Over 400 Hoya alumni, football parents, and friends attended the Blue & Gray spring scrimmage and cookout on Saturday.
The Hoyas split up into offensive and defensive squads. It was an evenly matched scrimmage, with the defense winning the day.
Following the scrimmage, Coach Kelly announced junior offensive lineman Dan Matheny and senior defensive end Nicholas Umar as team captains for next season. Umar will be wearing the #35 jersey, in honor and memory of former Hoya football player Joe Eacobacci who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The Robert Paul Dahut Memorial Award for most improved offensive and defensive players were awarded to senior tight end Collin Meador and junior defensive end Jared Myers.
Following the scrimmage, there was a cookout for all in attendance sponsored by the Gridiron Club and the GU Football Parents Association. The Georgetown University Grilling Socieity manned the grills.
Although opening day is still five months away, the Gridiron Club, under the leadership of its new President, Jim Lenihan, and the GU Football Parents Association have been making plans for next season. There will be tailgates and events at all home games for all alumni and football parents and their guests, and tailgates at all road contests.
Fundraising is a high priority. The GU Athletic Department has significantly increased funding for football, however supplemental
funding from alumni, football parents and friends of the football program is not yet where it needs to be.
To make a contribution to the Gridiron Club, contact Doug Yapp at Hoya Unlimited, 202-687-6285, or email at dey4@georgetown.edu.
Looking forward to an exciting 2008 season.
