I guess we have to go if we get a bid(which i have to think we will), we look like prima donnas if we don't, and the tradition of the NIT requires it. But is there anyone who really believes that it will do us any good? This team has regressed horribly over the last 2 monthes, to the point where we are arguably the 15th or 16th best team in the Big East right now. They have not improved appreciably in any aspect of the game over the last 8 weeks, and it seems you can just see in their body language, and in their play, that they are discouraged, and just want this season to be over. Another week or two of practice ain't gonna help. III might think about just giving these guys a week off to focus on schoolwork and their outside lives, then come back for a couple of hard practices before an NIT game.

I'd assume that III could emphasize new approaches/plays. The pressure of making the NCAAs is also now gone, so that could remove some of the pressure.
And this team is still really young. An extra game or few would give everyone more experience playing with each other.
Finally, dealing with fatigue and defeatism is valuable. Being able to make a redemptive run - or having the stink of a first-round loss - provides valuable lessons.

If this seemed like a squad that battled back from adversity, I might agree with you - but for the most part they have simply sunk deeper into the abyss, and another devestating blow to their psyche, like a first-round loss to a mid-major runner-up, would do more harm than good.

There is a tradition of us hanging the NIT banner over urinals... and also rejecting bids...
Maybe we should start with the urinal trick - see what happens. It did afterall spark a Sweet 16 bid...

There is no value to playing in the NIT for this team. They are finished mentally and really would just be better off getting away from the game and being regular students again. However, there is too much downside to the perception of the program if we do not play, so for Georgetown's rep these guys will have to get on one more bus and represent the university. I will watch of course, and be hoping for a win to see them play again (8 months off is far too long). It is a selfish motivation on my part and the truly best thing for these guys is to relax and recover from a trying season.
That said, I am hoping III just lets them get some downtime and gathers them for maybe a meeting and one practice prior to the NIT game. Refreshing their mentality right now is more helpful than any tactical crap he can coach at this point.

This season has not lived up to expectations. Why not double-down and get one last chance for a nice run? And if you lose to Mason, it's valuable during practice next season for III to mention that a team that beat Memphis ended its season with a loss to GMU. If they do lose, the season's over.

Isn't losing to St. John's twice in one week enough? I don't see any chance for a "run" in the NIT - just another disjointed, uninspired loss.

The NIT game (should we assume it's more than one?) will give JTIII a chance to play Henry more and make him feel better about staying a Hoya for next year.

I'm not focusing this on the various comments about Henry - but this concept that teams should play freshmen just so they don't want to leave bothers me. If a freshman isn't playing as much as he would like, his mindset should be to work as hard as he can to EARN time, and to force the coach to play him. That is the type of guy we (and every other team) needs - and hopefully exactly the type Henry is. He showed some flashes this year, and played pretty well yesterday; he should certainly see that with this bunch, he has a great opportunity to earn big time next season.

Now that the NIT is run by the NCAA, I don't think we have the option of rejecting the invite.

Now that the NIT is run by the NCAA, I don't think we have the option of rejecting the invite. I would not suggest we reject a bid even if we could - would look bad - but I would really hope that III gives the guys a few days off. The NIT won't do us any good, so we might as well get a chance to start putting this mess behind us mentally.

NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY...as i said in another post, if these kids cant get up to play St. Johns to keep their NCAA hopes alive, how can we expect they will get up for mid majors in the NIT? They are disappointed and playing with no enthusiasm. IT is blatantly clear. Shelf this season and lets get to work on the next. Playing like we played yesterday would definitely result in an early exit from an inferior tourney. Why subject them to that?!

We get invited to the NIT, we play in the NIT.
GU-UMCP or GU-Davidson or GU-Mason are each attractive.

I continue to have no idea why people bash the NIT with such regularity. If we get an invite we should gladly accept it and use it as an opportunity to try and improve as a team. This team is young and they can use as many in game situations as possible to try and learn and develop as players and teammates.
I have no idea where people come up with all these psychological analyses of how the team is feeling based on their body language and saying things regarding us fans like "we might as well get a chance to start putting this mess behind us mentally".
How can you tell that the team wants the season to be over? Because they look upset on the floor and don't appear to be having any fun? They are losing, thats why they look like that! This doesnt mean they want the season to be over.
When I was in high school my team was good for a couple years and also crappy for a couple years. However, during those bad seasons when nothing was going right I kept wanting another chance for us to improve and correct the mistakes we'd been making. I wanted another game just to get out there and play the game I love. I have no doubt that most of the team feels this way, and that is what this is really about. Let the team play and try to improve.
If they can figure some things out and win some games it can do much more for them than just ending the season and trying to "put this behind us". These guys are still going to be playing basketball every day, so they might as well play some organized games together and improve as a team. If you can't stand this as a fan then don't watch, but this isn't about you, it's about the team.
I welcome the opportunity to watch us play in the NIT and if we are fortunate enough to do so I will be watching the team as long as they keep playing.

Now that the NIT is run by the NCAA, I don't think we have the option of rejecting the invite. Thanks for pointing this out, I wasn't aware of it. My thought was that if III really didn't want to play he might work behind the scenes to convince the NIT people that everyone would be better off if they simply didn't extend GU a bid. Kentucky might do the same thing. But the NCAA has already taken enough heat for catering to the larger schools (and not just in basketball) -- I doubt they would be inclined to do GU any favors here. Although I'd be interested in hearing how the NCAA reconciles the whole "student-athlete" thing with forcing the players into what amounts to a post-season exhibition tournament after they've already devoted nearly all of the school year to the preseason, their conference schedule and their conference tournament (about 30 games give or take a little).
