Eco is a fantastic writer. I remember when the hype for DaVinci Code was in full swing, lots of people were trying to convince me to read it. Once I read a plot synopsis, I had no interest -- I had already read Foucault's Pendulum and I assume it was a lot better.

I was living in France when I read Foucault's Pendulum. During one weekend in that year, I remember visiting my godfather, a Swissman, who lived outside Paris, near Versailles actually, and I asked him if he was a mason, and him responding that there was no correct way to answer that, with a grin on his face. He was a mysterious man to begin with, so it was the perfect way to answer a curious seventeen year old. Sadly, he died a few years later of cancer, but to this day I'm still not sure how to interpret his answer.

Attention! This late word on voting for President. Because of the very large turnout expected, election officials have changed the voting times. All Republicans are to vote on Tuesday while Democrats are to vote on Wednesday. We have been assured this will be strictly enforced by all means possible.

Wasn't that an actual radio or viral internet ad? Pretty funny in hoyatalkland, but pretty nasty in real life.

Usually this appears in the form of a flyer that has been photoshopped to appear official- with the state/county seal, etc. These flyers tend to turn up in poor, African-American communities. It's just sad- I don't think this blatent voter suppression is being coordinated by the official Republican Party, but it stinks that there are members of the extreme right that even consider such a horrible act. In terms of Ed's post, I assume it's just a misguided attempt at making a joke.

For those who have trouble spotting a joke, another announcement has been made: all Democrats showing up on Wednesday to vote are subject to DNA-testing to determine if they are humanoid. Those determined to be of other species will be tarred and feathered, assuming they are not already feathered. Stay tuned for further announcements. In terms of photoshopped flyers being aimed at predominantly African-Americans that is pure bullcrap. And, through what logic do you assign responsibility for this made-up accusation to some persons in the "extreme right"? As for voter intimidation, there have now been three members of my immediate family, all in different locations, who have had their McCain-Palin signs stolen from their yards; and, another family member who was called a racist bitch for having a McCain-Palin sticker on her car. That's four member of my family who have been "intimidated" in one form or another. And that's real, not some made-up reference to photoshopped "official announcements". Should I assign what's happened to my family to some "left-wing extremists"?

No, this is actual news from a couple weeks ago. I'm sure it was liberal Democrats that composed it too I'm sorry to hear about your family being "intimidated" by their signs being stolen. The "racist" remark is unacceptable, but these are not going to actually prevent the people you mentioned from voting. Do you feel like an a$$ yet?

I see nothing in your post that ties these fake announcements to any from the right wing nor anything that says it's being distributed to mostly African-American neighborhoods.

I see nothing in your post that ties these fake announcements to any from the right wing nor anything that says it's being distributed to mostly African-American neighborhoods. Go do a simple google search on Hampton Roads, VA and you can figure out what the demographics are there. Just out of curiosity, who do you think put out this flyer?

FWIW, my opinion of that flyer is that whoever put it out there should be prosecuted in accordance with Virginia state law. Assuming they can find out who did it, that is. And assuming they are found guilty, they should receive whatever maximum sentence the state law allows.
Whoever is oblivious enough to believe such a ridiculous thing, well they've got a different problem altogether. As Ron White (the only one of those "Blue Collar" guys I think is actually funny) says, "You can't fix stupid."

And assuming they are found guilty, they should receive whatever maximum sentence the state law allows. Well, they caught the culprits but will not be prosecuting them for "Providing False Information to a Voter" .. a class I misdemeanor in the Commonwealth. hamptonroads.com/2008/11/officials-find-source-fake-election-flier-wont-press-chargesThe defense would have too easy a time, claiming their client was singled out for prosecution when neither Obama nor McCain nor their respective cronies have been charged. As for fixing stupid, I've got a hard time figuring who is more gullible- someone mistakenly thinking Obama is an Arab, or falling for an "electorial" notice like this one. Edit- Added link to updated story.
