The men travel to Madison this weekend to compete is this meet. This will be the toughest regular season meet and probably toughest all season except for the NCAA champs in Indiana. This will be a chance for the Hoyas to compete against some very good teams. I think the Hoyas have a chance to win this. The competing teams are as follows:
Arkansas, Auburn, Brigham Young, Duke, Georgetown, Illinois, Iowa, Lamar, Marquette, Michigan, Nebraska, Syracuse, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, UW-La Crosse and unattached/open/club atheletes.
Unlike their first meet I expect the Hoyas to run their A team, plus maybe some of the unattached runners (e.g., freshmen, who are redshirting this year).

This will be a day that will go down in infamy as the Hoyas lost to the Cuse in cross country. The Hoyas did finish 2nd beating #4 in the country Wisconsin and #17 and perennial XC power Arkansas, but Syracuse ran to a low score of 41 with the Hoyas coming in 2nd with 60 pts, Wisco had 94 and Arkansas had 174. Making this a little easier to swallow was Bumbi's 1st place finish as he won the race in a time of 23:54 and redshirt freshman Mark Dennin, following up his great early season race, with a 4th place finish in 23:57. Mike Krisch was 12th in 24:14, Mike Banks 18th in 24:30, TC Lumbar 25th in 24:41, James Grimes 27th in 24:44, and Ayalew Taye in 24:55. Also running was Sandy Roberts in 45th place with 25:00.6, Alex Mason in 50th place in 25:04.9, and Levi Miller in 25:22. It is hoped that the final three of Roberts, Mason, and Miller get over what ails them and contribute during the championship meets.

It is interesting to note that none of the true freshmen ran. If the Hoyas hope for a top five performance at Nationals, Sandy Roberts and Levi Miller will have to step it up. This is their first race in a while, so they ran decently, and I hope they improve during the year. It if hope that Ayalew Taye also steps up from his 37th place finish today. I was mostly impressed by Dennin's running (his early season win was not a fluke) and TC Lumbar. I hope they can continue their fine running into the championship season. I am not sure how definite it is that all the freshmen will redshirt this year; we may need them.

Also on the schedule today was the George Mason Meet. Only two men ran there as Cabell Rosanelli finished 28th in a time of 26:16, and Brian Manning ran to a 38th place finish in 26:43.
The women competed at GMU also, and they did well, but just got nipped at UVA 30-31. This was about an eight or nine team meet, but the Hoyas and the Cavaliers made it into a dual meet as these teams had 10 or the first 13 runners.
For the Hoyas: 2. Emily Infeld 21:06 4. Emily Jones 21:20 6. Lauren Gregory 21:41 7. Natasha LaBeaud 21:42 12. Kristen Kasper 22:06 16. Rachel Schneider 22:21 23. Laura Gallo 22:54 26. Lauren Borduin 23:02 28. Amanda Walsh 23:07 32. Meaghan Gregory 23:23 42, Marcie Sobrinski 23:45 44, Sarah Lorch 24:53
Katie McCafferty did not run today. Of course, Renee Tomlin is still out with a stress fracture. UVA has picked up their running program, as they recently hired the track coach at Texas.

Hoyas win the women' s meet with McCafferty running. Team seems to be improving steadily--hopefully their ranking does not fall too much.
Mark Dennin continues to impress for the men, hopefully Levi Miller is ok. They will need another all american perf by him to go along with Bumby, Krisch, Dennin etc. Roberts and Taye hopefully were taking it easy in their first race.

I agree Nevada that this stinks to loose to Syracuse, but they seemed to run the race of their life and we ran just solid as a team. When it comes to Big East I think we will show. I was very impressed with Mark Dennin, TC Lumbar, and James Grimes though, and think our depth will carry us far. When I was on the team I remember Henner always stressing that it was depth that makes a great Cross Country team. Sandy Roberts is bound to come back strong, and Think Levi and Ayalew will bounce back as well. I am pumped because I can’t remember the last time we beat Wisconsin. Go Hoyas!

Yes, hoyatrackalum, it was great to beat Wisco, given their record in XC and distance running (with Teg, Solinsky, etc.). I think Syracuse started out hot last year in XC, but we will wait and see what they do at BE. I think we will be okay. I am counting on Sandy, Levi, and Ayalew to be ready in championship season. And Neil, when are you going to start writing for the Spike Shoe Blog? I am tired that the last thing up on the blog is my contribution about my uncle from February.

I agree Nevada, we need to do more to promote the track and field team- your post gives me some new motivation . Truth is I have not had a thought about cross country or track for a very long time.

Ah, how quickly they forget. I would like to read about your memories and stories of the track and field team.

I read that Levi Miller might have been sick at the Wisco meet.
