I know I should be grateful the Hoyas are getting any coverage at all. ESPN Full Court or whatever. But Dana Barros has to be one of the most superfluous color commentators I've had the misfortune to endure. Besides being a homer, he was just plain inane for the duration of the BC game. I mean good college bball color men are rare (anyone want to speak up for Dickie ACC or Billy Packer? I didn't think so.). But geez, with the cliches coming at this sort of clip, i think Dana may soon need a post-NBA Plan B.
Some nuggets-- After a Craig Smith jumper: "Nice touch...for a big man" More than once: "Georgetown just has to score some points." And let's not forget Barros on Barros, re his BC points record: "Records are made to be broken."
And, as DFW pointed out in Hoyachat, don't get me started on the sideline reporter.

i posted this on the other site...barros obviously didnt do his homework on the hoyas...he kept talking about how shocked he was that the hoyas held the ball for so long on offensive and that they had green and hibbert catch the ball at the top of the arc....i mean those two things are staples of the hoyas offense this year...
barros is awful

Yeah, that guy belonged in a toolbag.
He was hopeless.
I don't think he looked at G'town for a minute before coming into the game. Or at the very least, he knew [nothing] about the Princeton offense.
"I'm amazed they are shooting all these 3's at this point in the game"...THAT'S THEIR OFFENSE, IMBECILE, THEY'VE DONE THAT (for better or worse) ALL GODDAMN YEAR!
It was insulting to listen to his inane babble about the Hoyas. He had nothing to say.
Even his keys to the game sucked. HOW CAN YOU MESS THAT UP!? The most important thing to him at the beginning of the game was the BC crowd...what the hell?
He's the absolute worst. You can't even begin to imagine how relieved I was to hear my buddy Dickie V afterwards.

The announcing crew was Eric Frede (voice of BC football), Dana Barros, and NESN's Jayme Parker on the sidelines. (The only thing missing was maroon and gold blazers for the crew.) Even though it's a regional telecast, you expect a little more out of ESPN for a top 10 team.
Barros' knowledge of the Georgetown offense was poor, a given. And I'm sure Parker is a fine reporter but here halftime question to Coach Thompson bordered on the bizarre: she asked Thompson to the effect if he was happy the Hoya defense had held BC to 24 points.

Had no idea about Frede. Geez.

I have to think it was an audition for Barros, I can't imagine they would use him again, it was embarassing.

Frede is also NESN's "in the stands" guy for Red Sox games. (And he's a wiz at interviewing the "fan of the game"...) This crew definitely had a "stringer" feel to it ... Parker fumbled a few times and Barros made me uncomfortable from the get-go. I had a fleeting hope that ESPN might send Billy Raf up for this game. Alas, it was the C team. If I was a BC fan, I'd wonder if my squad was getting the proper respect from the networks as the #8 (undefeated, no less) team in the country. Maybe it was the snow...

C Team? That's insulting to the C Team!! ;D
Seriously, they were worse than the Fox Football crew for the annual Lions/Cardinals tilt. Dana Barros gave the most un-professional performance I have seen across any sport -- football, basketball, baseball, etc. ESPN should be thoroughly embarrassed by their programming last night.
I know many are not a fan of Vitale, but I would take him six days a week and twice for a Hoyas basketball game over that "commentary" we were given yesterday.

Check the Boston Herald BC notes (linked in the Game Articles thread). This was Barros' first game.

Barros was awful, not in a biased way, but in a I can't announce way.
Still, we didn't do anything to shut them up.

Is that who that was? Wow was he bad.
Does ESPN really even have any say in who does these games? I feel like they just slap the "ESPN" name on it and throw some production money around, then hire a bunch of bums to do games according to the most convenient way possible.
Don Criqui and Wenzel were already doing SJU-SHU, so they were taken. Or maybe it was Rutgers-Nova. I forget.
Also, now that I think about I don't think that was even ESPN-plus. Wasn't it just "Big East" TV?
