In light of comments from Sarah Palin and Nancy Pfotenhauer, I wanted to try and hash out whether the Republican party believes that "liberal elites" (term now broadly used to define any Democrat) are not worthy of being considered real Americans. Here are videos of the comments for those of you that missed them.
(clip from from Silly O'Reilly's half hour of ranting)
I especially enjoyed the comments about "real" Virginia. I was trying to remember what happened to the last Republican candidate that tried to split the electorate of Virginia with the term "real Virginia".... Oh yes! Now I remember...
My message to McCain/Palin- please keep this divisive rhetoric going! Independents and moderate Republicans in "fake", excuse me, Northern Virginia (think Fairfax, Loudoun Counties) love to hear how they aren't really Virginians or pro-American.

You are correct. As a Republican, I do not believe "liberal elites" are real Americans. Do you feel like a better person now?

Not to sell you out TBird, but we've met...in San Francisco, no less...and I watched you imbibe a selection of microbrews and california vinos, while munching on organic grass fed burgers. You, my friend, are tainted by elitism. It's in you now.

There is no argument: residents of Northern Virginia are not real Virginian, they are immigrants from the elite east (or west) coast. It's easy to identify these non-Virginian by the athletic jerseys they wear (Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, 49ers, Giants, Patriots, etc.). They should all be burned at the stake the day before the election with John Madden offering commentary.

Just curious--I'm going to be in Pro America parts of America on election day, so I should be able avoid your death squads (though I'm not sure I'm agaisnt them. I am pro burning Yankee, Red Sox, Giants and Patriots fans and I don't have a huge problem with burning Dodgers and 49ers fans)

A North Carolina congressman locked in a tight re-election race admitted Tuesday to recently telling a crowd of John McCain supporters that "liberals hate real Americans," the latest in a string of comments from Republicans that appear to question Democrats' patriotism.
Rep. Robin Hayes, a five-term Republican who has been heavily targeted by Democrats this election cycle, first denied making the remarks, but conceded Monday afternoon that he was accurately quoted.
Hayes said, "Liberals hate real Americans that work and achieve and believe in God."
Apparently Liberals don't work or achieve or believe in God. He may be regretting he said it (or was caught saying it), but that is exactly what so many of the extreme right, White Christian base believes. Truly disgraceful. We will see how all this plays across the country on Nov. 4th.

Maybe those liberals are just self-loathing? That's possible.

We will see how all this plays across the country on Nov. 4th. It's idiotic hyperbole, though I don't know that you can/should hold it against every other candidate in the party. There are a lot of republicans who DO feel that way, and now that they're losing in a lot of polls it's really starting to come out. Of course, there are a lot of other republicans who'd denounce that statement too. If there's justice though, Hayes will lose as will the lady from up in Minnesota who was on Hardball the other day. As will Sarah Palin, frankly.

I'll take this video, feel better about what this country might potentially look like in two weeks, and move on with my night.

As a Virginia-bred Virginian, I welcome our elitist out-of-state overlords! PS, I would also welcome another NFL franchise.

Not to split hairs, but by Giants do you mean San Francisco Baseball Giants or New York Football Giants? Because my cozy apartment in Arlington which houses three registered Democrats voting for Obama on Nov. 4 has fans of both. And yes, we are transplants from California, New York, and Massachusetts, and I think that's a good thing. ;D

Woot woot to the transplants from Cali voting in Elite East Coast Elite districts for Obama! In my residences in the last five years: fans of the NY Football Giants, Notre Dame, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Angels, baseball Cardinals, football Rams, Lakers, 49ers, Patriots, Redskins, Ravens, Seahawks, Bears, Cubs, Nationals, Mariners, UW Huskies, and best of all... the HOYAS. All proudly pulling the level for O this year (and one dude who I'm pretty sure is mailing it in from Burkina Fasso). Strength in diversity!
Does that make us ..... elite bi-coastal elites?
As for "real america" versus "fake america", this debate has been going on since the Adams-Jefferson race of 1800. Has anyone ever won anything other than a divided electorate by using this tactic? As someone who has lived and worked in many places around this country, it's all real, though I do find incredible ignorance from people in cities, rural communities, coasts, and inland who have never traveled out of their bubble and only think "their" American is the real deal. Happens in NYC, WY, AK, So Cal, and Texas. The problem isn't politics, it's willful ignorance of the way other people live and failing to see the value of other ways of living. You know, the same kind of stuff that leads to war, ethnic conflict, fascism, and that kind of thing.
Ed, what's wrong with the 9ers, man?? Don't kick a team when they're down! Also, no problem with the Angels? I guess they do come from uber-Repub O.C.

Also, there are hardly any states in the nation that are homogenous, on way or the other. Even in 2000 and 2004, when we have very divided electorates, the red-state-blue-state maps, once adjusted for population and "purpling", look pretty heterogenous politically. Have a look at the progression of maps on this site: www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/ ,especially this one: www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/countycartlinearlarge.png . It's amazing how, at the bottom maps, things look pretty purple, with only pockets or blue and red.
