. Regardless, thought I'd mention it since it was in the news.
