Both sets were equal length, it is just the encore where one band gets featured more than the other.

Vampire Weekend = Awesome! Short, but awesome!
(Hell, they were so good, I barely noticed the thousands of hipster d-bags surrounding me.)
Unfortunately, I didn't get home from work in time to see The Teenagers open for them. I was a little underwhelmed by The Teenagers debut album (except the outstanding single 'Starlett Johanssen'), but I've heard they are quite the showmen live.
So, Vampire Weekend, I say to you....excellent show! Now get back in the studio and work on that follow-up album. From the couple new singles you played last night -- which I assume will be on the album -- it sounds like it will be frakkin' outstanding!

My bro went to the same show in DC. I'm going to the show here in NY on Sat.

They are playing as part of WFNX Holiday Show here on Sunday- I am flying back from DC Sunday afternoon, it will be a game time decision whether to try to get into the Orpheum, but this review is encouraging. Anyone seen the Black Kids? They are the co-headliners.

I missed Black Kids when they came to the Black Cat a few weeks ago, but I love their music.
Nothing groundbreaking, just good quality, upbeat dance pop.

Sounds like every music reviewer I've ever read. ;D
I like Pitchfork alright, it's a great source to learn a lot about new bands, I think they just go out of their way to be overly harsh in a lot of cases.
I find Spin to be pretty consistent, most of the time. And I like NME in the UK.
Of course Rolling Stone is the absolute worst, but I don't think I'm saying anything everyone didn't already know. They are the ultimate slurpers of the flavor of the month.

I finally got around to downloading Vampire Weekend, and was surprised - this is what everyone is gaga over? That probably reads a lot more negative than I am about it - it's a catchy album and very listenable and I'm not disappointed I spent $4 on it, but I hadn't listened to any of the tracks beforehand, and was a little shocked that it was Paul Simon's Graceland with English major lyrics and without any good basslines or horns.

It's not an unfair assessment you're making (and others have said the same), though I would compare Vampire Weekend more to The Rhythm of the Saints than Graceland. Besides, I'll take keyboards over horns any day, unless we're talking about Oingo Boingo.

Nobody is saying its mindblowingly original, just saying its great pop music and a great show.

The keyboards don't bug me, but I'd much rather horns than the fake baroquish-harp they have on a lot of the tracks. I don't know why, but that really puts them into the "concept" category for me - it's like they overthought it and were intentionally pushing the we hate colonialism/Holden Caulfield thing they are going for even in the background track selection.
I got Day & Age too and like that a lot more. Digital delay was the best musical innovation of the last 20 years.

D&A is good - I am listening to it right now - but I felt it drops off precipitously as I got into the deeper cuts...as do most albums. I'm listening to it and two other albums a lot recently -- MGMT's Oracular Spectacular and Vampire Weekend. By the end of all the ablums, I find myself wondering why I thought it was awesome; that is until I restart it and listen to those first few tracks again - then I remember. Anyways, while I see your point, I'd rank them like this: Vampire Weekend, Oracular Spectacular and Day & Age, but I can easily see how others would flip that order.

Thanks for the posts here - I don't really have much time to keep up on new stuff out there. I am going to be checking out each of these. (To be honest, I was not all that thrilled with the Hold Steady. I guess have to give them another listen).

I cant stand Vampire Weekend. Not so much for the music, but the lyrics. I cant get through the post-post-modern kitschy self-ironic "we're rich, Editedy, and we love it" shtick. I can see that the music is good pop stuff with a kind of decent attempt at incorporating world beats and influences. To me it seems like Gossip Girl turned into music.
I love Day and Age though. I havent bought it (yet) and have been listening to it on youtube (on what is a surprisingly high quality up load of all the tracks). Cam, does your copy have the bonus tracks on it? i think they are pretty good and really help the end of the album live up to the beginning. All the songs sound similar but they are all good, unlike say a Korn album where all the songs sound the same but are horrible. My favorite tracks are "This Is Your Life", "Joy Ride", and "Forget About What I Said" [which is a bonus track from itunes]

I am considering catching Gogol Bordello at 9:30 after the Pitt game on Jan. 3. Any comments?
ON EDIT: Should we have a separate album thread? Just putting it out there...
And sorry Boz, but Spin magazine has been dead for years.

That's crazy talk, Austin. I don't respond to crazy talk.
(who am I kidding, of course I do).
Spin is still an very good source for alternative music. Spin cares not for the mainstream (for the most part), nor do I.
The Web site kinda sucks though, I'll give you that. It used to be much better before they re-designed it about a year ago.

At least you guys are consistent... was looking up MGMT on iTunes and saw that Day & Age and Vampire Weekend were the first two listed under "Listeners Also Bought." I am liking Vampire Weekend. Not sold on Day & Age yet; it frequently borders on elevator music.

Has anyone seen Oasis on their current tour?
I wasn't able to go on Saturday, and I really wanted to. I've heard mixed reviews of their performance, from "very, very good" to "meh, it was OK."
I am a big fan of their new album. There are a couple of tracks on it that are Definitely Maybe-quality (though it's not at that high quality from beginning to end). It's certainly better than anything they've done in a long time (I thought their last album was OK, but I think I'm the only one who liked it).
Be interested to hear any reviews of the Brothers Gallagher from anyone who has seen them this time around.
Bonus for any stories of them kicking, punching or spitting at each other (or the crowd) and/or ripping into Jay-Z or Radiohead in between songs.
Yes, they are a-holes, but they're my kind of a-holes. And they make really good music.
