Just saw this on some sort of Louisville blog - apparently, he has already dropped out of school and hadn't attended class IN WEEKS. Sorry if this is clutter, but I thought it was instructive as to what we're up against, and what goes on at some of the other programs in the Big East. What a joke uoflcardgame.com/caracter-gone/

I think at the very least he should be going to class as much as possible.
I understand getting ready for the draft, but there's a good possibility that Caracter won't have a very long career in the NBA.

Noone on this board could be even remotely surprised by this. What took a moment to digest, however, is that he ann0unced his departure BEFORE THEIR SEASON WAS OVER!
Kid has natural talent, unlimited potential, modest numbers, and absolutely ZERO drive to succeed.

Actually, it's not cheating at all. I'm pretty sure he was still enrolled at U of L during the tournament. The NCAA does not concern itself with class attendance; that is up to the schools/coaches to enforce. The NCAA is more concerned about legislating important policy, like gambling & where on your jersey you can place memorial patches.

Of course given the track records of both Messrs. Caracter and Pitino it is easy to believe this story. But perhaps we should hold on a minute before accepting the truth of some blog post. After all, (slightly) more reputable sources than this published that Jeff Green had stopped going to class last spring, and to date I do not believe Barker Davis has retracted that report.

Dunno - all blogs aren't alike. This one looks like a reputable source tied in to all things about Louisville athletics.
Barker, if I recall, based his report on rumors from this very board. Sloppy, sloppy journalism

i don't know about jeff last spring, but i do know he was on campus the first two weeks of the fall semester this year, and told me in passing that he was finishing up some summer classes, among other things.

As Rick Pitino said, "You want your players to be three things - hardworking, coachable and talented. Derrick has one of those qualities."

The NCAA does not concern itself with class attendance; that is up to the schools/coaches to enforce. The NCAA is more concerned about legislating important policy, like gambling & where on your jersey you can place memorial patches. It's not cheating, but it is unfortunate. I'm not sure what the NCAA could do about it, the player is leaving, what does he care? But it would be nice if they would have some expectation to at least finish out the semester they're playing in. I suppose the NCAA could punish the school, but I guess that's already factored in with the graduation rate measurements. On our end, I'm pretty sure the Hoyas have a couple of these cases though. I don't think Victor Page went to too many classes after his sophomore season ended, and I doubt he was the only one. Another famous example being Carmello Anthony, who basically stopped going to class in January, but still had defenders like moron Jay Mariotti saying, after the NCAA championship: "this kid loves the college life too much; he's definitely coming back for another year." Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone loves the college life, particularly when it doesn't involve classes or studying. Then again, I stopped going to class pretty much all of my second semester senior year -- and I didn't even have a job waiting for me, much less a multi-million dollar contract -- so who am I to judge?

If I recall correctly, Allen Iverson also stopped going to class (and sported a new car) just as soon as the season/tournaments ended.

If I recall correctly, FormerHoya stopped going to class for weeks at a time. Unfortunately, he graduated, and was drafted into a law firm.

Yeah, and if the story I heard is true, Big John told AI to get rid of the car that day.
Also, Jeff 100% did continue going to classes last spring, and as is mentioned in another threat, both he and Durant are taking classes this summer at their respective schools. I really love that. It's more surprising for Durant b/c it will take him about 15 summers to graduate, but hey, it's the thought that counts. His head and heart are in the right place.
QUESTION: If you complete a degree over the summer, do they let you walk to following year? I assume for Jeff, they ABSOLUTELY would, and should. That's something everyone should appreciate, if he pulls it off.

Sloppy, sloppy journalism And what sort of reputable information do you think this blog post is based on? Does UL take attendance and make those records public? Is one of the bloggers an academic dean at UL?

The only thing I can recall about my second semester senior year is that I was at The Tombs a whole lot. I can't remember if I had any classes down there or not, but based on my tab I think I may have paid tuition to the Clyde's Restaurant Group.

While this is a tantalizing story, it's really an unverified rumor. If not true, it's unfair to the player - the major reason we don't allow this kind of stuff about GU players here. Call it caracter assassination. As for whether there was a retraction issued last year, I remember reading a weak semi-acknowledgment that Green actually was attending class in an article written by another writer a week or two after the original rumor was printed, hedging by saying something like "multiple sources" had said the same thing.
