If you guys get a Lost thread, I get a BSG thread. I'm thinking with all the revelations of the first episode this season, I'm guessing the following: - there are two types of skinjobs: the originals from earth (including the Final Five) that age and have millions of models, and the Significant Seven type that we all know.
- The earth type of Cylon were the gods of Kobol.
- The final five were an attempt by some far-seeing entity to end the humanity-creates robots-robots rise-everyone dies-survivors found a new planet cycle
Discuss! Also, Dirk Bendict is whining that the original BSG was better and it's some sort of great crime that Starbuck is now a woman. I'm guessing he's just bitter that Richard Hatch got a role on the new series and he didn't.

I like BOTH threads!
Your explanation of the different types of skinjobs seems to work. Not sure if it's right or not, but the writers DEFINITELY have some 'splainin' to do after the first episode last Friday.
Someone has to explain Starbuck. When you creep out even Leoben, something's really messed up about you.
As for which series is better, well, I don't like to make that comparison. They are both good, but they are different shows.
The initial BSG was a fun action show, good for kids and family. Sure, one of the characters was a prostitute, but other than that, this was pure family entertainment. I catch a re-run here and there and I remember how much I loved that show as a young kid, but it doesn't really hold up for me anymore. Cylon centurions as cowboy sheriffs? Umm, not so much.
The new show is completely different. It is a much more mature drama, with less emphasis on action (though the action scenes are amazing). Viewing it today, I would say it's clearly better, but I probably wouldn't say that 30 years ago (good God has it been that long?), because I probably wouldn't have been able to understand what was going on at all (not that I do now either).
I think Richard Hatch works on the new show. Dirk Benedict would've been over the top....because Dirk Benedict is always over the top.

Richard Hatch was a driving force behind bringing the concept back in the form of a new show which is why he is on it. the original was fun but this show is well acted, complex and interesting on so many levels that the first one never came close to attempting.
i am not a fan of the entire starbuck plot line - it has gone way to far for them to have an acceptable- in my eyes- resolution of that plot line.
Dee killing herself was crazy. one of those moments on the show that i didnt see coming AT ALL but when i look back at the episode realize it was set up perfectly and that she was the in large part the focus of the whole episode.
how are they going to wrap up so much stuff in 9 episodes i cant begin to fathom at this point.
how soon does roslin die or do they wait for the last episode? when are the cavil led cylons going to re-appear and what about the cylons who recently got free will, are we going to see any more of that potential problem?
my pessimistic expected wrap up of the series is that starbuck is jesus - i dont know my religion well enough to know if that makes baltar moses or what- and that when the colonials shed their pagan belief system for the one true god that the cylons already worship they will find the path to salvation and a home. at this point i will be so disappointed that i think i might swear off television for the rest of my life.

If there's any religious overtones, it's going to be Mormon, not standard Christian. The original series and the reimagined one both take a lot of their plot cues from the Book of Mormon.

I think Richard Hatch works on the new show. Dirk Benedict would've been over the top....because Dirk Benedict is always over the top. I dunno. The original BSG just seems like some studio head's reaction to Star Wars. "Holy crap, people like this. Make something else like this, quick." I also didn't like how sanguine everyone seemed after their entire civilization is destroyed. Dirk Benedict's Starbuck didn't let Armageddon slow down his skirt-chasing and cigar chomping. The new show is probably the best political show on television. And like any good political show, it doesn't hit you over the head with the politics and lets you draw your own conclusions. Although a treatise on Laura Roslin's political philosophy would be interesting, as she swings wildly between left and right throughout the series. (Apropos this, I think the Colonial democracy is a sham, and the true government is an Adama-Roslin oligarchy. But as per the Season 3 finale, civilization's destroyed, that's not necessarily a terrible thing that can't be forgiven). I also appreciate BSG for their attempts at scientific accuracy (no sound in space! Thrusters all over the place on a Viper!) and their gritty lack of utopianism about technology (even in the future nothing works).

Let's be honest here, this show is coasting (not for lack of trying, just lack of execution) on its spectacular first two seasons.
Since then... meh.

Didn't Felix Gaeta used to be sort of a wuss?
Man, having your leg shot off turns you into a badass, I suppose.
I think he's my favorite character going on the show right now.

I don't know if it makes you a badass, but it apparently really makes you hate the Cylons. Did you watch the webisodes before this season? They explain Gaeta's motivations in this season (you find out what Baltar whispered to him back at the end of season 3).

