Any list that includes Mutombo but not Sleepy or Reggie is fatally flawed.

Great post. Though I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't flip flop the top 2 for top "athlete." AI was a sick football player too.

Good to see Andrew Campbell, the Georgetown athlete of the decade as far as I'm concerned.
Still, though, Al Blozis remains the king. Two-sport All-America, 1941 UPI Athlete of the Year (an honor shared with Joe Louis and Ben Hogan), and probably the only NFL offensive lineman that could throw a football 90 yards on the fly.

Well said, DFW. He was also a war hero (died in France in WWII). My parents went to the same high school as he just a few years after he graduated -- he was quite a legend in Jersey City, where I grew up.

Al Blozis has to be #1. Also, the 2-mile relay team of 50/51 with Boland, Deady, LaPierre and Joyce shattered world records more than once but no mention. Like everything else Hoya this get slanted to more recent athletes.

Alright, I don't mean to rag on a guy who is obviously very accomplished and certainly someone the school should be proud of, but....sailing? It reminds me of a quote from Kingpin about bowlers: it's kind of humbling to be in the presence of so many great athletes.
Again, I'm sure he's quite skilled, but to call him a top-10 all-time athlete is a different matter.

In terms of actual accomplishment in his field he has far surpassed all of the lacrosse and baseball players listed ahead of him. Does Tiger Woods (not that Andrew is on his level of dominance, but similar questions of "is it a sport?" apply) deserve a spot in Stanford's Top 10?

Ed-
First, Stanford doesn't deserve a top 10. End of story.
I completely understand what you're getting at. But there are a lot of people that would argue that Tiger isn't the greatest "athlete" in the world, merely the best at his sport (please please please let's not start debating Tiger).
How do you define athlete? In terms of pure athleticism (speed, strength, eye-hand coordination, etc), I have a hard time thinking that he's been one of our top 10 athletes. If, as you put it, it's a matter of accomplishment in his field, then sure. But that's not the same thing as athleticism, in my mind. But I recognize it's one of those unanswerable debates.

I would argue that the perennial winner of the Sears Trophy for all-around athletic excellence probably could come up with a decent Top 10. I also think that is fairly common to use "athlete" as a synonym for "competitor," not necessarily meaning the 10 most "athletic" individuals to attend the school.

Although the Georgetown ranking isn't that bad, you have to hope this was not a 10-1 in order when you view the Notre Dame top Athletes. Brady Quinn #3, Montana #7, Theisman #6.

How can Paul Hornung not be on the list over those three? Dear SI: none of the players on your list possess Heisman trophies. The Golden Boy himself, as well as former Notre Dame starting QBs Johnny Lujack, Angelo "The Springfield Rifle" Bertelli and John Huarte (who do) might protest, as do I.

Dummies. Don't you pay any attention? Notre Dame's greatest athlete is Dan Ruettiger. Well, it's either him or Ron Powlus.
Similarly, I expect Tyler Hansbrough to be UNC's #1, followed by Tyler's heart (#2), Tyler's grit (#3), Tyler's intensity (#4) Tyler's bloody nose (#5), Tyler's work ethic (#6), Tyler's desire (#7), Tyler's hustle (#8), Tyler's drive (#9), and Michael Jordan (#10).
But just so I don't contribute even more to this thread being moved to the Pro & College board, I can't think of a better pure athlete I've ever seen at Georgetown than Allen Iverson.
(Apologies to Al Blozis, I'm sure you're right DFW, I just don't know enough and obviously never saw him play.)
I would say Dikembe has to be a pretty good athlete to have lasted as long as he has, so no problems there.
But if they're trying to represent all sports, I'm surprised there are no more track people, one of Georgetown's more accomplished programs. (Besdies, SI, do you really need an excuse to have a picture of, say, Kari Bertrand?)
