OK, there is a 15 minute segment on how great Reddick is, and how unfortunate it is that he has to listen to insults from opposing fans.
Granted some of the stuff people say is over the line, but they make it seem like poor JJ is the first college player to ever be taunted.
Sniff. I'm reaching for a tissue right now. (though for a different reason than the ESPN announcers are as they talk about Duke)

While I hear you in theory. I thought the piece was well done. That kid takes massive amounts of abuse anywhere he goes - not unlike G-Mac. Nevertheless, I think JJ's insults are tougher. Seems to me that he is a good kid overall. I think the piece showed this well and that was the point.

1) Of course you think he's a good kid, that was the point of the piece. For all we know he's the world's biggest jerk, but all ESPN is going to do is tell us how great he is.
2) Would anyone but a Duke player get a segment that long on how tough it is to hear insults? G-mac gets insults, and maybe ESPN mentioned it during the 'Cuse gameday. At the Maryland gameday, a Duke player gets the largest segment of the program, it went on FOREVER
3) He would get half as much crap if ESPN didn't do segment's like this.

At the Maryland gameday, a Duke player gets the largest segment of the program, it went on FOREVER Have you ever paid attention to ESPN Gameday reports before (specifically college football) or reports during the morning broadcast of weekend Sports Center during the school year? They are ALWAYS doing segments in which players have to overcome some obstacle. Its not just limited to Duke basketball players no matter how much peolple believe that to be the case. And nothing ESPN has done justifies what fans say to Reddick during games. I don't drink out of the JJ Kool-ade like Vitale does but I would never get on a college or pro player in that fashion. Its uncalled for. Besides fans have been getting on JJ from day one...long before he ever got an "special treatment" from ESPN.

Cry me a (EDITED) river. Redick gets insults, but even his coach says that it was no worse than what Laettner and Hurley got. I would never say some of the stuff that people say to him, but this isn't unique to Redick. Part of playing for a high profile team is getting taunted. If you think that I feel bad for that kid for even a brief milisecond, than you are sorely mistaken.

Yes ESPN always does segments where someone overcomes obstacles, but normally its is something like an ill mother, massive surgery, an injury thought to end season, a coach/parent/friend dying, coming from the inner-city.
A few profanities, while wrong, doesn't even come close. Its not even comparable.

I hate Duke as much as the next guy, but give the guy a break. Sure ESPN give Duke way too much coverage, but I thought it was a decent segment. Reddick is attacked, like many other players, and I think they were just showing the negative side of fans. ESPN was making Maryland fans look bad after all... so its not all bad.
Anyways, good win Hoyas! 8-3 Big East, just unbeleivable.
Go Hoyas!

There was a piece about that in the Washington Post today. Look, i don't care much for Duke or Coach K or Reddick, but seriously, no one else in college basketball gets treated as badly as he does. But you know what it said in the Post? What Reddick said in the Post? That he doesn't care--that its gets him going harder. he says that silence would probably disturb him more. So maybe we'll see the Terapin fans pull some silence on him tonight (well, probably not.)

It bothers me that ESPN is trying so hard to force this guy down our throats and trying to make this guy a victim and a hero...
Who do you think endured more, Pat and the boys in the early 80s? The first Black players to travel and play basketball in the SEC? or JJ Redick?
I really don't feel sorry for him at all...
I think JJ Redick is a good shooter...but is he the best No. 2 to ever play? NO!!!
Is he the best No. 2 to ever play in the ACC? NO!!!
Is he the best No. 2 to ever play in the state of North Carolina? NO!!!
Is he the best No. 2 to ever play in RTP? NO!!!
Is he the best No. 2 to ever play in Durham? NO!!!
Is he the best No. 2 to ever play at Duke? maybe...but I can easily argue Trajan Langdan as a better shooter and better off the dribble...
He's a good shooter and a solid player...if we were playing pick-up ball, I would definitely pick him on my squad...but I would in no way annoint him as this super-hero that Vitale, Packer and others have dubbed him...

I completely agree that he gets way too much attention and is overrated. However, I feel this piece was focusing more on the brutality of many fans and hardships of many players (not just JJ). I think it would be hard to be hated and yelled at by complete strangers.
So while agree with your statements, I think you misinterpreted the intentions of the piece.
Just my opinion Go Hoyas!

Poor JJ, how does he find the strength to play?? I guess ESPN doesn't remember Patrick Ewing getting called an APE and the Hoyas getting called more racial slurs than you'd hear at a KKK rally. All I know is that GU was associated with being "thugs" before it came in vogue to use the term as code word for "too black" or PC term for you know what. Being aggressive and physical is a staple of today's players and to me Georgetown Basketball shaped a lot of how teams play defensively. The fact John Thompson didn't apologize for his team's "rough" play and cater to the media was all the ammo that some scared whites needed to fire their ammo at "how THOSE people" do things. All I can say is anything JJ Redick endures will NEVER come close to the mistreatment of Patrick Ewing and his teammates and later on Allen Iverson at GU. I admit Patrick has a spot in my heart as my favorite Hoya and player, but I also grew up watching GU with him and witnessed the chants, slurs, ape signs, bananas held up, and NOTHING was said by anyone other than Len Berman and Bill Raferty who said it was DISGUSTING AND ATROCIOUS behavior by the fans and why I miss those guys calling the games. So JJ, tough it out, I don't think you have it too rough. Afterall he plays for Duke and they get the calls and benefit of the doubt. Georgetown NEVER has been a favorite of the officials and often had to overcome them on their path to a win.

Very good post RDF. I agree completely. I'd add that ESPN (and Duke's SID, who I presume was somewhat involved) didn't do Reddick any favors making the piece about the horrors of being heckled by drunken idiots. I don't condone the sort of thinking that says "I paid my $30, so I can scream whatever I want at a bunch of 20 year olds." But, at the same time, successful athletes simply tune out that crap.
I couldn't agree more with what you wrote about Pat.

I've now seen the piece, and while I feel bad for JJ, I really have to wonder if the guy is just too cocky.
But not about basketball. You've got to be waaay overconfident to read your own poetry on national television. Stick to basketball, JJ.
