Adam Rittenberg (Gottlieb Jr.), wrote an article for espn essentially chalking up another "lucky" victory for our Hoyas. I have been a pessimist all season, as i've felt we haven't played up to our potential...that being said, we stepped up when we needed to today... I know this is clutter in a way, but i feel like this article needs its own thread,... my fav. part being "Neither did Marquette, which received tremendous performances from Matthews (season-high 22 points), Jerel McNeal (17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists) and James (15 points)." I am concerned that another Gottlieb is on our hands... McNeal was 5-21 from the floor, and 7-12 from the line...if that is a "tremendous performance"- i deserve a DI scholarship. Rittenberg also claims that that John wasn't fouled on his three atrempt... even though the replay clearly shows a chop to his wrist... espn continues to give themselves black eyes with these awful hires... here's the link sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?id=3272542

To compare the late call on James to the Villanova game is just plain absurd. There was clearly contact and no one was arguing... James just made a stupid play! Seems like this guy has some bias that he is not good at hiding....
Like this line of his... "Georgetown rescued again? No doubt."
And since when is there a 'GU and Officiating' conspiracy that this guys alludes to other than on the Internets?
The only reason to mention the late Villanova foul is to talk about JW's free throws. Stone cold, like Roy said!!!

There's no comparison between the two endings. Regardless of that, Marquette still had 5 minutes after the free throws to prove it was the better team and it didn't get it done. WE ARE...

Here is what the Marquette beat writer had to say about all that: blogs.jsonline.com/muhoops/archive/2008/03/01/wrapping-up-georgetown.aspxAside from the fact that he apparent lapse in logic about whether Wallace would have hit the three in the corner (did he watch the overtime and the banked in three at the end of the shot clock? ... Wallace was not missing that three), he saw the play through remarkably unbiased eyes. While he mentions the contention Wallace might not have been attempting a shot, it's clear he doesn't subscribe to that weak sauce. As for the "there was no foul" argument, FLHoya made a good point in the other thread that the ball caromed away at an odd angle when it would have gone straight upwards if there had been no contact.

The fact is people just love to hate the Hoyas. Not only was Wallace fouled, he was hacked. It amazed me how the College Game Day crew just glosses over our game. No mention of this being a good win for Georgetown, no mention of this teams resiliency, no mention of our senior leadership. All I kept hearing is how Roy barely elevated on his layup with a minute left, how Crean should have called a time out, and how Wallace was lucky when he banked his 3 in (well I guess he was a little lucky with that). In the end, the HOYAS WIN... WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It still feel good a day later.

Well said, Dan. I think this Rittenberg chap is just trying to stir the pot. Clearly the headline writers and ESPN.com bit in.
It's garbage and any comparisons with Nova are insane. If I was Nova, I'd be offended by that suggestion. That was a lousy call that practically gave us the win in a tie game, this was a lousy decision by James. Big difference.
Plus, I always love the conspiracy talk for this reason: They shot more free throws than we did ... did the refs call a psychic and know how the game would end? Free throws count for one point at the start of the game and the end of the game. If there's a conspiracy it should be the Eagles tanking 7 of their first 8 from the line.
I've never liked that ref with the flawless gray hair either, I always thought he let things go in the first and then railed against contact like a nun at a catholic middle school dance in the second. Just wish he'd be more consistent.

I thought it was the game of the day, and certainly the best comeback - save NC coming back against a team that is 13-14, 4-11. Instead, this is the byline today -"Georgetown sang its praises after parlaying a late foul call into an improbable win. Think you've heard this tune before? You have. Adam Rittenberg." I just want to stomp on L'ville. I want us to keep scoring when we are winning by 15, just like we did against Pitt in the final last year.

Dan, That is the point to be made, and I'm glad someone did it. The whole play reminded me of the Colin Flops 4 pointer in January 2006 when he goaded Bobo into playing defense and kicked his leg out. Now, Wallace didn't do anything cheap like that, but the point is that the defender has to pick and choose his spots. In yesterday's game, Wallace was in the deep corner, where he normally does not shoot and fading away, which he does not do well. Why are you going for the strip there? Play straight up defense and take your chances.

