I know that Florida State tends to take a lot of heat on this board (not undeservedly), particularly from one who shall go nameless. However, I read a story the other day about how one of FSU's football players is likely to miss their game next Saturday -- because he has his Rhodes Scholarship interview that day. At the time I read the story, the game time for this week's game had not been set (I assume it now has). FSU has given the player permission to miss the game, and was hoping that the game would be a night game, because in that case it would make every effort (and was hoping for cooperation from the NCAA) to get the player to the game in time for the second half.
At least in this case, FSU is doing the right thing. Props to the kid and to the school.

Still filthy. I like Myron Rolle. I like Emeka Okafor too for example. They do not absolve their programs of paying players not to get degrees.
It's not what you do with the great, talented, smart, motivated kids on scholarship. I can coach them. It's what you do with the lost, scared, wants to do good but doesn't know how kids. Bowden just wants them to play fuh-bawl. Bowden doesn't deserve Rolle.

Finally, after likely a thousand kids have gone through Bowden's system, he has another one to brag about besides maybe Warrick Dunn? Not really the ratio you're looking for in 500:1....

Obviously, I am the one "going nameless," but I concur 100%. I will not take anything away from the good apples. And by all accounts, Myron Rolle is a good apple. I liked the reference to Warrick Dunn as well. As much as I hated him on that fateful 3rd and 10 in November, 1993 at the Swamp, I still commend him as a player and more importantly as a person. Hats off to him and to Rolle as well.

Yes, hifi, you are correct! I hope that Rolle and Warrick Dunn aren't the only class acts to come out of the FSU football program. What about Burt Reynolds and Ron Simmons? ;D

Charlie Ward, Brad Johnson, Peter Boulware, Derrick Brooks to name a few. Compared to some other schools there alumni base is actually pretty impressive

Every program has good people and some bad apples. Difference between programs is how you handle the bad apples and make certain you don't get too many--who can influence more people on team or make it an uncomfortable atmosphere.
It's up to coaches to handle situations and do so in a manor that shows rest of team that decisions are fair--and handled in a manner that discourages others from doing same behavior and knowing if they do--they will be punished--star player or not.

They are showing a little piece on Rolle during the GT/Miami game right now. This kid is crazy good at...everything. what a great kid. he seems to be the epitome of Big John's philosophy- use your'e athletic abilities to get a great education and take advantage of every opportunity at the school because they are doing that with your athletic abilities.

For what it's worth, even down here in the Gator Nation and during game week with the hated FSU, no one has anything bad to say about this kid. He is being commended and as well he should. I heard that Florida has only had one Rhodes Scholar student-athlete. And that's not said to knock Florida but to point out just how prestigious an award, and more importantly how difficult it is to maintain the academic requirements while still satisfying all the practice, weight room, film time, travel time etc... that is required to compete athletically at this level. Hats off to this guy for sure.
