who is voting for maryland? Gary Williams, Karl Hobbs and some dude Feinstein got drunk while he was filling out his ballot. EDIT: Ugh! indeed on Syracuse being ahead of us this week, but they have earned their ranking to date this year....unlike some teams I could mention (cough-villanova-cough). No worries though. Magoo and his brood will melt down later in the year, just as they alwyas do.

We should not be behind a two loss Purdue team. That's my only major gripe. We won't be anymore if we take care of business today and Saturday.

Nova gets a chance to justify their ranking tomorrow. Cuse has earned their ranking. 8 from the Big East in the Top 25 with Marquette's return- is that a (meaningless) record of some sort?

michigan state loses by 18 to Maryland who then loses by 30 to us yet Michigan State is still ahead of us in some polls. Don't follow the logic but not really losing sleep over it either. Looking forward to tearing apart Sav. State and Memphis this week.

Looking forward to tearing apart Sav. State and Memphis this week. Michigan State started at 6 and we started around 18. Pollsters move teams up and down based on losses or wins vs. other ranked teams. It's stupid, but it's what they do. EDIT: More importantly, Pomeroy continues to adore us, which is a far more meaningful "poll" anyway.

Pomehoya rating I call it! Regarding the AP ranking its so pointless early in the season. The conference schedule hasnt even started. I guess what matters is where we end up.. Cant wait to take it too S.STATE. Then I really feel good about Memphis! Go hoyas

Still 6 voters in the AP poll without Georgetown in their top 25. Some teams that these six voters like more than us: Dayton Michigan Northwestern Missouri Illinois St. Mary's BYU Butler Baylor

Not going to complain about the ranking.
We have not played a true road game yet. That scares me too, because we have a young team. Until we beat a good team on the road, they are not going to rise too much in the polls.

Not that I expect this is the way the teams will stack up at the end of the season, but, among those receiving votes in either poll, here are a few adjustments of my own based on performance to date (and, to some degree, on pre-season expectation, in the case of certain undefeateds who haven't played anyone):
1) Gonzaga (undefeated with no close games; won OSC, beating Ok St, UMD and Tenn) 2) UNC (undefeated with no close games; wins vs ND and at Michigan St) 3) UConn (undefeated; yes, Buffalo was a scare but at least they have a decent victories over Miami (FL) and Wisconsin) 4) Xavier (undefeated; survived Va Tech and beat Memphis to win the Puerto Rico Tip-Off; beat Missouri at home) 5) Pitt (undefeated; wins over Texas Tech and WaSU aren't exactly thrilling but they've been dominant) 6) Syracuse (undefeated; beat Florida and squeaked by Kansas, essentially at Kansas; survived scares against Richmond and UVA at home) 7) Oklahoma (undefeated; squeaked by Purdue in NY and Davidson at home; survived against Gardner-Webb at home) 8) Tennessee (beat GU but lost to Gonzaga in OSC) 9) Ohio St (undefeated; wins at Miami (FL) and ND in Indianapolis; limited schedule) 10) Wake Forest (undefeated; neutral-court win over Baylor) 11) Baylor (beat Providence and Arizona St in Anaheim before losing to WF; won at WaSU) 12) Duke (solid win at Purdue; win in 2K Sports Classic over Michigan tempered by loss at Michigan two weeks later; "free throw game" win over URI at Cameron is laughable) 13) Villanova (hasn't lost but who've they played?) 14) Notre Dame (win over Texas in Hawaii was nice, but loss to UNC was convincing; weak in loss to Ohio St in Indianapolis -- how much does one believe Harangody's being limited by health in the losses?) 15) Texas (close loss to ND in Hawaii and close win over UCLA at home) 16) Dayton (undefeated; squeaked by Auburn and beat Marquette in Chicago Invitational) 17) Missouri (only loss was a close one to Xavier in Puerto Rico; beat USC in Puerto Rico and Cal at home by a wide margin) 18) Clemson (undefeated; close wins over Temple to take Charleston Classic and at Illinois) 19) Memphis (beat Seton Hall and lost to Xavier in Puerto Rico) 20) Georgetown (loss to Tennessee in OSC; blew out UMD in same) 21) Davidson (close loss at Oklahoma; beat NC St at home) 22) Arizona St (beat Nebraska at home; win at SDSU may or may not be decent; loss to Baylor in Anaheim) 23) Butler (undefeated; close win over Northwestern at home) 24) Minnesota (undefeated; best wins are at home over UVA and Eastern Washington) 25) Northwestern (close loss at Butler; soundly beat Florida St and crushed DePaul at home)
OTHERS (in rough order): Florida St (loss at Northwestern; squeaked by Florida at home thanks to a big free-throw differential; won Global Sports Classic, beating Cincy and Cal) BYU (undefeated against weak schedule) LSU (undefeated against extremely unimpressive opposition) Illinois (squeaking past Kent St and Tulsa to take the South Padre Island Invitational not particularly impressive; modest wins at Vanderbilt and at home against Georgia; lost to Clemson at home) Michigan (win at home over Duke tempered by loss to Duke in NY; loss at UMD and overtime home scare vs. Savannah St do not look good) Marquette (convincing loss to Dayton in Chicago; close win over Wisconsin at home) Miami (losses to Ohio St at home and UConn in the Paradise Jam; win over Kentucky at Rupp not so impressive -- see VMI) Purdue (lost big to Duke at home and to Oklahoma in NY; best win is over BC in NY) Florida (squeaked by Washington but lost to Syracuse in Kansas City; close loss at Florida St.) WVU (beat Iowa but lost to Kentucky in the Las Vegas Invitational; barely won at Ole Miss) Kansas (loss is to Syracuse but played in Kansas City; no significant wins -- best may be over Washington, also in Kansas City) UMD (win over Michigan St followed by big losses to Gonzaga and GU; win over Michigan at home; survived in OT at home against Vermont) Wisconsin (losses are vs UConn and at Marquette; won at Virginia Tech; barely squeaked by Iona) UCLA (close losses to Michigan in NY and at Texas; hasn't played anyone else of significance) WaSU (lost to Pitt in NJ and to Baylor at home; no victories of note) St Mary's (beat Providence but lost to UTEP in Anaheim) Texas A&M (lost to Tulsa close to home; comeback, one-point win at home over Arizona not particularly impressive) Houston (season-opening close loss in NC was, unfortunately, to Georgia Southern; best win is over Western Kentucky at home) Michigan St (big loss to UMD enough to make them questionable for the top 25; huge loss at home to UNC makes it obvious they were overrated to begin with) Louisville (trounced by W Ky on neutral court; no significant wins) Utah (laughable; best win is at Missouri St; lost at Idaho St and at home to Southwest Baptist (non-Div I))
UNDEFEATED GETTING NO VOTES IN EITHER POLL: Stanford (very unimpressive opposition) Illinois St (very unimpressive opposition)

Interesting. Is there popular board support to bring back the hoyatalk rankings? I thought those were fun.

I'm willing to tabulate the results again, if people are still interested.
