It's Russian for "Venson". Leading nominee for most subtle but most hilarious line ever on HoyaTalk.

Mescheriakov is his name in Russian. Meshcharakou is his name in Belorussian. Its the same kind of thing with Wladimir Klitschko (Russian) and his Ukranian name which is Volodymyr Klychko.

Any time you're rendering a language with non-Roman script into Roman letters, you'll have issues with sounds that don't have clear equivalents in our 26-letter alphabet. So there will be variations in the transliteration. The only "correct" way to spell Nikita's name is (I'm guessing here) [edit: OK so it doesn't display Cyrillic properly. So much for my educational post...]

Shouldn't this thread be on the FLL/Linguistics board?

SDHoya nails it - differences between Russian and Belorussian. That also explains the deal with his brother and Yegor vs. Yahor.

Yeah, I'm with lic here...what is with Venson? Also, why can't Georgetown get one spelling of Nikita's name out there and make sure that everyone uses it? Seems that Meshcharakou would be most appropriate, and it comes with the added benefit of getting dirty Russky influence off of our basketball team--gotta preserve those precious bodily fluids!

Bubbrubb -
Michael Tate was HS Class of 89 recruit that was our most heralded recruit the year after 'Zo came in. After freshman year I believe, last name became Venson (he may have even hyphenated it as Tate-Venson for a bit. Transferred after soph year I believe - totally working off memory though, so Hoya hoop history scholars should correct me if I'm wrong.
