for 3 pointers, of course.
The GU record is 188 made, and 568 attempted, in 1995-96 season. That year it was mostly Allen and Vic jacking up threes, to a decent 33.1%. They also had 37 games to do it in, since they went to the Elite Eight and the BE Finals.
This year's GU squad is going to blow that away. Even assuming we continue on our slightly slower Big East pace (7 pg), and just two post-season games, we'll go 215-604, a 35.6% clip. Not too shabby.
If we managed to play 37 games (which is actually impossible) to equal that 95-96 team, we'd hit 271-768, attempting 200 more shots and making almost 100 more.
This team will likely not beat the GU mark for efficiency, a stunning 39.3% in 1988-89, led by (I assume) Mark Tillmon.
In fact, Tillmon's arrival, which coincided with the inrotduction of the 3-pointer, also marks the four most efficient three point shooting teams in GU history.
This team will likely be the first Non-Tillmon team to break the Top 4 in 3 PT FG%.

If we have to play four games in the BET and six in the NCAAs, we'd have 37. I'm actually surprised by these numbers, though, since it seems like we miss about a dozen threes per game. But a record is a record

Wow. If this team ends the season shooting better than 39.3% from behind the arc, that would be one of the most amazing transformations in college ball. Perception often times becomes reality, and the perception of the Hoyas for the past 10 or so years has been "good defensive team, scores on fast breaks and put backs, can't shoot the three". The only additional player from last year that has a significant amount of 3 point attempts is Wallace, yet the accuracy has improved a lot. Shot selection is important, but the last 3 years of Sweetney's tenure , the Hoyas had many open 3 point shots, that just would not fall. Therefore it has to be more than just shot selection. I think it is a mindset that JT3 has cultivated in these young Hoyas. The players have to believe that you are commited to the 3 pt shot, rather it being viewed as a necessary evil to be used only if your center is double teamed.

In the last few weeks, our 3FG% pct has dropped a bit, from 39.1 to 36.3. Hopefully we can pick that up over the next three games and be confidently hitting open shots as we head into crunch time.

But a record is a record You're right. I was thinking it unlikely that a team that couldn't grab a bye went to the National Title game, but technically not impossible. We make about 7 3s per game in BE play, so we DO miss about a dozen a game.
