Late last night it was announced that the popular sports radio talk show on WFAN would break up... Being from the NYC area I don't know if you guys got the chance to listen to them alot but there definitely going to be missed. They didn't talk alot about georgetown hoops, but in the past few years as we got better, around tournament time they did.. I always thought it was awesome when they'd mention us over uconn cause thats all you here out here!!! Anyways from reading the boards i think were going to have a young exciting team cant wait for this year!

Yeah, also from the area, I agree. I love Mike and Mike on ESPN, but Mike and the Mad Dog were very solid also. It's rare that commentators and talkshow people don't bother me, and they certainly did not.

It's hard to believe they're breaking up. They've been together forever. I guess Chris Russo is heading over To Sirius Radio. I can't imagine he'd get nearly the market he has now over there.

I agree russo was on the phone with mike today saying goodbye and he was like tearing up and crying.. I listened to those guys when they started in 1988 i was like in 6th grade.. So its totally like an end to an area.. I figured most wouldnt care on the site not being from the area but it is about sports so i figured id mention it..

I also grew up listening to them and am sad about the news - they were an institution for any sports fan from NY. I'm still kind of in shock that it's over.

I've never really been a big fan of the show. I know a lot of people in the area listen to them, but I never liked them much. My main issue with them was that they almost NEVER talked about basketball. From the first day of spring training through the end of the world series, all these guys EVER wanted to talk about was baseball. And the topics were ridiculous, I have no idea how anybody could care that much about the minutia of the game. And from November to March, what was their favorite topic? STILL BASEBALL! Analyzing what kind of moves the Mets were going to make, talks from the owners meetings, all sorts of crap like that. Plus a decent helping of Jets and Giants as well, but still. Neither guy knows much about college sports and neither are big basketball fans, and the ridiculous attention to baseball detail just never did it for me.
The one redeeming characteristic of the duo was that they always had the balls to rip coaches or management when they screwed up, even if they were on the phone with them. I liked that, they had an attitude and edginess that was distinctly New York, and not many people have the guts to do that. They were sort of a voice for disgruntled New York sports fans in that way. But outside of them occasionally tearing Steve Phillips (or somebody like that) a new one, was never a huge fan of the program.
Are they gonna put somebody else opposite Francessa now?

Actually, Francesa is quite knowledgeable regarding college sports and pro football, in particular. I know that before WFAN he was a researcher for CBS Sports, concentrating on college sports and served for a time as a studio analyst for college basketball and football. And, of course, he did the Around the NFL show w/Bill Parcells, too. I think a version of the show – without Parcells -- is currently nationally syndicated on radio every Sunday. I generally have appreciated Mike, though his analysis often has a NY bias. But that’s the audience he’s preaching to, so I understand where he’s coming from.
Russo, on the other hand, has never been one of my favorites. To me he’s all shtick, all the time. Francesca dwarfs him when it comes to real sports insight and understanding. Mad Dog’s value was his manic on-air presence, which was entirely lost on me as a listener. Obviously lots of NYC area folks liked it, though, ‘cause the team had a long term run. We’ll see how Russo fares on Sirius XM.

RBhoya all good points, i listened everyday for 19 years and yeah since jordan retired and that basketball area ended they really dont talk about basketball.. Plus with the knicks being a joke and there hatered for then coach isaiah thomas further contributed to the lack of hoops talk.. AvantGuardhoya is 100% right francesa did work for cbs and does know aot about college hoops in general, though they doint talk about it until march madness.. He is personal frineds with alot of coachs like rick mageras, and calaperi so i never felt shorted on insight.. Francesa saws hell never have another partner but does want regulars to come on to help with segments of the show.. Should be intresting how it all plays out..

Now where will I get those oh so necessary updates on Chris' tennis matches or the movies he's enjoyed. He was always a gong booming signifying nothing.

Anyone who can celebrate Yankee Elimination Day with the sheer joy the Dog brought to it while simulcasting on the YES Network (Al Yankzeera) has earned my unending gratitude. I don't think he will do very well on his own at XM/Sirius, but Mike and the Mad Dog were a great combination and blow the average sports radio show out of the water- they are certainly light years ahead of anything we have in Boston or anything I can recall on 980 in DC. This profile from four years ago in The New Yorker is a fascinating look at what made them great, but also what likely led to their split: www.newyorker.com/archive/2004/08/30/040830fa_fact_paumgarten

Interesting that Joe Torre took the Yanks to the post season 12 years in a row, and now has the Dodgers in first place, while the Yanks are likely to miss the post season. Hank Steinbrenner, who (virtually) fired Torre, recently made a big public statement about all the injuries the Yankees suffered and that's why they aren't likely to be in the post season.
As for Mike and Mad Dog.... never liked them. Far too arrogant. Like listening to Joe Theisman and Dan Dierdorf doing football and announcing the obvious as though they were bestowing nuggets of pure genius on us poor, unworthy viewers who have absolutely no clue about the game.

Not very surprising when you consider that he's now managing in NL West, the worst division in baseball, where the winner might have a sub .500 record and the Yankees are in the best division in the AL, with the AL's 2nd and 3rd best teams