1. Dominic James fouled JWall while shooting a 3 with about 4 minutes left in the game (a prelude to his insane hack at the end that NEEDED to get called) but he didn't learn his lesson. that play should have served as a warning for him while defending a running 3 that I have NEVER seen JWall hit (the MASTER of the set shot, pretty much). James just exposed his careless defence the same way his questionable shot selection can be questioned for MUCH of his career. The Ref made the RIGHT call - whether it's 2 seconds INTO the game, or LEFT in the game - a HACK NEEDS to be CALLED. I'm not bashing DJ because it is NONSENCE for anyone to come on here and do that to any person playing their hearts out for their school (like is constantly done during the in-game threads by some of the guys that think they are superior in their basketball acumen to JT III). I do wish the kid the best (against everyone who does not have GEORGETOWN in the front of their jerseys) - but HE DID FOUL JWALL TWICE in the last four minutes of the game while shooting a 3, watching our MAN hit 5 of 6 from the line in a two point loss. I'm sure he's glad to have the focus be on some conspiracy theory...
2. DOUG GOTTLIEB, as we ALL KNOW, gets paid for his job and so I'll say it for us all ... HE'S AN IDIOT!! His bias against Georgetown CANNOT be questioned!! I look for things like balanced or unbalanced reporting (with politics too) and he is SO ANTI-Georgetown it's not even debatable (nor do I really care WHAT that idiot thinks). Notice whenever Georgetown is playing, if we are ahead he will NOT say one word about it at all. We played at the 'Ville on Feb. 9th in the Big Saturday game, and were ahead at the half, yet he and Brennan (who I do think is more knowledgeable and tries to be more objective) DID NOT EVEN MENTION OUR GAME AT ALL - focussing ONLY on all the rest of the scores of the day from all the "future one and two seeds". But then the next week - we're getting HAMMERED at the cuse at the half and we had a WHOLE SEGMENT from the IDIOT of why "G'town is the MOST overrated team in CBB - I've been saying it for so long now...." BLATANT. When we win, it's because "that's a walk", or "that's a foul", or "that's NOT a foul", or "that's a goal tend"... WHAT A TOOL. My favorite was the IDIOT'S answer last year on how we got to the FF... "they just improved since the early part of the season.." (in fairness, probably some of the truth) - but it was another way of saying "(I'm) not wrong about the hoyas.. They just got better".. EFF him and anyone else that want to hate on our Hoyas.. Bottom Line is our Guys are Classy and Tougher and learning to play with the SNARL they need to so they can KICK A$$ in SAN ANTONIO!!
3. I will NOT be shocked if the BEAST get's cheated when it comes to seeding for the Dance. The ACC has two superior teams (by their standards this year) and a bunch of average to below average teams; so does the Pac 10 (6 of their 10 teams have 10 or more losses), same with the SEC and Big 12. It is widely acknowledged that the BEAST is the best, if not the second best conference, surely is the DEEPEST and BEST from 1 to 8. This means EVERY night is a BATTLE against HIGH QUALITY TEAMS, and to go 6-3 on the road in the conference (like the HOYAS did) this year is AWESOME. Yet, a TOUGH Win at #21 Marquette is glossed over, while what I consider to be lucky wins (or average) against 2 non-tournament teams (BC and NCState) for unc and duke, will keep them ahead of us in the polls. What would Memphis' record be, or Tenn., or unc or duke or even kansas and ucla if THEY had our league schedule? I SURE do hope the Selection Committee is paying attention, if everyone else in the media want to buy into the pathetic perceptions. Like NEVER before I'm hoping to see the BEAST PROVE ourselves with AT LEAST 3 teams in the EE and two in the FF.

Just did some stat checking. At the 13 minute mark in the second half, James made a three to put marquette up 9. From that point on, they made only 3 field goals, all inside the paint, two on offensive rebounds, one on a steal. in other words, in 18 minutes their half-court offense made 0 field goals. In 18 minutes they scored 6 points from the field and 16 points from the line. Also, in those 18 minutes there were 11 fouls called against marquette, 11 called against georgetown. i guess my point is this: more than 2/3 of their points down the stretch came from the free throw line, and the fouls were even. there is no reason for them to complain about the officiating.

To throw Doug Gottleib a small bone, on Saturday's Midnight Madness CBB wrap-up show on ESPN, talking about UNC after their victory over BC, Gottleib stated (paraphrasing): "On Monday, North Carolina may be ranked #1, but at this point in time they do not play good enough defense to beat the elite teams like Memphis, Tennessee, Kansas, UCLA, and Georgetown. "
I was as surprised as anyone.

On sports.espn.go.com/ncb/index , the Big East tab leads the article as "Georgetown is starting to make a habit of winning games just when it seems the Hoyas are going to be on the losing end." This seems a better spin.

Followed by a more sober Tar Heel reminding everyone of how Carolina couldn't either defend or score against Georgetown in the final 15 minutes of game not too long ago with a trip to the Final Four at stake. (Unfortunately, this wise UNC person probably got flayed alive by the rest of the fans after posting that). ;D

What's funny about the article is that the author never claims that Wallace wasn't fouled on the three, he just mentions that it was called. I guess given the circumstance sof the game he decided to make the refs and issue when they really weren't. don't foul three point shooters. or better yet, if you're up three with two seconds left, foul the guy before he shoots.
