This is one of the greater titles for a thread, ever.
I will say that Will is having a boatload of fun with this column (if you get a chance, read the comments!).
I will also say he's right. Cambridge is dead on - you look better when you're well-dressed. You look like you care more. I work better when I'm in a suit. Groomsmen do well at weddings at least partially because they're in a tux. Fewer people respect Oregon, whose football uniforms must have been made by blind workers in a dark factory at night, because their colors are so ostenatious.
The YouTube video from Britain's Got Talent that's got everybody crying has a nasty point - appearances matter and always have. Will's having some fun while making that point (and getting everybody to talk about it).

This is one of the greater titles for a thread, ever. My inspiration was, of course, The Simpsons.

Now take off those sneakers, remove your baseball hats, untuck that corporate golf shirt you tucked into those semi-formal jeans, toss the braided belt in the garbage, and get back to work. So very mid-90's, 'bin. Been watching too many Seinfeld re-runs? Appropriate attire is so very different depending on location, purpose, and audience. I agree that it's about knowing how to dress for where you are, who you're with, and what you're doing. The problem I have is trying to force that sense of propriety into an anachronistic lens---times change, and THANK GOD! Who wants to be wearing Louis XIV-era tights, cloak, and wig, or Shakespeare-era frilly collar things? No thanks. Togas, on the other hand.... ;D ;D ;D. It's also about geography. "Proper" dress in Southern Cal means something very different than New England, as weather, culture, and activity have made I think the most cogent point you make is about work; i.e., dress to get the most done / be the most productive. That means something different in rural Montana than it does on Wall Street, as it should. The best advice I've ever gotten about how to dress was from my mom: (1) dressing well never goes out of style, and (2) it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

All I know is that I can't wait to wear my jeans on casual Friday tomorrow.

I personally think jeans are too dressy. Sweatpants and basketball shorts year round FTW.

The irony is that sometime in the near future his articles are going to be edited by a guy in his underwear at his home computer.
I did however like interning at a place where jeans were required, made laundry very easy.

I wore jeans to work today. Why the hell not?
I relate no level of productivity to style of clothing (OK, maybe when I'm "working from home" in a t-shirt and gym shorts, I'm a little inclined to napping; I grant you that). I do relate productivity to comfort though, and jeans are very comfortable.
Of course, here I am on Hoyatalk, explicitly NOT working. Then again, I do that when I'm wearing my regular work clothes too. So there.
(actually, I had a very productive morning, but I'm bored now and really just wanting the weekend to get started already)

The "Comments" section in that column now numbers over 900.
More interesting than his argument is the post-script: he has worn jeans just once in his life for a matter of a few hours and under duress; which means that since 1941 this man has never held a job outside a staid office, or worse, never went outside into a back yard, a field, a farm, or even a root cellar that required it.

Also re: the postscript: "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother" is a Ray Wylie Hubbard song (which, FWIW, Mr. Hubbard has grown to loathe). Of course, one cannot count on George F. Will to get his red-dirt music references correct. Semi-related anecdote: When I received an invitation for a Georgetown classmate's wedding in California, it indicated the dress code was 'evening formal.' Some seemed shocked when I wore a tuxedo. Apparently, in the Golden State, 'evening formal' simply means 'not board shorts.'

And remember, this is the man who called Obama an elitist. One does not negate the other. Besides, no matter what Will says, blue jeans have not been marketed for "farm & outdoor work" for how long now? Like, pretty much my whole life, I think? I'd wager the majority of people who do that type of work for a living don't wear what most of us would consider "blue jeans" anymore & haven't for a long time. They wear work pants from Carhartt or another company like that. Sure some of them might made from denim and maybe they even come in blue. But they're really not the same thing.

Wow, my posts in this thread are making me sound like a complete rube, but... My office is in a small town where agriculture is the dominant sector of the economy. I can assure you most farmers (at least cotton farmers) still wear jeans.

I can assure you most farmers (at least cotton farmers) still wear jeans. Why a rube? I based my opinion on the ridiculous amount of success my brother-in-law, who is a manager for Carhartt, has had in marketing such work wear to industrial, agricultural and other sectors who we would traditionally associate with hard labor and/or being "outdoorsy." So, I admit it's anecdotal. But not anecdotal based on nothing.

I'm also fairly sure he wears suits to baseball games. I fail to understand why that is necessary. George was probably way colder than I was at Cubs opening day on Monday.
