Bite me. ;D (they've had some good songs since Morning Glory, but this is the first time they've really had a good album since Morning Glory).

Boz, from all that you've said here, you are at most 5 years older than me. Trust me, we'll be in the retirement home together. I have heard Oasis since Morning Glory, but I have to say that I really haven't been a fan. My new obsession will be trying to catch a Mates of State show.

That takes me back to the summer after I graduated from Georgetown and the next autumn. I saw them in concert sometime that year or in spring of the next year in Boston. Way to go in the way back machine to make fun of Boz about being old.

Mates of State are very cool.
I'll always be a fan of the Team Boo stuff they did, but I think I like the new album even more with them toning down the twee just a notch.
Haven't been able to catch them live though...unless of course you count the Cingular commercial they did a couple years back.

It was little too, hmm, shrill I think for my taste back on Team Boo. Recent stuff seems a little more in my wheelhouse. For my money though, I prefer the New Pornographers and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for that sound. Both put on a great show.

Wow, it's like hipster d-bag central around here!
;D
CYHSY needs a good comeback album. Some Loud Thunder was a bit of a disappointment, save a couple of really good tracks.
New Pornographers....just keep doin' what you're doin'. They never fail to impress. _______________________________________
So here's a question for the music enthusiasts:
Rilo Kiley: chick band or not chick band?
I go with not chick band, despite the fact that their songs are featured regularly on Gray's Anatomy.
As for how I define the term, let me put it this way....
Coldplay = chick band Radiohead = not chick band
(I'm sure I have offended several someones here; it's all in fun).

Doesn't mean I don't own Initial Friends, Take Offs and Execution of All Things, but I know its a chick band. Incidently I agree with your assessment vis a vis Cold Play and Radiohead, and again I say that while still owning all Cold Play albums and loving an occasional track. As with all genres, there is a time and a place for chick bands.

I referred to elevator music earlier in the thread -- to me, Cold Play is the ultimate elevator music band.
And I won't even start journeying on the way back machine, since I would make Boz look like an infant.

I'm also gonna say Metric = not chick band. Mmmmmm..... Emily Haines. I have an ongoing discussion with a friend of mine in a band on who is more sultry, Emily Haines or Shirley Manson. Despite my thing for gingers, Emily almost always wins that argument.

On the plus side, since there is really nothing good to talk about on that "other" board......
The Killers kicked ass tonite.
And M83 is VERY good live. Good blend of shoegaze & new wave. Nice work, Frenchies!

I am not a big fan of cover songs (particularly covers of my more favorite bands), I can't think of more than a few that I like better than the originals, but The Killers' cover of Joy Division's 'Shadowplay' is truly outstanding.
That was the highlight of the show for me. They really make that song their own (and, as a Joy Division devotee, obviously I was thrilled with the film clips from 'Control' that they showed during the performance).

That's awesome, Boz. Not to highjack the thread, but I just saw Control for the first time (on Cable) the other night. That dude's resemblance to Ian Curtis is uncanny. Good flick.

So, the "Lost" thread has gotten me back into reading the board every couple days again, and I just found this thread and decided to read through it. I don't go to many concerts in general because I don't particularly listen to the radio all that much and therefore am not up on what's being put out by who (I'm not anti-mainstream, I just really really like my iPod's mix of British rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today), so I don't have much to contribute to this thread, but I thought I'd chime in anyway because why not?
Boz, I saw Oasis when they were in Camden a week before Christmas. Oasis is far and away my favorite band, and it was my second time seeing them (saw them in '05 with Jet; had tickets in '02 when a car accident canceled a few shows, Philadelphia included). I thought the performance was phenomenal. I brought someone with me who wasn't a fan but liked going to concerts; he left very, very impressed with the Gallaghers.
The best anecdote of the night was when Noel said, "I can't tell you how happy we are to be in the murder capital of the world." I don't know if he was talking about Philadelphia or Camden, but either probably works. Then he says, "Statistically speaking, some of you aren't going to leave here alive. ::boo:: Hey, hey, I don't make the statistics." Later, he asked, "So, has anybody been murdered yet?" I found this hilarious, but this probably says more about me than it does him.
As for the new album, I thought the first half was great while the second half was weak. After hearing some of the tracks live, though, it grew on me a little more. It's certainly got some different sounds than in the past, but they can't all be "Definitely Maybe" and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" (which, by the way, is my favorite album ever).
Finally, I liked "Don't Believe the Truth." So maybe that makes two of us.

Kahil El'Zabar(percussion, African thumb piano), Corey Wilkes(trumpet, flugelhorn), Ernest Dawkins(tenor & alto) at An Die Musik in Baltimore. Because I realize that probably 95+% of board readers have no idea who these musicians are, and have little interest in this type of music, I will not bore you with details. Suffice it to say that it was one of the most enjoyable musical experiences of my life, and one of the things I have done with my life is hear live music.

Ozomatli at 9:30 last night. Very fun show. They are a latin, jazz-ish band and are good performers. They had one of the guys from Jurassic 5 with them last night - the one with the deep voice, can't remember his name right now. They are from LA and come around DC once or twice a year. Playing somewhere in Baltimore tonight.
