Wow. They suck. All of them. Just not good athletes. In comparison to who? GTown? Iowa? They're DIII for Christ's sake. Did you expect a bunch of 6'8 Bowman/Green look alikes? Some NBA ready talent? If I had had DIII basketball talent, I definately would have looked hard at Grinnell-good education, fun system. I doubt I would have been able to take "giving up" lay ups (but then again, the only thing I'm good at on the court is defense), but I definately would have looked at it. It's not a DI system, but DIII? It's fun and it works pretty well...so what's the problem? And...it'd help if they weren't so playing so tight. Though who can blame them? They're pressing b/c they're trying to show a bunch of big mouths that their system works.

Let me try to answer your questions. Ummm....it sucked in comparison to the kind of basketball that is usually on national television. What did I expect? I expected it to suck. Did I expect NBA talent? No. Do I have to enjoy it just because they were not good enough to go to the Big X and have to study like the rest of us? No.

ok i thought it was embarrassing. it was embarrassing to the game. the players just chucked it up if they had a semi decent look. i think that me and 14 of my friends could go out there and run the same system (if we were in semi decent shape) and do just as well. i played hs basketball and i think that is all you would need to be successful there. they are not even good three point shooters, so in a way they would be better off taking less shots. lets look at the big picture here, the system didnt work tonight, but i guess it works overall. i just think it was funny how the team spend 90% of there practices working on offense.
certainly would be fun though, ill implement it on my intermural team next week.

Judging Grinnell's system on this game would be like judging GTown's system on the 1st half of BC. Can you think of any other team that could shoot under 30% and keep up with a team shooting 60%? It was an interesting game to watch and if you couldn't appreciate the innovation (which would need to be modified for DI, but could still be applied) and focused on the fact you were watching a bunch of DIII athletes, well, then I think you missed the point of ESPN showing the game.

typical espn. show this garbage instead of good division I hoops. i can get 4 of my friends to go out there and chuck up 3 after 3. i'm shocked they didn't get that goof stuart scott and his crazy eyes to say 'banana's' fifty times during the game. duke and tilt, that's all espn is interested in carrying.

Next week they will be broadcasting the Men's Intramural league at Yates...
But seriously, I was in the championship game my senior year and we were definitely more talented and more athletic than that bunch.
It's not worth putting on TV if they are no better than the audience. I am not a huge fan of reality TV, and this was definitely closer to that than sports.
Also, did anyone else catch the ridiculous assertion that that sophomore player from Beloit who scored the game winning basket would be "a big time DI level player by the time he is a senior" because "he could do it all, and was only getting better"...um yeah, he was the tallest guy on the court at 6'6" - case closed.

Innovation? This isn't new. It's even been tried in the NBA. Once again, ESPN manages to "create" something out of nothing and convince everyone it is true.

Magnus ver Magnusson was one of my childhood athletic heroes. If I was flipping channels and heard "Magnus", I wasn't flipping channels anymore. Dominated his...sport, I guess...like Jordan did his.

See, I didn't know that-I thought it had been something this guy had come up w/ at Grinnell. My guess is it didn't work to well in the NBA, right?

LMU's system was not as 3-based. But then again, they actually went to an Elite 8. Grinnell is not exactly winning games. Grinnell isn't winning this year, but they've been successful the last few years. CNNSI.com had a quote from the coach who said that he'd wished they'd gotten their TV appearance last year before all their senior graduated-I think they lost something like 5 seniors.

But if you look at the history of this type of basketball, there's really nothing to say it helps you or not. I just can't imagine this system helping you beat a team better than you. How long can you stay hot at 3s with a hundred plus possessions? And giving up layups...well, Beloit really helped out Grinnell by turning the ball over way too much. Then again, St. Mary's is playing well, and they apparently play a variation of this as well. But with more D.

I saw that Westhead LMU team play LSU in the late 80's or early 90's. Chris Jackson and Shaq era. Overtime, score in 140's, totally wide open. One of the most entertaining games I have ever attended.
