with only 2 wins over 2 bottom-feeders the last 5 1/2 weeks. This debacle cannot end quickly enough. You could see it in the team tonight - their heads drooped early, it showed with lack of defensive effort. I'm not saying they quit - any bball player will try to hustle and score, some more than others. But I am really becoming concerned that this is the type of suffocating drain that can carry over through the off-season and well into the next season.

You're not saying they quit. Only that they quit.
Good stuff. Definitely a worthwhile thread to start.

I agree that they let the game get away early and that it showed with a lack of defensive effort that lasted pretty much the entire 1st half. But I do also think the guys buckled down in the 2nd half (I believe it was 64-54 at the 4 minute mark in the 2nd half). Giving up 23 points in the first 16 minutes of the 2nd half is not a bad effort at all. We just couldn't hit a shot from anywhere on the court to save our lives, and once it became apparently they were just going to parade to the free throw line for the rest of the night, that's when the defensive effort disappeared again.

JTIII looked completely out of answers tonight. His expression on his face was telling.
Our guys are completely frustrated. Glad to see Chris Wright a little p'o'd, and you can tell by him TRYING to make something happen.
I think our collective unit do not buy into the offense at all. And the problem is, there is no quality depth to replace them for their lack of adherence to the philosophy. So III is stuck, and thats why he has that befuddled look on his face.
Its III's mess now. He recruited all of these guys. No more Esh players around anymore to blame or take credit for. Its his program entirely, and it smells.
A lot of things to correct and develop with this group besides just experience.

You're not saying they quit. Only that they quit. Good stuff. Definitely a worthwhile thread to start. Seconded. Its funny how little perspective some people have. Yeah we are 2-9 in our last 11. You know what, we were 2-8 in our last ten before the game and we were playing the #6 team in the nation. What made you think we'd win tonight? I thought they fought hard, had some tough calls not go there way that killed momentum and made young mistakes. Anyone who thought we were going to win tonight was kidding themself.

You're not saying they quit. Only that they quit. Good stuff. Definitely a worthwhile thread to start. Not fair, but not surprising. We have all played in games, whether on a school team or in pick-up ball, where we knew we had no chance to win. We still played hard, but not with the extra fire and spark that is there when you truly believe you can win. I never got the feeling we had a chance to win tonight, and I just got the feeling early that as 'ville poured in uncontested shot after uncontested shot, many of the players lost their spark.

I'm not just talking about tonight. This is wearing on this team, and may have a long-range effect if the staff can't figure this out soon. I can't believe you're talking about some calls - silly mistakes killed any momentum far more than any calls. That sounds more like a Syracuse excuse.

Fair enough. I was yelling my head off tonight, but from about halfway through the first half, I didn't think we had a shot at winning either.

Young players get their back broken on tough calls quicker than experienced ones and I thought we had some good momentum going before we ran into some toughies. That was my point.

I was just yanking your chain. Refs weren't great, but were the same for both teams tonight. We just never had a chance - and Saturday will pretty much be the same, on the road against a good team.

Maybe if Nova opens a little worse than 7-7 from three we'll have more of a shot. Heck, if we shot a little better if could have at least been a game in the second half.

7/7 really hurt. I mean, that is just ridiculous when you think about it. They were 6/6 in the first half. I mean, if they hit 50% instead its a 1-point game and probably doesn't get down to a hack and shoot endgame.

Villanova may open 7/7 too if the 3s they take are as completely uncontested as Louisville's.
Rewatch last March's game against Louisville and compare the defensive execution to last nights. No comparison.
