While updating season split statistics this morning, I noticed this: Against KenPom's Top 50 teams (Pitt, UConn, Memphis, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Maryland), Austin Freeman (3/16) and Chris Wright (3/18) are a combined 6/34 from 3FG [18%]. Against other teams, they are 19/42 [45%] (9/22, 10/20 respectively).

this is hardly a "fun" fact...personally I had no fun reading that...it was more of a "horrified" reaction...that needs to change

Here's the fun part - despite those abnormally awful numbers from two of our best players, we still won half those games.
We've seen some very impressive things from this team so far, but I still think we've yet to see them at their best. This team has the capability to be unstoppable.

So basically, if Chris or Austin can play against the good teams like they play against the bad teams, we can beat anyone. Because if we add their increased production, we would have topped Notre Dame easily. And Pitt would have been a whole different game if we went on a little run once or twice more (imagine 12 minutes left, up by 6...we play a different game the rest of the way out).

Can we re-name this thread "Hoya Fun Fact not Concerning Monroe"?

Funny how we can now pencil in Greg and Dajuan (in the rare times they're not in foul trouble) for consistently good performances, and that how far we go will be determined by how well our guards shoot from the perimeter. You can bet the two games following Providence will require some competence from 3 if we are going to have a shot at winning either game.

well there are two ways to look at this. you can say chris and austin have been "slumping" and we'll be fine once they start to play well against better teams, or, maybe more logically, it points to the fact that the two are struggling to find space/take good shots when they have to go up against better competition.

I think a lot of it has to do with the type of shots that are being taken.
Of our three-point shooters this year, it seems that only Dajuan is productive with either set shots or shots in motion (all seem to be capable if they are fed the ball while directly stepping into the shot, as should be expected). Omar seems comfortable taking shots in motion but the results are generally poor. Chris should be comfortable with either but, as the point, seems to be the default 3-point-taker late in the shot clock if nothing else materializes. Jessie also ends up with that duty to some degree but, to my eye, he has always been better hitting the 3 when he's in motion (either off the dribble or coming around a screen); he doesn't seem to produce on the set shots as well (except, perhaps, from the corner) -- they just don't seem natural for him. Austin does not look at all comfortable if he isn't set prior to shooting (or, sometimes, even prior to receiving the pass). I haven't seen enough of Jason to make a competent judgment and while I'd like to see Henry and Julian make some shots from 3 (as they were supposed to be able to do, especially since their height can lead to more open looks) to make them work better in the offense, results thus far make me wonder if that would be wise.
Given this (if it is, indeed, a correct assessment), I'd try to get Austin to pump & drive rather than take a dribble to adjust if he gets the ball with a chance for a three without his feet being set -- he might even draw a few good fouls that way if the defender gets up in the air (his wide body being an advantage in this regard). Omar should let fly only if he's got a wide-open shot (though he could occasionally do it from a few feet outside the arc since it doesn't seem to matter too much when he's on). Jessie needs to keep moving (not that he doesn't most of the time), unless a pass might be coming to him from the inside so that he could step into his shot; standing in open space waiting for a pass from the perimeter just doesn't seem to get him in the right mindset for the shot. Late in the shot clock, if we can't get it in to Greg, I'd like to see Dajuan get the ball with about 8-10 seconds left to try to create -- he's shown he can but I often see it happen earlier in the clock than I'd like; it looks like he's green-lighted whenever he's open and I'd keep it that way. I'd like to green-light Chris for any open 3 but I know he has to think about running the offense and I'd rather he continue to get more comfortable with the idea of being the floor general. If Henry is going to keep taking shots, I'd try to get him to go a bit slower on them -- he seems to rush it a bit even when there is nobody closing on him who has the height to alter the shot.
Just some thoughts.

On the brightside, atleast we don't have to worry that we depend too much on hot shooting from the perimeter, and that later in the season our guards will eventually cool down in this area and our offense will suffer. We know Austin, Jesse, and Chris all have the ablities to be great shooters, and have shown it before so they aren't totally hopeless in that area, yet.
