Post moved into this thread: How we beat UConn ... and lost to so many others?
This year, Thabeet is even better, but we have the great equalizer in Greg Monroe. Greg is not a great low post scorer, but he can face up, and he can beat Thabeet off the dribble to the basket. Plus, Greg's a great passer from the high post. Especially after Roy drilled that three last year and Greg knocked one down in the early going, Thabeet had to be particularly mindful of playing up on our bigs. As a result, we were able to get relatively easy scores for our guards at the rim. That is a game changer agaisnt UConn. Its the same way that both Gonzaga and Michigan almost beat them. By contrast, teams like Cuse and Louisville that have more traditional centers tried to go right at Thabeet and were totally ineffective.
Any ideas as to why Greg hasn't been taking those shots from the high post when the D gives him space? In the UConn game, it did seem to be a difference maker when he made that outside shot because it opened things up inside. Lately it seems he never looks for his shot there. I do remember one game where he missed horribly from outsude. Was that shot at UConn a total fluke and he doesn't have the green light to take that shot? I'm not a basketball expert or anything, but it seems like for him and the offense to be more effective, he needs to take and make some of those shots.

Not sure I can explain the early big wins, but I have a theory about the more recent losses:
We get caught watching the paint dry.
(really, is there anything in basketball that can't be explained or solved by Hoosiers?)

Please don't encourage some of our drunk Hoya Blue members to charge the court out of the stands, screaming "You were out of position to make the call!!" Well, unless Cahill is reffing. In that case, by all means, have at it! (After all, he's gonna' call a technical on the Hoyas anyway, might as well have some fun doing it). ;D

dumb post.
We beat Uconn, memphis, demolished maryland and syracuse.
That's four elite wins. That wasn't luck.
I just love win newbies make dumb posts

Maryland is an elite win? really? they have 1 win against ranked opposition (against Michigan State) all season...gimme a break man...thats like saying a win against st. johns is a great win because they used to be good in 1970.
The UConn win was a good win, no doubt. Memphis was a nice win but their rank is a little inflated in my opinion...still a good win. Cuse is slumping, but that was a good win at the time....I mean we play so inconsistently I think that UConn win had to be us catching them on a bad night and playing well (one of the few times this year)

Seriously though, two bits of wisdom from Hoosiers that we need now: There's a, um tradition in tournament play- not talk about the next step until you've climbed the one in front of you. I'm sure going to the state finals is beyond your wildest dreams, so let's just keep it right there. And finally: DS: I got something to say. JTIII: All right, say what you've gotta say.DS: I don't know if it'll make a difference, but I figured it's time for me to start playing ball. See? Hoosiers has the cure for everything that is wrong with this team.

And one more:
Five players on the floor functioning as one single unit: team, team, team - no one more important that the other.

Theyellofallyells,
I'll give you maryland. But even if you try to devalue memphis, they still are a top 10 team right now that will keep ascending because they won't lose for the rest of the year.
We didn't get lucky at uconn. We took them apart, and we're the only team to beat them this season. Syracuse was good at the time, and good now. So as I said, I don't quite agree with your "blind squirrel" assertion.

Memphis was a good win, at the time they weren't as highly ranked...'Cuse was a good win too. I mean look, I wish the hoyas played like they did against uconn or cuse every night...but the inconsistency just makes me think it has to be something to do with luck...especially in light of how dominant uconn has been recently...

Youth, talent and inexperience - sometimes everything falls into place and everything fires on all cylinders, sometimes the wheels fall off completely. It happens to all young teams.

You don't get "lucky" with double digit wins on the road where you never trail for a single moment, with the lead never dipping below 3 points.

Are you guys (people) serious? Two words: shots fell.
Shots have started not falling and confidence fell apart. It is easy to make adjustments, yet we have played with a very low basketball IQ that would not equate with the natural talent and skill level. I think of it as a humbling required for the early success. I'm pretty clear this team has been anything but humble. And that is when team chemistry deteriorates.

How do I explain those wins? This team is good and has a lot of talent. Unfortunately, they play in a brutal league, they are young, and they are inconsistent. The margin for error and inconsistency is slllllllllllim in the BEAST.
Notre Dame is another quality team that has recently hit the Big East buzz-saw. It has happened to other teams in prior years. Over time, it may happen to us again in the future. Heck, UConn missed the NCAAs back in 2007. That is just life in this league.
We still have a lot of opportunities to turn it around- like ND just did against Louisville. It needs to start tomorrow against SUcks, a team we obviously know we can beat.

...and WVU torched Villanova Friday night. No off nights in this league.
