Everyone's favorite yellow journalist, Pete Thamel, got an interesting quote from Fran Fraschilla about Jeremy Tyler skipping his senior year of high school to play in Europe: Fran Fraschilla, an ESPN analyst who covers college games and analyzes foreign players in the N.B.A. draft, noted that if Tyler played in the second division in Spain, his competition would be former college stars like Wayne Simien (Kansas), Taylor Coppenrath (Vermont) and Danya Abrams (Boston College).
“He’s going to have to be mentally and physically tough,” Fraschilla said.
But Fraschilla added that he was certain Tyler was not going to Europe for the money. He said he could easily earn $200,000 in the United States.
“He could pretty much get that money illegally, either via a college or an agent, willing to funnel his family the money,” Fraschilla said. “I’m hoping this is a savvy move to really improve his game.” While what he says isn't very shocking, does anyone recall such a prominent person (in this case a former coach and current TV analyst) stating a fact that the NCAA is trying its best to hide?

Wow, I am a little shocked Fraschilla would go on the record with a quote like that. We all know the agent game, but to say a college would help pay a player off is a little strong, and probably not even necessary given the agent's role in the typical arrangement.
Anyway, that Tyler kid is going to get eaten alive by players of the caliber mentioned. It does support the side that says sitting on a bench for two years in Europe is not exactly great for development, or more importantly, confidence. Tyler could be making a mistake. As a big, this may not be such a smart way to go, those guys are men, period. Guards jumping to europe like Jennings probably make more sense.

Yes, I am shocked that Fran would come out and say it as clearly and cleanly as that. I don't think we have heard the last of that comment.
If Thamel wrote that, it will be very interesting to see how Fran backpedals from this one. Not because it isn't true - but because it isn't the kind of thing ESPN would want any of their folks talking about.
I can't say I know any of the pay issues are true by personal knowledge, just that it sounds very likely. $200K sounds like a pretty big number. But hey, maybe that's where the market is these days.
And yet some schools just don't play that game. Amazing how they can still compete -- like GU.

Looks like Fraschilla has given up on his coaching career.

Misquoted, misquoted!
Congrats to Fran for having the gumption to lay that out.
As for USC, I saw the story this morning about Sidney visiting Mississippi State, so I'm also wondering what's up. Hopefully not USC. ;D

For those of you with the knowledge, since we're talking real numbers and I didn't think such precise figures were available, is that $200K for 1-2 years at a college program before going pro? $200K/year (seems absurdly high)?
And if $200K is about right for Tyler, what did Tyreke pull down? Mayo? Same neighborhood?
This is pretty depressing, like it always is when the board goes to the underbelly of the AAU discussion.

Also, I wonder if this $200K is a real money figure, or if it incorporates the extra $$ gained from shoe contracts, hiring fathers as assistant coaches (see: John Calipari and Dajuan Wagner's father, for instance), premium housing, etc etc etc. If it doesn't incorporate all these, and that's just a straight cash $$ amount, god I can't even fathom how much guys must make at places like Memphis and Louisville.
