Czechs and Slovakia just faced off. This should be a good one. Who do I root for, David Krejci or Zdeno Chara? Edit -- Larry King style: Beautiful mid-air re-direct by Patrik Elias....you know, for his age, Jaromir Jagr doesn't look all that bad on the ice....man, I wish the NHL would embrace the larger Olympic rink (I know it'd be a logistical nightmare in existing arenas, but I can dream).

I'd like to see some variation in NHL rink sizes. Let some teams play on Olympic ice, let some play on shorter ice, and so on. Like the old days, when places like Buffalo and Boston had non-regulation ice sheets.
Back in high school we used to have a big variation. Our school's rink was a few feet shorter than normal, but the goal lines were moved away from the end boards to give extra space behind the net because our old coach loved watching Gretzky play behind the net. Our arch-rival had Olympic size ice, which gave them a big home-ice advantage. One of the schools up north played on a tiny sheet of ice in an old wooden dome, and they had a special style of play specifically adapted to their home ice. The neutral zone was so tiny that they had to make the benches a lot shorter than normal, so the 4th line and the backup goalie had to sit in the 1st row behind the bench!

HA! We had those second rows behind the first bench too. Needless to say, you didn't want to be one of the few who had to sit there.
(and sadly to say, I found myself there on more than one occasion; ahh, well, I could always dream of being a great hockey player, even if it was never meant to be).
Marian Gaborik ties it up for Slovakia!

Don't tell me. I am hereafter ignoring all updates from "The Stig."
;D ;D
With the US facing off at 3, I think it's safe to say my work day is over.
Oh, who am I kidding. My "work day" never got started. Before hockey I was watching Marco Rubio speak at CPAC and we all know it.

A shootout against Switzerland, Canada?
Hmmm, maybe the US has a shot after all.

Remember this thread?
Well trade deadline went down today. How did everyone find it? Many said it was boring. But i was only following on Twitter so to me it was like a deluge of incomplete information so that made it fun, trying to decipher it and all.
Thought the Caps made some great trades for Walker, Belanger (though i dont think he is needed), and to get Jurcina back. I say this are great because all three only cost a 7th, a 2nd, and a 6th (with juice back it means that the chimera deal is really Chris Clark and a 6th round pick for a solid power forward with grit, ill take it).
But not too high on the Corvo deal. Dont know tons about him but i do know he is not the lock down D that the Caps need. I love Pothier and wish he could have stayed and Osala is a very good prospect. Also, from the reports i have heard (police reports that is), he is a terrible person regardless of hockey skill. Do not like that. Ill wait until he plays to make a final decision, but it will be hard to root for him.
Boz, too bad about the B's not getting that top forward they need, but I think they can come together for the stretch run and get into the playoffs.
The thing i hate about the trade deadline (and any trade in season) is seeing long time Caps, who were there when the team was terrible, get dealt away. Guys like Pothier and Clark deserve to be here when the team succeeds. Oh Well, se la vie (or how ever you spell it).
Hopefully some of the guys in the Olympic thread will keep on watching and join us in this thread.

I'll have to see the new Caps play before I pass judgment. The Walker and Jurcina deals were steals for sure (although I'm not sure Boz will be too happy about Walker coming here), but I'm not so sure about Belanger and Corvo. They're the best pickups, but a 2nd round pick isn't small stuff in the NHL, and I'd expect more than Corvo for what we gave up.

I saw that live as well. Large fine and lengthy suspension forthcoming, I would imagine.

I just found out. That is insane. I mean, yeah NHL, plus 1 for addressing this now and trying to make rule changes. But minus 1,000,000 for completely failing on this incident specifically. Particularly Editeded off at Colin Campbell for basically acknowledging that Cooke is a dirty player, but still refusing to do anything about it. I strongly suggest Sid The Kid watch his freakin' back on March 18. Can we bring back Marty McSorley for one game??

Hooray for consistency! He didn't suspend Mike Richards for a similar hit earlier in the year so he thought he should make the same wrong decision here. And the NHL wonders why they can't hold an audience? With rocket scientists like this running the league...
Keep your eyes on which players the Bruins activate from the minors on March 17.

Its almost like a player needs to be severely injured for these a**hats to wake up and figure it out.
Its insane that players get suspended for accidental knee on knees, but events that could kill someone are just ignored.
And of course Chris Pronger comes out saying how they shouldnt take these hits out of the game because it would reward guys for putting their heads down. That is just retarded. If he has his head down dont hit his head chris! Hit his body! its alot bigger and easier to hit than his head!

Also, on a lighter note, Sid the Kid's equipment has been FOUND! Boz you can finally come off the ledge, because i know you care so much about him Im glad it took them two weeks to determine that "the stick that scored the golden goal" was headed to the IIHF Hall of Fame. Shocking i know. And that the glove was in a teammates equipment bag (hockey gear, in an equipment bag? No!).

This isn't NHL, but still pretty epic: sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4991859Quinnipiac beats Union 3-2 in 5OT early this morning. College hockey plays full 20 minute overtimes. And here's the kicker: Game 2 of the series starts tonight, and if Union wins they play again on Sunday.

Yeah, yeah, YEAH!!!! What a win by the Caps over the Hawks!
The Ovie ejection was total BS. That's a 2 minute penalty (if anything) if Campbell doesn't get hurt, and Campbell only got hurt because he caught an edge on the way to the boards. With Campbell getting hurt it's 4 minutes at most. 5 + game is completely absurd.
After that it was 2 of the worst periods I've seen the Caps play this period, but they really gritted it out at the end. Nothing pretty at all, but their sheer hard work paid off. Backstrom wins it in the end with a great play that started with his own backcheck and finished with him getting cleaned out by the Hawks defender, but only after he'd gotten the game winning shot off!

Stig, there is nothing i can add to that. It was at once a terrible game and an awesome game. Shocked that for once i agreed with Milbury. I think the problem is that rule requires a five minute boarding to be accompanied with a gamer and that is just stupid. I could have lived with a major, but isnt a gamer used in order to get someone out of a game who may do something dangerous again? I dont think ovie was go running around boarding other guys.

No opinion re the Campbell penalty, but that third period was a good example of why I've thought since the Detroit series last year of why, attractive as the Hawks may seem, they're first round upset fodder.

You guys have to be kidding. Pushing a guy in the back at top speed five feet from the boards is about as dirty a hockey play as you can make (if you're not named Matt Cooke or Mike Richards). It's definitely a major and a game (no such thing as a double minor for boarding, learn the rules). Just another dirty play to add to his "highlight" reel. And the fact you agree with Millbury ruins your credibility on the topic.
