www.bbstate.com/info/schools-hoopsbdgetuSomeone just sent me a link ranking Division I Basketball program expenses. Unsurprisingly, Duke is #1, but I was surprised to see that our own program ranked in the top 5. I understand that both JT Jr. and JTIII make a lot of salary, but it's still surprising.

Probably due to rent.

This was brought up on the other board.
My guess is that because we are one of the few programs with a full year of rent payments instead of just a few games.
We have full expenses related to that.
Other programs have depreciation on their on campus gyms if they are built recently. But they probably don't allocate it at all to basketball or at most partially, spreading out the expenses over all the possible uses and over 30 years or so.

Can't seem to get the stats (seems to be a membership site), but I have to imagine rent is a big factor.

Yes, you have to go to individual schools.

That seems like that's a lot of revenue. In fact, if I counted correctly, we're the #10 ranked school that doesn't have a BCS conference (and ND) football team. And a couple of those schools are in the Mountain West, which is close.

Not only do we have to rent for every game, we also get screwed by the place we're renting from. The Verizon Center is the only arena in town that can accommodate GU basketball. We need them more than they need us, so we basically have to accept whatever terms they dictate to us. Most other schools that that rent out bigger arenas for games have other options, so they can negotiate better deals. Seton Hall is a prime example.

Florida was 7th in basketball expenditures but 334th in expense/win. That seems a bit surprising. I know we didn't have a good season certainly, as we were in that NIT thing, but still, we had 25 wins. I wouldn't think that would put us that far down the list.

Although I'm not privy to the details, I'm willing to bet that the terms of our deal with the Verizon Center are nowhere near as bad as they could be, given that Ted Leonsis owns a large part of Washington Sports and Entertainment, which runs Verizon.

Ah, I wasn't aware that Ted owned a chunk of the VC now. I remember that when Seton Hall signed their deal with the Prudential Center, some people here familiar with our deal said that Seton Hall got a much better deal than we did.

Mhmmm And one would imagine that once Abe Polin can no longer own the rest, Ted will likely buy enough to have a majority share (he has expressed interest in this already so that the Caps can be the number one tenant and not the Wiz). Once he is in control the rent may decrease or stay the same (i.e. resist normal increases due to inflation etc.)
