Probably the second five on this team could run the 72-73 team off the floor. it's just a different era. That said, big Merlin is still one of my all-time favorite hoyas. I also think he meant that this team has less talent relative to the rest of the NCAA than his teams had, relative to their contemporaries ... as baseball nerds know, the only way to compare teams/players from different eras is by comparing them to their peers ...

“...Don't want to give Calhoun and Boeheim any bulletin board fodder.”
I think that piece of advice is very pertinent at this stage of the season. Especially, with both the UConn and Nova games still to be played. It was a good article. Does anyone know where he sits? I look for him during the games, but never see him. I did think that photo of him in the shadows was nice.

People, we had this discussion on this forum over a month ago. JT went on his radio show after the Temple loss and immediately started talking up how bad this current Hoya team was. Said it was worse than the first team he had at GU which was nuts. Indicated it was worse than the last few Hoya teams he had before he retired but if I remember correctly those teams were full of average players who didn't have the potential or raw ability of a Green or a Bowman. They didn't have shooters as accurate as Cook and Wallace. And there wasn't one player on those last JT teams that were as long and skilled as DJ. JT should have never made such comments and THESE current players are making him eat his words. I know JT was trying to shield his son from any potential criticism if the losing kept going but delecting blame towards a bunch of college kids who are from all reports are decent people was inexcusable. Also JT without fail likes to give coaches all the glory when their teams win but if the team isn't any good its always the players' fault. You know even if the players were as bad as he made them out to be why did he have to go on radio and talk bad about them? This is a man who routinely yaps about not putting your dirty laundry out there for people to see and this is a man who preaches about loyalty. And yet there he was hanging this current crop of players out there to dry. Tacky.
I respect JT but I hope if the team continues to do well he will simply remain silent about it. He's already said more than enough. If he is to talk then for once he should praise the players and give them more credit for how the season is shaping up rather than just heaping piles of praise on his son. His son is a heck of a coach but these players are pretty good themselves. When you consider how much better coached they are than JT's last few teams its no surprise they are exceeding the fans and the media's expectations.

When G'town beat Notre Dame at the end of the game, they showed camera shot of JT2 standing in the press box, up top, with a little smile on his face. For the St. John's game, he was in the press box, up top, sitting and chewing gum.

MCIGuy, great post. I can't or substract anything from it, but I totally agree. If I were JTII (a legendary coach who is now a media personality who happens to have a son who coaches at his former program, as if you guys didn't know) I would take this approach to comments about Georgetown basketball: NEVER, EVER compare myself to my son in any way, including comparisons between his teams and his son's teams. It just inevitably puts more unnecessary pressure on III.

I missed the ND shot of him; I guess it was all the jumping up and down, feeling like it was the 80's again. Man, what a game. I was right behind the ND bench (next to their coaches wife) and man did it get real quite, real quick, after their 3pt lead take shot. "What...what...no it cannot be!” their eyes screamed. I think I saw tears, but I didn't bother looking to closely.
