We've all been listening to Rich for a long time now. I'm wondering what everyone's opinion of him are.
I think he's a good play by play man, but doesn't do much analysis, nor do his broadcasts include much homerism.
I currently live in Manhattan Kansas, home of the KSU Wildcats. Gameday is much different here. Multiple broadcasters, always ingame analysis, and ingame cheering. They also do much more interviews with the players. Much of this has to do with being in Kansas with sports playing a much larger role in just about everything.
I always love, "Hoyas win!, Hoyas win!" I think the radio broadcasts of Hoyas games could be even better though.

Rich is an institution. Synonymous with Georgetown basketball. No complaints here.

No disagreement about him being an institution. I'd like a second person to be with him, saying the things we all are thinking if we happen to be watching the game on television while listening to the radio (which is what I frequently do)

Pump your breaks, hoyarad, that man's a national treasure. I love Chvotkin's voice and his intense engagement with the game. His excitement, always apparent throughout his broadcasts, enlivens simple radio pbp, and I often feel very close to the game through his words. As far as "analysis" goes, there are VERY few anlaysts out there who actually enhance a game watching/hearing experience, so why ruin the purity of the action with some BS from a (likely) schmuck who can't tell us anything we don't already know? Let me know what's happening, and I'll enjoy a broadcast. Chvotkin does that brilliantly, and that's why he's a Hoya keeper.

Besides, "analysts" always say something dumb instead of saying what you're thinking, giving you more reason to be upset with the broadcast. Careful what you wish for, or else you'll get Tim McCarver analyzing the Hoyas.

True.....but when I can't watch the game it frequently helps to have someone opining on the last possession, or what went wrong after the timeout, who may have been out of position. Maybe the game happens to fast for a pbp'r to do that...a second person would help. Not to take over the broadcast though.

I get the feeling the responses would be the same if we were winning as well. Just an opinion.

I think he's a good play by play man, but doesn't do much analysis, nor do his broadcasts include much homerism. Are we listening to the same Rich? The man ended games with 17 straight "Hoyas Win!" Need I refer you back to the Nat Burton game? "It's good! It's GOOD! It's GOOD! It's GOOD! My god it's soooooo GOOD!" How much homerism/cheering do you want to hear? Rich is THE voice of the hoyas, and a unique personality that in my opinion fits Georgetown perfectly. Yes, if you actually sync him up to the video you realize that many things that are called hookers are probably not specifically hook shots, or that the "duck under" layup is a touch overused, but for me a Georgetown game without a mention of the liftoff and vesper half, muscle tussels and the sin stripe just isn't quite the same.

I don't know who you all are listening to. I don't care if he's an institution, he is awful. He frequently gets the score wrong, and I don't need to hear about a 3 to 4 run, followed by a 6 to 3 run, followed by a 5 to 6 run. I've frequently tuned in while working and gotten confused trying to find out what is going on with the game. Go ahead and blast me, just letting you know from someone who listens to several games a year when I can't watch on TV.

Chvotkin is an ace -- nice to hear a sports announcer with a vocabulary of more than 20 words. And he keeps it moving without a color guy -- some guys on ESPN need two of them to stay afloat.
As for his purported homerism, you can be a cheerleader and still have your feet on the ground. When the Hoyas are not playing well, he says so.

You only need to look a couple of posts up and see that lic is willing to go to hell just to defend him.

ha ha..is that what lic wrote? I can never tell..... As for the "spend another decade" listening, I don't think listening for a third decade will help him grow on me. As others hate to hear on this board, he "is what he is". I'll be listening during the DePaul game.

Personally, I love Rich's broadcast style. He makes it really exciting. And I don't think there's room on his broadcasts for a second guy. He could make room, but I think that would take away from what makes him so enjoyable.

Rich is like Murray Walker. His commentary isn't perfect in a technical sense, but his over the top enthusiasm and pure love for the sport make him more enjoyable to listen to than a technically perfect commentator. They both make plenty of mistakes (Murray was legendary for his), but that just adds to the experience.
