holy poop! It was sheer arrogance on Spain/Ramos part to not clear a ball that was on the line (referring to USA's second goal).

Wow.
Go Team Schizophrenia!!
;D
Definitely looking forward to watching this tonight.
(Of course, we have to end the game with a red card though. Sheesh.)

I'd like to see another replay, the one I saw made it look like a horrible call. I didn't see a foul whatsoever, although I'm admittedly a homer.

WHAT A GAME!! Miraculous, for pure underdog status probably on par with beating Portugal in 2002.
I don't care if we don't do patronages in this country, from now on he's Sir Tim Howard to me.

WOW great win for the US program! Great job from our back line, they really held to pressure and closed on all thru balls. Great game for Donovan too, he was truly everywhere we needed him to be.

What the heck did the US team have for breakfast before the Egypt game?
That Spanish attack for about the first 15-20 minutes of the second half was unbelievably intense. Some superb desperation defense by the US with the blocked shots, and Howard was superb when it got through the defense. And Dempesy's goal was great opportunism - I thought that Donovan had blown it with the cross, but somehow Clint got back and managed to punch it in.
Huge win, and a very nice way to thank Brazil for getting us into the semis!

Talk about bringing your A-GAME! Intense. Best win ever for the US I'd say. Portugal being the only real contender. But Portugal wasn't the undisputed best team in the world and on a 35 game winning streak...

Great win start to finish. I don't follow the ins and outs and side dramas of the team, but I think this event will clear many things up. For World Cup 2010, you make Altidore and Donovan the "franchise players" and build around it.
As for Spain, I found their attack too dainty. Too many extra passes and attempts at precision play for my liking.

But Portugal wasn't the undisputed best team in the world and on a 35 game winning streak... Not sure I'd go that far. US made the semis of the first World Cup with two 3-0 wins, beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup, and beat Colombia 2-1 in 1994. In 2002, the win over Mexico got the US into the quarters (I was at Summers during the Portugal game and screamed like a loon, but Portugal didn't even get out of its bracket). And the Confederations Cup still isn't that prestigious. Before Brazil beat Argentina last time, the previous losers were Australia, Brazil, Japan, and Cameroon. It's a cool tournament, but it's not the World Cup.

Howard had a good game, but for the first time in forever a heroic stand was more to do with our backline- which all of the sudden is our strength. Jay DeMerrit- that starting spot now belongs to you. Ditto Gooch. Everyone else will have to fight for the other two, probably Spector and Boca. Would love to have Dolo and Hey Dude as two back ups.

Did Spain play their A team? I can't provide a bedrock answer, but they certainly did not play a B team. They appeared to have accomplished strikers and middies. Perhaps there was a player here or there, but that would be the exception.

Did Spain play their A team? YES. WITHOUT A DOUBT, this was a first rate Spanish team. This is not a crap tournament. Everyone, Italy, Spain and Brazil brought full blown A teams and wanted to win this. This isn't a glorified friendly. Spain were missing Iniesta but he is injured and of course someone is always injured, even in WC games.

I caught the first 20 and the last 20 (stupid co-workers, expecting me to work), and will catch up with the rest on the DVR. Haven't seen Jozy's goal yet, but looking forward to it. Glad to see my 2-nil prediction come true, though I was a little off team-wise. Really impressive performance from what I saw-the attack was intense in stretches. Tough not to jump up and down and scream after the 2nd goal or when the game ended.
Query: how would you describe this upset for a sports but non-soccer fan? I went with a basketball parallel, somewhere between a 15 seed beating a 2 and a 16 beating a 1, just in terms of frequency and comparative player quality.

This isn't a glorified friendly. Spain were missing Iniesta but he is injured and of course someone is always injured, even in WC games. Yes and no. Spain definitely played the best team they had today, but they are missing 2 of their 3 best mids at this tourney in Iniesta and Marcos Senna. But still, that doesn't take a lick away from what we did today. This team still infuriates me because we play to our competition so much. A month ago, this team got rocked in Costa Rica (yeah I know it's a tough place to play, but still), and now we beat the best team in the world. If we bring this game more frequently, we'd be a much more dangerous team. We'll see what happens Sunday. I think that this team is way more confident than we last time against Brazil, and hopefully we don't give up anything early. Those things seem to shake us and lead us into sloppy matches. The recent matches where we haven't given up an early goal (Italy, Egypt, Spain), we've played pretty solidly.
