So this must be the quiet before the storm ... so little action here on Hoya talk. With that, I had a question about campus life and the players. I know classes have started, I take it the freshman are acclimating themselves to college life, and I imagine that some of you on this board have had a chance to meet and greet some of the fellas. I have a few questions. Do the guys seem to be enjoying themselves and bonding with a team? What's the feeling out there? Are they excited for the season? Are they hanging in the cafeteria... are they fairly social?
Back in the day, (1982-86), the fellas were totally accessible to everyone. As a 12 year old kid I used to visit my brother at the hilltop and i'd literally spend the day hanging with Wingate, Jackson, Horace, Victor Morris, David Dunn, Gene Smith, Billy Martin and others. They were the nicest guys... would invite me to lunch... shoot hoops, i sit in on classes with them (went to Father McSorley's War & Peace with Patrick) etc..
I am imagine now things have changed and that the players might not be as outwardly accessible as they were in the past. With all the media exposure...they must be treated more like celebrities. Is this the case... or is it still a small school feel where players and the rest of the student body still intermix?

I can't speak for the current freshmen, but having graduated from the Hilltop a couple years ago, I can say that during my time, there was definitely some small school feel where the players and the rest of the students intermixed a good amount. It was common to see players while walking to class, in the cafeteria, hanging out at Tombs, at rooftop parties, etc. The students look up to the players, for sure, and maybe ask for pictures sometimes, but overall I think they are still thought of as part of the general student population, which is nice to see.

I guess it hasn't changed much in 45 years. In my days the team was just part of us. I remember walking the streets of Boston after a loss to the traitors with the coach and the many of the team members.

Even that is pretty rare, the only player I can remember that happening with is Jeff after the Final Four

I would say, other than being very tall, the players act EXACTLY like any other student. They have friends who arent bball players, but if i went up to one of them and just started acting buddy buddy with them they would look at me like any of you would, "who the hell is this kid, i dont know him." they would more than likely be cordial as any one else would. That people know who the guys are are before they are ever introduced would be the only way they are different. The exception would be during the first few weekends of class where freshman have a tendancy to go crazy when seeing any of the players, but they calm down eventually. Basically they are as accessible and equally as inaccessible as any other student, just that every one knows their name.
As to how the freshman are; well i havent seen any moping around reading sartre or asking around about where to find transfer papers. but other than that who knows? im not their friend, so i couldnt say.

In '88-'89 lived across from Tilmon and Bryant in Village A and a few doors down from Dikembe. "Accessability" was never a problem as far as I could tell, especially if you happened to be female.

the freshman are definitely a regular part of the student body and are bonding with their temmates. i've seen the freshman together in leo's sitting with other students, and i've seen the freshman with jeff and pat at rhino - nice to see the older guys hanging out with the younger ones. plus i'd see the current and incoming players together all the time over the summer.

is anyone else disturbed that any student, student-athlete or alum is hanging out at rhinos? in other news ... thank god the new Champs has risen from the ashes-right at the very spot where it once stood. i now have a new reason to go to georgetown after dark!

I think the team had some kind of Crab feast over the weekend.
Some of the older guys have taken some of the younger guys under their wing. One realtionship I know of is Jeff Green taking Jason Clark out around Georgetown over the summer.

i feel like everybody hangs out with each other except for Bryon Jansen and Nikita. Those two hang out together but are never with the other guys.

I don't think that's true I see bryon and nikita hanging out with the other guys fairly often. Ran into jessie and bryon at philly p's just last weekend.

Jahidi was on my floor in Copley eons ago. His vote for what magazines we subscribed to was the same as any other and he showed up for the first RA meeting, to.
This thread has major creepy potential.

You mean Jahidi and Brendan? Except that Brendan actually lived in an off-campus apartment.

You mean Jahidi and Brendan? Except that Brendan actually lived in an off-campus apartment. 1996-97, they lived on the third floor of Copley.
