LinkWe need to ramp up our production of Holocaust movies and musician biopics, stat! I really wish they would have gone the Golden Globe model (5 noms for Best Drama, 5 for Best Comedy) rather than this, which is just going to result in a lot more "very serious" pieces of crap (*cough* Crash *cough*).

Like the New York Times going from 2 bestseller lists to 8 because of the Harry Potter books, this is a move that smacks of desperation in the face of increasing irrelevance. Empirically, it'll be interesting to see if the magnitude of the "Oscar bounce" changes at all.

Desperation in the face of irrelevance? Or just the industry realizing that now ten movies can advertise that they are Best Picture nominees? Choice B has my vote.

Are there even ten GOOD movies every year, let alone great?

This is comparable to expanding the NCAA basketball tournament to 264 teams. With 10 movies nominated, some real dogs are going to able to put "Nominated for an Oscar for Best picture" in their advertisements. Who was responsible for this?

Are there even ten GOOD movies every year, let alone great? They also get points for doing this the year following the weakest crop of five in recent memory. You could go full tard and get a nod now.

Who was responsible for this? Probably people that wanted their films to have the Oscar nominee tagline. At least the NY Times list is segregated by category nicely - this is gonna be 2 Nazi biopics, 3 Hallmark Hall of Fame Movies, 3 movies involving rape or disability, and 2 movies people have heard of.

And, from what I've heard, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen STILL isn't going to get a nomination.
