We need Jeff to stick around for four years. That might be a bit of a stretch especially if he grows three more inches. The way Jeff is playing now, he may be gone in two years. There's still so much time this season for him to make a national impact. Imagine if we make the NCAAs and he blows up for a triple-double in a tournament game, and puts in 25 points in another? At this point in his freshman year, I don't think it was very likely that Carmelo Anthony was going to go pro after one season. But by the time the national media hype-machine was done with him after the surprising National Championship run, it seemed like he had been a star forever.

In fact, it was believed that he would skip College all together. At the high all-star game, I think it was here in D.C., it was the Carmelo and Amare Stoudamire show. He was considered one of the top players in the country. Everybody thought he was going to go pro and he shocked everybody when he chose to go to college at Syracuse. He was legit to begin with, and proved throughout the season and post-season tournaments that he was a special player.

If what I wrote compels you to designate me "President of the Rudy Gay Fan Club" then have it your way, pun definitely intended. But that would be a clear cut case of you having no idea what you're talking about. 'Cause you really don't know who I am. 'Specially if you make comments like that.
When it comes to Hoya fanism, brother, trust me -- I can go toe to toe with the best.
So what if the shortsighted, didn't-do-their-homework media continues to tout Gay? Isn't that par for the course? We feel our kid's better. I can live happily with that fact and their myopia. I guess you can't.
The truth, as they say, shall set you free....

I think one of the things we are forgetting here is minutes played and the role each is being asked to play. Gay starts but he doesnt play 40 minutes like Green, the offense also doesnt run through Gay. Gay is a talented kid who would have a lot more action if he played for the Hoyas because of our lack of depth. That being said, Green is definately the Freshman of the Year so far, but Gay is a very athletic player too.

That's why I suggested Jeff might be gone in two years rather than Carmelo's one. You can't dispute that there was far more national hype about Carmelo by the end of the tournament than there had been at the beginning. People thought Charlie Villaneuva would go pro without college too. But he didn't have the kind of impact Carmelo did, and therefore didn't generate the hype. So now he's back for a second year, which would have seemed totally unlikely a year ago.

We know they play different roles, but just watch Gay the next time he is on television, and watch what he does, if anything. You don't have to be the focal point of an offense to contribute. He really doesn't show anything to indicate he is a great player at this moment.

But we don't know if he could hold up if he was asked to do as much as Green is asked. So we should never penalize Green for his minutes. UConn has lost their share of games in which Gay has been invisible or didn't do enough. If he is the ROY then he must STEP up and lead UConn to victories (or do the little things) like Jeff has done for GU.

So now he's back for a second year, which would have seemed totally unlikely a year ago. Villanueva also looked terrible in his workouts - I forget where I read this, but he was lazy and unimpressive and half of the pro scouts had walked out after 5 minutes. So I think the hype on Villanueva was generally deflated by the time he enrolled in college anyway, so it was no suprise when he wasn't tearing it up at UConn -- as for Gay and Anthony - both were thought to be top, top talent...

The only similarities that Carmelo and Gay share, is the fact they are from Baltimore. Carmelo was all that he was billed. Gay isn't. I have yet to see Rudy Gay do anything on the basketball court to make himself stand out.

I think its clear that Jeff is the best freshman in the league. At the same time, I also think we should stop bashing Rudy Gay. He's not performing up to his talent right now, but having also seen him play numerous times, I think that we are doing a disservice by bashing him. He's probably going to be a great one, if things ever start clicking for him. He sure does have the talent. I think that we can easily make a case for Jeff as the better player right now, without making Rudy Gay out to be a no-talent bum.

pPeople continue to point out that Gay isnt as big a role and doesnt get as many minutes but they fail to realize that even when he has been in he hasnt done that well. He's got talent but at this point I dont know if he'll ever be better than Jeff... A question: If Jeff Green hits 6-10 or 6-1 is there any chance of him playing sf or is he a definite pf?

Rudy's an incredible athlete with great skills, but the basketball IQ just isn't the level of Jeff's (yet). Jeff's also got a leg up on aggression, I think.
That said, I think Rudy will be considered a better pro prospect. His potential is ridiculous. Will he reach it? I hope so, but I hope it isn't at UConn.

Jeff could be a SF right now. In our offense, it doesn't really matter much. He's great at keying the whole thing from the top of the lane. He plays inside and outside. He does everything, so it's not as if he's not getting to show off all his skills. If he grows another inch, he's just going to be that much more unstoppable.
I've got nothing against Rudy Gay. In fact, we might even owe JG to his decision to string along UMd for so long. If he had gone to UConn earlier, Gary Williams might have gotten aggresive about loking for another forward to take that scholarship. That he screwed the Twerps AND chose a BE school puts him a leg up in my book.
He is a NASTY athlete. He's not as good as JG today.

He's tough enough to bang with the centers, and on the other end, that matchup gives him an incredible edge in quickness.

Jeff just needs a little work on his ball handling and he could play SF. Every time he's on the wing, I know he can get to the hoop...but he looks awkward and out of position.

Who was making Carmelo/Villaneuva/Gay comparisons?
I was simply making the point that with two monthes (possibly) left to impress NBA scouts and the national media, Green might be gone sooner rather than later.
This has nothing to do with Rudy Gay.
