For those planning to head out before the game tomorrow, the WVU alumni group plans to meet at Penn Qtr Sports Tavern. According to their talkboard, their fans also plan to go to the Green Turtle and RFD. Last time they came to town they also mobbed Clyde's. I plan to pre-game at an undisclosed location and avoid them altogether.

WVU does present some problems for the Hoyas. They defend well, defend the 3 especially well, force turnovers, get offensive boards, and are almost as inconsistent as we are (332 v. 341 on kenpom) so who knows which team shows up.
That said, the Hoyas can't sleep on them but I expect the Hoyas to control the tempo and frustrate them before pulling away for a double-digit win.

Cross-post action! My Hoop Club Blog pre-game post on the GU-WVU game, "The No-Goaltending Call Was Coming From Inside Your Hooouuussseeee!!!": guhoyas.cstv.com/genrel/012109aac.htmlOn the parallels between the Mountaineers (specifically the WVU Coliseum) and 1970s slasher films. For the record, the Carrier Dome's parallel is a big budget action movie, and my best guess right now is the Verizon Center = a romantic comedy. I also contend in the post that the only two GU-WVU games I can think of that created a lasting memory are the 2007 "Grabby" game and the 2003 MCI Center game that gave us the Esherick rant about how the officiating was "crap" and "unfair". Wanna take a wild guess who the lead official was for that game? statsheet.com/mcb/games/2003/01/12/west-virginia-82-georgetown-84

I thought all mentions of him had been thoroughly scrubbed...

One of the pregame articles said that WVU doesn't rebound well.
They aren't a great D rebounding team, but they are one of the better offensive rebounding teams out there, led by basically every forward they have.
Off the top of my head, we've done much better versus collective rebounding teams like this -- who may do more through effort -- than someone like Blair. But I could be wrong.
The other thing WVU does really well is force turnovers. After our uneven performance against Duke, that's a concern.
WVU is struggling a bit right now, and isn't a very good shooting team. But they play good D and play hard.
The way we lose this game is to not take of the ball and not hit the boards. If we do those things, and just shoot half-decently, I think we win.

yeah i thought their lack of rebounding in big east play was interesting. They're a very small team: "Remember when West Virginia started Big East play with a plus-10 average rebounding margin? The Mountaineers were fifth in the entire country at the time, an astounding statistic for what amounts to a center-less basketball team.
Well, don't look now but Big East play has started and in WVU's first four league games the Mountaineers haven't rebounded a thing. In league games only, they rank 12th out of 16 teams in rebounding margin. And the only really big team they've faced so far is UConn."
So I think if we concentrate we can do just fine on the boards.

Well, it's not entirely true they've fallen apart in rebounding.
They shut down Seton Hall (I know, not hard), but perhaps not as badly as they should have.
Connecticut destroyed them.
Both they and Marquette did well on the O boards, but not great -- somewhat expected since both are undersized, active teams that do well on the O boards.
They gave up a lot of O boards to South Florida, but got a lot as well.
WVU isn't a great rebounding team, but they are a good offensive rebounding team. And aside from UConn, they have been pretty good (not great) recently.

remember it was sapp's clutch 3 in morgantown which gave the hoyas the lead prior to pe jr's block. nothing would make me happier than to see sapp get back on track tonight (besides a win of course).
LET'S GO HOYAS!

statsheet.com/mcb/games/2003/01/12/west-virginia-82-georgetown-84Cahill appears to be averaging about 20 Technicals/year. Any idea what the average is for all officials?

And it is highly unlikely Cahill will be assigned to this game.
