The worst thing right now is how this team folds. And I mean it FOLDS.
When faced with having to stand up and fight, the Hoyas cower in the corner. We have not fought in ONE GAME this year not ONE. When our massive talent isn't blowing out a team all game like 'Cuse, Maryland, or UConn, we have no fight, none.
I take that back, Greg seems to care. Everyone else needs a serious gut check.
The worst part is we're not even getting any experience in close games. Once we're out of it, we're toast. See you Tennessee, Pitt, and WVU, have fun laughing at us at the finish line. It's pretty embarrassing. Let's hope JTIII goes JTII on this team after this one.

It's baffling. In the Syracuse and UCONN games we showed great hustle, intensity and execution throughout the game and looked like a legit title contender. In games like this and Pitt, we hang around for 25 or so minutes and then just fade away. And you're right, we don't seem to care about it. This is not a talent issue.

I never really understand when people say that the coaches quit or that the coaches were flat or not prepared... I mean, I just don't know how you gauge that.
But yea, tonight's game was the opposite of "sac-ing up". I'm trying to think of another game where we showed such a lack of character. Maybe ODU in McDonough, maybe USF in '06... I dunno. I worry a bit about the team culture of this team. When we got the UConn win people were writing some nice things about how team chemistry was better than ever and such... I'm no insider but I can't help but think this team lost a lot of its backbone when Jon, Roy, Pat, Tyler and even Jeff left. Those were special guys who not only had game but who were really high character guys. I don't think the current team has that same character, and it manifests itself in a number of ways. From our guys complaining and throwing their hands up after EVERY SINGLE FOUL CALL to not playing with guts and rolling over in a game like this. We've got talent for sure but I think mentally we're a long way away.

The only way to fix said "folding" is for us to get beat like this more. We have to get sick of it. Tonight we looked like we were sick of it. Thats the only way to get better, its sticks, but its the only way. Hopefully they are sick of losing like this now.

We were behind the whole game. Outhustled, outrebounded, out played. Yet with 5 minutes left, we still had 3 timeouts left. Sometimes you need a butt-roasting to try to shake things up, at least make the effort. Roaming the sideline with a pained look on your face isn't enough.

I gotta say, I'm not sure I saw a lack of hustle. Bad decisions like jacking up totally unnecessary three? Yup. Other bad decisions? Mmm-hmm. Team way out of sync? No question. A VERY tentative looking Sapp? Oh yea! But no hustle? I'm not so sure.

That's the main issue with this team as opposed to the last three: they don't find way to win like those teams did.

We didn't quit against Notre Dame or Duke, so I'm not sure I would say the team lacks heart. What we saw last night was just a 35 minute abomination (the first five minutes were ok) - way worse than either Pitt or Tennessee.
I do wonder, however, where professorhoya is with his nonsense about how this year's team has so much better chemistry than last year's regular season BE champion team.

One of the things that characterized GU teams in recent years - and it wasn't "heart" - it was poise - they would keep running the offense, taking good shots, playing their game, even inside of ten minutes and when down 5-10 points. The UNC game was the signature example of that, but there were many more.
I agree with Hoyarooter - team didn't quit against Duke or ND. And against Pitt and Tennessee, not sure the collapse was do to "folding" as it was due to rushed shots.
What no posters seem to have noted is that this team is undergoing a major transition from a team that scores in the low 60s to one that scores in the mid 70s. That comes with faster shots. I wonder if the poor shot selection, missed threes, and turnovers in the last ten minutes of some of the losses this year are a result of the faster pace of play and the fact that we are seeing the flip side of more shots/possessions. The team, in short, doesn't have the discipline in past years - or control, or whatever you want to call it - and when the going gets tough their judgment and poise seems to suffer.

When you get beat senseless and dominated and have no answer, the competitior feels there is no hope and waves the white flag.
Thats our team. We don't have answers for some teams, and there is no X's and O's that can help us. the WVU game was a shining example.
UCONN did not show up against us. They took us for granted, and we came to play.
We played waaaaaay above our heads against Syracuse. We hitting everything.
We are a middle of a pack team, and its time for folks to realize this.

Yep, our two big wins are explainable because one team just sucked that day and we just shot lights out against the other. On the other hand, our losses are just explainable by the fact that we aren't very good. Makes perfect sense. If you walk around with a dark cloud over your head all day. I know you're just trying to inject your own sense of realism, but maybe some fans aren't willing to accept that. Even if you are right (and I don't agree that you are), what's so terrible about being optimistic rather than pessimistic. Maybe part of being a fan is having hope that things are better than they appear or that things will improve. And in the meantime, another part of being a fan is having the ability to bitch and moan about bad performances on these threads.
