The GOP seized control of the New York State Senate today, getting two NYC Democrats to switch caucuses (it's not clear that they've changed parties). There some debate as to whether this was even legal, and apparently the two switching Senators are both under criminal investigation. Albany is a weird place. Update: Apparently the new crew just passed a bunch of rules changes. If anyone has any knowledge of NYS politics, your insight is appreciated.

And Arlen Specter switched parties also. Makes a difference, doesn't it?

And Arlen Specter switched parties also. Makes a difference, doesn't it? What does this even mean? He seems to be implying that some time in the past, you have denied either (1) that Arlen Specter switched parties, or (2) that it "makes a difference" that sometimes people switch parties. I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm going to bet that no one has ever questioned either part of this needlessly "told ya so"-style statement.

Link? I'm looking for stuff on CNN.com, and I don't see anything. You'd expect this to be big news, since half our country seems to think that New York is the center of the world.

I count two "laugh out loud's" on here: The governor also said “I will not allow this,” but then conceded that there was nothing he could do to stop it. Democrats tried to stall the move, storming from the chamber and turning out the lights, but the Republicans continued the session, as the two Democrats joined with them to elect new leaders.

And Arlen Specter switched parties also. Makes a difference, doesn't it? What does this even mean? Some people have trouble connecting the dots. It means that sometimes Democrats cheer when someone switches from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party and sometimes Republicans cheer when some Democrats align themselves with the Republican Party. In both cases, there are consequences to the actions and whether one cheers or not depends on what party it is that switches.

A fourth: The new "coalition" neglected to remove the Secretary of the Senate, who is also the ousted Majority Leader's chief of staff, after they "took over." So now the Secretary, who oversees the Sergeant-at-Arms, has locked everyone out of the Senate chamber until things are "resolved." www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2009/06/the-aponte-question.htmlblogs.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/15265/senate-chamber-locked-wont-reopen-until-aponte-saysAnd a fifth: Apparently one of the triggers of the whole thing was the ousted Majority Leader ticking off big-wig Tom Golisano by fiddling with his Blackberry during a meeting with him. www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2009/06/smith-a-victim-of-bad-blackber.htmlOnly in Albany.

As far as I can tell, it is now also unclear who is next in line to the governorship. As I understand it, when there is no Lieutenant Governor, the person who held the title "Senate President pro tempore & Majority Leader" was next, but now that position has been split into two separate offices as part of the "coalition" deal.

I didn't mean to imply that the Dems are innocent in this, I was just adding to KGHoya's examples of terrific unintentional comedy. Let's not let our partisan leanings prevent us from enjoying some high quality comic stupidity. Right now the parties seem to be having a heated competition to see who can look stupider. Good stuff, unless you happen to live in New York!

One of the flippers has now flipped back, leaving the Senate in a 31-31 tie.

Apparently a gay Democratic Manhattan state senator was working a deal with the Republicans to switch parties if they sponsored gay marriage legislation, but that fell through at some point.
New York State politics are weird.
