We've been talking about this in another thread (and I hate to create additional clutter on the board), but I think this might be worth it.
There has been some discussion about the band and ways to make it more of a force at the games. During the course of that suggestion, members of the band have said that they would welcome any ideas for songs they should consider playing during the games. Perhaps this post could serve as a permanent spot to collect all of those suggestions, and someone in the band could take these song ideas to practice when they have them and see if any are worthwhile.

Sorry if this song is already in the rotation,
but does the band play "Heart of a Hoya", um, I mean "Eye of the Tiger"?
I did hear the "ROY ROY ROY" chant at least twice during the game!
Would this fit in the Hoya Blue Suggestion Box folder? Maybe with a slight name change?

A lot of band members are starting to arrange songs now too, so we're definitely open to new ideas. We can't promise every song (last year, we played Soak Up The Sun for the cheerleaders, and we're NOT doing that again), but whatever suggestions or thoughts you guys have would be awesome!
go band! go hoyas!

Last night during one of the team timeouts in the last 5 minutes of the game we played it and I definitely heard a bunch of the fans in the student section singing along with the roys. It was awesome.

Wasn't "...Then I got high" in the rotation one year? Or was that one of the highschool bands that filled in?

When Don Reid blocked a shot or fouled somebody hard, the band would play the Darth Vader theme (you know ... da da da-da, da da da da da-da). I suggest doing the same when Green/Hibbert block or foul somebody hard.
In one of the quotes from the ESPN Classic coverage last night, Patrick Ewing said that Georgetown was the Raiders of college basketball and people were afraid of them. It would be nice if it were that way again.

This thread should be moved to the Hoya Blue thread... it's nice that we're discussing how to improve the band, an important part of school spirit at college basketball games.
I, for one, would like to see more interaction between the band and the student section. A great example of this is the Hey song played during the last TV timeout of each game. There's a call and response of the "Heyyy" and then, during the part everyone knows, the crowd yells, "Hey!" then points to the opposing bench and yells, "You suck!" I love that. We need more songs like that where crowd interaction is invovled. The Fight Song is a good one too.
I went to a Notre Dame football game this fall and their marching band is amazing. There's a wide variety of cheers that the band leads that everyone in the student section knows. I'd like to see more of that here.
Also, the band does start chants, but often they are separate from the chants of the student section. We need to synergize. A simply way to get everyone involved is for the whole band to yell "Hoya" at times during the game, and the entire student to yell "Saxa" in response. I can see that being really loud.
And finally, I love the old-school rugby shirts. You should wear those for EVERY game! Tell your band director that, haha. ;D

A few things: 1) The rugbys are an example of the grass always been greener on the other side--i was part of the group that got rid of them and I remember at the time just about everyone was happy to bid them goodbye. It's funny to hear everyone happy to see them again. Perhaps we just associate them with successful times. At any rate, there aren't enough around the band room anymore--they'd have to track down and raid the closets of a couple of alums to get enough . 2) The Imperial March has been retired following one of Don Reid's most memorable moments -- "the Shot" ("dematerialized at half court . . . rematerialized under the basket"). 3) Notre Dame does have an amazing amount of coordination, but that is also due to the fact that the school runs organized pep rallies before games to get everyone on board. When you live in the middle of nowhere, its easy to get people on board for that.

1) Well, I'm a big fan of the rugbys, regardless of whether it reminds of the glory days or not. A lot of other schools still have em (Duke unfortunately), and I think they're real classy. I think they should be back to stay, but it's not my decision.
2) Fair enough.
3) Yes, I agree, but just b/c we're in a city and don't have pep rallies before every game doesn't mean we can't coordinate cheers better. There's gotta be a way. This is one of the several areas where I think Hoya Blue drops the ball. Just think if we coordinated the cheerleaders, the band, and Hoya Blue together to created unified cheers in the student section. How awesome would that be!

Tell your band director that, haha. ;D The Hey song isn't the only call response song we play, it's just that that's the only one the students know. There are 2 others. The cheerleaders know the others but they're not too loud I guess. I don't really know how we would be able to teach those to the student section though without them hearing the songs. The Hoya Saxa idea is great, kind of like what we do at the end of the fight song. Maybe another one could be us saying De and the student section saying Fense. That'd be cool. And like Tables said, we only have a few of the rugbies left. If you looked closely we didn't even have enough last night and some people had to wear the polo shirts we wore a couple years ago. Plus they're pretty nasty. Even after washing them, by the end of the game we looked and smelled like the pep band of the 80s.

If we do I'll try to see if we can practice it a little at the women's game on Saturday.

I remember someone earlier in the season mentioned how the band used to play the Imperial March when the team came out or something. I suggested it to the director and we tried it at i think the Temple game but it was really ineffective because it was kinda a last minute thing. we didn't even look at the piece before hand. Hopefully we can bring it back for the remaining games.
Regarding the dance team getting front row seats, maybe they can just put them behind the band for games?? We do have 2 extra rows, but I'd imagine they'll start inviting all their friends to sit w/ them and we'll face the same issue of instruments being damaged. I don't understand why they don't stay in their uniforms during the entire game and maybe contribute more to the games other than a 1 minute routine that ends abruptly.
I personally prefer the rugby shirts BY FAR to the uniforms we wear now, only because I like to have a little bit of self-dignity in public.... But as hoyatables said, I don't think we'll be wearing those on a consistent basis any time soon because we just don't have enough to distribute to the entire band and also because we just bought our new uniforms last year.
go band! go hoyas!
