I'll put money on it that Summers has some "thug" in him, in terms of when he turns on, something changes in his eyes. If he wants to and really makes a point of it, I think he can be the guy to start asserting himself down low.

"It's about desire and persistence," Thompson III told reporters Friday. "I've had various questions from you guys, 'What drills are you working on?' 'How are you working on it?' We could do drills until the cows come home, and at the end of the day you've got to go get the ball. Can you improve on that? Hopefully.

I don't think it's about "thugs." I think it's about our defensive focus is on denying good shot opportunities and that puts us in poor rebounding position.

I don't think it's about "thugs." I think it's about our defensive focus is on denying good shot opportunities and that puts us in poor rebounding position. It's a combination of that plus we basically play a 3 guard offense most of the time. (either the 6-4 Freeman or 6-2 Clark at the 3) If the other team pulls Monroe or Summers away from the basket, usually to the top of the key, the rebounding is really vulnerable. The counter is to develop Simms/Vaughn enough so that against certain teams like Pittsburgh, we have 3 tall players down low.

I like your suggestion re Sims?Vaughan. Especially given what we saw from Henry today, I can see JT3's subs pattern being very situational, depending on whom we are facing and how the game is going.

Waiting two years isn't much of an option.

I don't think it's about "thugs." I think it's about our defensive focus is on denying good shot opportunities and that puts us in poor rebounding position. OUr defensive focus is a factor, but not an excuse. If we aren't clearing our defensive boards, we aren't playing good defense. "Thugs" is a bit of an exaggeration. Pops is talking about guys like Don Reid, Jerome, Graham, Boubacar, Jahidi... big, tough guys who dish out punishment and who won't be pushed around under the bucket. We need guys like that to push back v. Blair and Gody. ROY was very effective vs. Gody. Frustrated the heck out of him and Aaron Gray too .. in their later games. Blair and Dorsey still managed to get the better of Roy despite their height because of their heft and determination. If we had one or two guys like that (e.g Julian Vaughan) it would really help this team out a lot. But, so far it looks like we don't. Doesn't mean we give up and go home, it means we need to come up with schemes to compensate... and determination. Some of the BE match-ups are going to be tough for us. But Gregory is a match-up problem for everyone. So is Summers. We need to take greater advantage of the match-ups that favor us than we give away in the ones that don't.

I wasn't trying to make an excuse, and I haven't exactly seen teams pulling Greg and Dajuan from the basket as that is rarely an opponent's strength in our matchup.
But I think it is telling that as our rebounding has improved, our defense has been less proficient. Challenging shots requires a far different defensive mindset than does blocking out, and it shows.
Yes, I agree that there are certain widebodied-types who may excel at rebounding, but question the net impact of such demonstrably less fleet of foot, less skilled players in offensive and defensive schemes that require more than a "banger" could reasonably give in more than spot minutes.

Man if we had Mike Sweetney (even as a freshman) on THIS team - i'd say at least a final 4.

Michael Graham was featured at the game on Saturday and was announced to the crowd. Doesn't he still have a couple years of eligibility? I'd say he tips the scales around 310 lbs these days.