"all this has happened before and all this will happen again" of course the cylons will become citizens and become the 13th seat at the quorum, they were the lucky 13th tribe before and will be again, kind of disappointed in myself for not seeing that coming before the cheif asked for it. what i am most anxious to see is how they introduce the rest of the backstory of earth and the cylons that lived there. when and how to do we find out why they were killed? i figure it was humans who wiped them out and then the humans were cast out of kobol for their act to go off and form the 12 colonies only to have this repeated on them 2000 years later. isnt that part of the mythology, that humans were cast out of kobol for some reason? any theories on that?
also, i have always thought Gaeta & D were the only charachters you could set you watch by, they never waivered from the morale straight path even when it was difficult. it seems to me that everyone else has had misteps or questioned themselves at somepoint. which side would you choose here in the coming revolution? if i were there, i think i would have to be with gaeta. i wouldnt necessarily trust zarek but i completely see where gaeta is coming from. if you havent watched the webisodes you should, all together the time equals another episode, not crucial but interesting knowledge that shows more of why gaeta does what he does and makes you think he might be right.
from the viewers perspective of course you know that finding a way to work with the cylons has such potential up side that you gotta take a chance on it regardless of the risk, you can also look at it as a "draw my enemies closer" type strategy.
i just keep saying to myself, how are they going to wrap up the million and one plot lines going here in 8 episodes? there are major players we havent really seen in these last two eps.

Clearly, I have to watch these Webisodes. I caught one or two of them, but didn't see them all.
I thought I was doing my job as a fan last time by watching Razor. Obviously, I have dropped the ball on this and should be airlocked.

The second episode sucked. Nothing really happened other then setup for other episodes. It was the most boring ep in a long time.

The setup seemed to be worth it, as this episode was pretty awesome. Starbuck kicking ass is always fun to watch.
I think what's really going to be fun to see is if everyone's forgiven again. Adama made that brash speech when Gaeta first took over, but by the end he seemed content to let the mutineers live. This was not Starbuck's position, to say the least. If the Adama-ites come out on top, it'll be interesting to see who's preferences prevail.

They certainly seemed to set up the idea that Adama is going to be executed in the next episode (both with the blindfold in the airlock and with Laura Roslin's fury).
I've been thinking about that for a couple of days. Now, normally, I would say no way. They're never going to kill him off.
But there's only a handful of episodes left in this whole series. Would it really be out of the question for them to off the Admiral? I don't think so.
Chances are, it won't be that ballsy, and Roslin's fury is because she THINKS that they executed him.
I agree with Bando that this was one really awesome episode.
On the other hand, I am now one episode closer to the end of the series, and I STILL don't have any frakkin' answers!

great episode, starbuck kicking ass is always better than starbuck brooding, baltar and his appeal to gaeta, just like old times for adama and tigh, a lot of good stuff.
no way things will be forgiven, first off it gives them a chance to kill off some people who's story lines they dont have the time or interest to pursue,
also i think there is a difference for adama between some idiot infantry level soldiers getting caught up in something they dont understand and someone at a higher level who should know better.
Gaeta is brilliant, i loved seeing the plot unfold, also it is fun to watch since as a viewer i am rooting for adama but i think that if i were a crew member i would be with gaeta.
which side would you choose?
allow the cyclons to put technology you dont understand on your ships just in time for cavil to show up and now control your ships? how can you trust them so quickly regardless of what has happened in the recent past? adama's best friend is a cylon, the presidents top advisor was a cylon, how can you trust their judgement in all this.
the only reason you know to side with adama is that Zarek is on the other side and he is always out for himself, of course if i was asked by gaeta to join his revolution i would join up, he possibly the most likable and most principaled character in the whole series.

At least it will be an enjoyable month or two. Feel free to chime in here with any comments on the past seasons as you have them.
And just so you're properly caught up, I believe the complete output is thus (in this order):
Miniseries Season 1 Season 2 "The Resistance" Webisodes Season 3 "Razor" (tv movie) "Razor Flashbacks" webisodes (included on the Razor DVD) Season 4.0 "The Face of the Enemy" webisodes Season 4.5

what happens in the razor flashbacks? i never saw that It fleshes out the Young Adama story a lot more (it was cut for time). Like I said, it's part of the DVD release, and you can still see them on the SciFi website.
