After reading Andy Katz' weekly watch, I'm done with the media's predictions in the Big East. It's going to be a grind for every team, and that's to be expected given the quality of the league. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/notebook?page=notebook/weeklywatch097What's funny is that in the span on 1 week, they've annointed three presumptive champions of this league. Last Monday morning, it was UConn, by Monday night it was our Hoyas and on Saturday afternoon it was Pittsburgh. Not taking anything away from Pitt, but is their win any more impressive than ours? Not at all. What happens when Pitt loses to UConn, ND or Louisville? Even though UConn, Louisville and ND has dropped some key games early, the media will be sure to latch on to one of them as another presumptive league champion. I just hope we take care of business on Monday. We still our own destiny in this league and we are still the 2 time defending champions.

I'd rather them talk about this than any of those teams in North Carolina and the media darling Hansbrough (granted they did talk about Wake below the Pitt spotlight).
Also, by losing to Pitt we don't control our own destiny for a repeat of the BE championship.

Thats whats so great about basketball, once you expect something to happen, it almost certainly won't happen. People put too much value into results in Decemeber and January.

But that's a silly thing to say 2 games into the big east season. I mean no one's going undefeated the winner of the league will have at least 4 losses more likely than not so we still control our own destiny in reality. Remember we're getting our tough stretch out of the way. After these 3 games the rest of the season will be comparatively easy.

Also, by losing to Pitt we don't control our own destiny for a repeat of the BE championship. Technically, we wouldn't control our own destiny IF it were a matter of us being tied with Pitt. By the same token, we'd be sitting pretty if we were tied with UConn. There are so many good teams and so many games between them, who even knows what'll happen. I'm a believer that it's actually more important when considering Top 4 places in the conference to avoid losses to the bottom feeders--inasmuch as I assume that the top 5-6 will split many of their games against each other but fewer of those teams will lose to the bottom 5-6. To that end, the most significant early game of the BE season for positioning so far is ND's loss to St. John's.

Agree flhoya that so far the biggie is the johnnies beating the domers. Yup. That is key and we MUST be in the top four to win the tourney, only the top four that is th goal.

The media treats college bball as they would college football. They look at every game like it will cost a team a championship. That's what makes bball 10x better than college fball: March Madness, where anything can happen.

Oh, come on - wouldn't you rather college basketball pick the top two teams at the end of the season for a one game playoff, while Georgetown heads to Boise, Idaho, for a meaningless game against UCLA?

Could it be played on a blue court?

What I find amazing is that no one has yet talked about the nexus between the UNC loss and the power of the Big East. The Big East is so tough this year that even programs that left the conference years ago are thumping ACC favorites. That, my friends, defines a good conference.

I think Miami will give them a run - especially if they play in Miami as well.
