Thanks, Stig. I used to be a diehard fan but have trailed off a bit the last 2-3 years (my daughter happens to be almost 3...I think its more than a coincidence). Regardless, I always tune in for as much of the playoffs as possible, even with my Rangers not in it and my wife's team (she is still a diehard) shown the door by the Bruins.

Yeah i cant remember ever seeing a diving penalty called in isolation, or at least cant remember seeing it. They are not unusual but three in one game on one team is rare and says a lot about that team (both that they are a bunch of divers but also that they really wanted to win and were willing to do anything)

Apparently, Alexei Kovalev was not the only whiny little baby in Montreal all those years.

Refs called a dive in the Detroit-Phoenix game last night, too. What a well-played series that was (with the exception of a lopsided Game 7) by both teams. Yotes really missed Shane Doan in the end.

Yeah. Game 7 wasn't actually that lopsided until the last few seconds of the second period. When Phoenix had that 5 on 3 with about 3 minutes left in the second and the score at 3-1, it looked like it might turn into a great game. But Detroit's PK snuffed out any Phoenix momentum, and Stuart's goal completely crushed them.

That was a great defensive stand (though Phoenix did help Detroit out by settling for slapshots from distance throughout the entire thing). The breakaway goal to make it 4-1 was just the capper. I turned it off at that point to watch Jeff Gree.......and then that lasted for about 5 minutes, so I turned on Adult Swim. ;D

This is why I wanted us to close on the road, we were much better on the road than at home this series. I knew we had no chance if it went to game 7. Ugh. For the record I think the puck was in before the goalie was interfered with and it should've been 1-1 at that point. W/e the way the caps played tonight they didn't deserve to win this series.

Gill (who admittedly was brilliant this series) also bumped Knuble into Halak.
Bah. I don't even want to talk about it. I don't even have any other teams to cheer for. San Jose are just chokers. Chicago were a bunch of little b*tches over the Ovechkin thing (Ban Ovechkin! Let Hossa win the series for us!), and being a Cheesehead I can't cheer for then anyways. Cheering for Detroit is like cheering for Duke, and being a Calgary fan there's no way I can cheer for Vancouver.
Things aren't any better out West. The Flyers and Pens are just plain evil. There's no way I'll ever cheer for the Habs after this past week, and the Bruins come from a city that is almost as insufferable as New York when it comes to sports. Ugh. It's like every series is a meteor series.

Hard to believe this is the first time Bruins and Flyers have met in the playoffs since 1978! That's a lot of early exits for both teams in that time period, I guess. Oh well, it will be good to remind Philly of their place in the sporting world - they have gotten a bit big for their britches recently with the Phillies.

In truth, I feel a bit bad for Bruins diehards (and I am certainly not one of them - I don't watch hockey until Patriot's Day) in all of this. For the small minority of sports fans who care about hockey above all else, the past decade has been bittersweet at best - every other pro team in town has won at least one title, the national media has been all over the stories, the national perception has turned against Boston, going from being scrappy underdogs to being loud-mouthed bullies, and yet the B's have not made it past the second round since 1992. If they somehow get even as far as the conference finals they will have to face their one of their two greatest nemeses and will undoubtedly have most neutrals rooting against them (with the possible exception of Caps fans).

I don't follow hockey much, but I was curious as to the response by Cap fans to the latest debacle, and it seems to be fairly mild. Is everyone just accustomed to this type of collapse? I'm wondering, has there ever been one worse than this? Has any 1 seed ever lost to an 8 after leading 3-1? I think HSB mentioned above that the Caps are better on the road, but I heard someone on the radio this morning say that the Caps had the best home record in the league this year. How the heck did this happen?

I'm kind of glad that we don't get versus at the lake. I would have been rather irritated watching the Caps lose after having a 3-1 lead in the series. Dammit, yet another team I don't like advanced in the playoffs (Red Wings) in addition to the Habs. It wasn't enough that my favorite team (Devils) got knocked out in the first round ... no, every single serires has to go the way I don't want it too. It's a good thing Gator baseball is having a good season. Otherwise, I would be very bored right now.

How the heck did this happen? I disagree with HSB that the Caps are better on the road. The team plays great at home. Before this series they'd scored at least 2 goals in every home game this year, then they get held to 1 goal in the last 2 home games of the series. I think most Caps fans are just sort of dazed right now. They don't really know what hit them. It's not like the Caps chocked, they just ran into a hot goalie. That's enough to doom any team. DC sports fans also have very low expectations. We don't know what it's like to have the best team in a sport, and any Caps fan who remembers the black jersey era can remember rejoicing at any non-last place finish. New York or Boston this is not.

I think HSB said the Caps were better on the road in this series, as opposed to all season. I believe the Caps had the best home record during the regular season.
Jack, I expect you'll see plenty of blood spilled in the Philly-Boston series, no matter who wins. I hope some of it is Carcillo's.

Yeah Not on the year, but in this series we sure looked better in games 3,4, and 6 even though we didn't win game 6 than we did in 1,5 and 7. I missed game 2 so I can't speak to that. I feel like in this series we played better in the away games than the home games.
as to rooter's question, no no 1 seed has ever lost to a 8 seed after leading 3-1.

The Wiz and "Skins have never been good enough in recent memory to be in a position to truly collapse as the Caps have. All four of Washington's playoff series over the past three seasons have gone to a Game 7, and the club is 1-3 in those contests, only once reaching the second round.
