Interesting column from Wilbon. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/26/AR2009022603862.html?hpid=topnewsMe thinks he's been reading this board: What's surprising is the level of angst around Georgetown, given that the program reached the Final Four two years ago. What, the Hoyas are supposed to do that every year? They were never going to march through the Big East with that baby-faced team.and... All Georgetown and Maryland need to do is stay at it. What, John Thompson III is a complete dope two years after going to the Final Four? Are fans really that dumb these days? Young kids become older kids and both programs can be right back in the thick of it next season.

I'm glad he's saying this. It's chill time for Hoyas fans--when these kids grow up, they'll be fantastic, hard-nosed players (who do a little on the defensive end). I'm looking forward to it.

Are fans really that dumb these days?
Indubitably, yes. Just read the mindless drivel on this board and coming from the sloped headed cowards who hide behind fake names (i.e. FThisSystem) during HoyaChat.
I have a hard time even reading the board at times, given the garbage thrown out here by some. I mean, we all get frustrated and we all want the team to do well, and if you can't vent on a public message board, where can you vent? But the mindless attacks on the players and the repeated negative posting on the same issues by the same posters gets unbearable. And the chat? We're talking about a 'whole 'nother level' there. The one positive is that there is aworking ignore feature.

is it ok to have a man-crush on Wilbon? I've probably had one for nearly 8 years now with PTI's inception. Is there a group for this? Other Wilbon-aholics out there?

Yes, I try to watch the show nightly, but I personally can't stand him, however, he does bring a different perspective to some things. But, if he is wrong, he never goes back to correct it.-like his prediction that Memphis would blow us out.

Me thinks he had an intern read this board for him. I'd guess Wilbon does his own reading online. Kornheiser, on the other hand, probably can't get his cell phone to work half the time and would just as soon go back to typewriters.

Its funny how when other fans say what he says, they get trashed but when a sports writer says it suddenly people are willing to accept it as smart advice.

Somewhere in the deepest recesses of our addled minds, we all know this is true. We also know that this team could be better, which is frustrating and leads to negative posts. It is a long season, and sometimes the venting (which has its function) gets way overdone. But yeah, the individual attacks are really low, these are just young men trying to do their best, representing the U in an honorable manner. Maybe we should give them the chance to come to our places of work and lambaste us for missing a deadline, screwing up a memo, losing a case or a client or a patient!

there's nothing wrong with being disappointed by & critical of a team which has the proven capacity to execute, but has left a great deal of potential on the table this season.

Good article by Wilbon. He may be guilty of oversimplifying things a wee bit but the gist is spot on. This is a rebuilding year. It is what it is.
I'll be a Hoya next year...and the year after that...and the year after that.
I lived through the Pops, Esh and the first few years of III. I will live through this year as well.

I agree with him that the reaction has been a little over the top (this was always i possibility if all the factors went wrong-age, leadership, cohesiveness, etc). What i dont like is that this is the attitude that UMD fans have had to adopt for the past 5 years and has lead to over whelming mediocrity. Constructive criticism when it is warranted is great, but going over the top is sooooo pointless (like, sweatbands and their effect on this team should never be discussed).
The last thing is that as much as we complain and criticize and offer "advice" it doesnt matter because there is always someone who you know is giving JTIII a harder time- Pops. and there aint no messin with Pops

Its funny how when other fans say what he says, they get trashed but when a sports writer says it suddenly people are willing to accept it as smart advice. I didn't see where Wilbon slammed the players as talentless or called JTIII and "the system" doomed to failure. I'm pretty sure there isn't a poster on this board this season who's been trashed for attributing the team's performance to its youth and inexperience. It's the most sensible criticism you can make.
