2004-05 was not a banner year for Georgetown team titles, with only one (women's lacrosse) all year and a rare absence of titles from the cross country and track teams. But with some help from the Big East web site, here's an all-time count of conference titles per school (any co-champions in football each received a title in this calculation).
Notre Dame: 67 Villanova: 56 Pittsburgh: 52 Georgetown: 50 Connecticut: 50 St. John's: 30 Providence: 26 Syracuse: 21 Seton Hall: 19 Rutgers: 7 West Virginia: 4
Former Members: Miami: 36 Boston College: 32 Virginia Tech: 6
The Notre Dame total shows how they are really building a comprehensive sports program. In the ten years since ND joined the conference, it has won a team title in in 17 of 22 BE sports it competes in--ironically, two of those yet to be won are men's and women's basketball.
In 26 years, Georgetown has won titles in six of nine Big East men's sports it competes in (basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, outdoor track, and indoor track) and five of 11 women's sports it competes in (cross country, lacrosse, indoor track, outdoor track, volleyball). It's even more amazing to think that most of these title teams do not even have a permanent on-campus facility.
Congratulations to all the teams for their efforts in 2004-05.

It is discouraging that the men did not win a BE title this year. I guess the closest we got was the XC team, who lost to Notre Dame by 1 point.

Didn't ND win a national championship in women's basketball? That's a bit greater accomplishment than a conference title. Just ask Carmelo Anthony and Jim Boheem.

I'm struck at how anemic Syracuse total is (below Providence) Never heard much about their women's b-ball team and I don't think they play baseball anymore. Is their lax team part of BE, or did they opt out the way Miami did in baseball?

There actually is no mens lacrosse in Big East, largely because Syracuse likes to have the leverage to play whomever they would like, and there weren't until recently, enough BE schools playing lacrosse to make it a worthwhile endeavor. GU plays in the ECAC for men, Big East for women, and to date, GU is something like 30-0 in Big East women's lax, all-time.
