The NCAA (or CBS) has started marketing DVD copies of old NCAA games at the following web site
www.ncaaondemand.com/composite_sports/men-s-basketball
This is a fantastic opportunity to get copies of games that every Hoya fan should have including last year's Carolina game, and game winners by Charles Smith, Don Reid and Nat Burton.
Of the vintage games (i.e those that pre-date the birth of certain board members) I would recommend the following:
Hoyas vs. Kansas in the 1987 round of 16. Reggie goes off for 34 against Danny manning in what might have been Reggie and the Miracles best game.
Hoyas vs St Johns in the national semi in 1985. St John's had 5 future #1's on this team and the Hoyas beat them 3 out of 4 that year. Watch David Wingate play great D on Chris Mullin.
The 1984 national championship win over Houston, our only one - so far.
The 1984 semi-final win vs. Kentucky. This is an absolute must have as the quintessential example of Hoya defense. See why Gene Smith and Michael Graham are Hoya greats.
The 1982 National Championship game. You've seen the last 20 seconds way too many times, but this was a well played game that introduced the Hoyas to the national conscience featuring the young Ewing and a superior Sleepy Floyd.
All of these games are immediately available. In addition, you can pre-order other games that have not yet made it to DVD. The good news is that the site seems to be making new DVDs available at a fairly rapid rate and indications of interest are clearly influencing what gets put to DVD. Among these pre-orderable games I would suggest:
The 1996 regional semi vs Texas Tech. See why Othella Harrington was the top ranked high school player in his class and would have had an even better Hoya career if only John Thompson Jr. would have got it out of his mind that Othella had to be anchored in the low post.
The 1982 national semi vs Louisville. Another absolute must have. Louisville had a lot of the same great athletes that had won the 1980 NCAA. This Hoya win remains the most intense defensive basketball game that I have ever seen. A pre-injury Fred Brown is the MVP.
Finally, there is the suggestion that one might be able to acquire the 1980 Hoya-Iowa East regional final although technical difficulties are cited. I suspect that the technical difficulty is the computer animation necessary to make it look like John Duren actually did go over and back on a critical late game call. In any case, this was a tremendous basketball game - Iowa won by one point - that many vintage fans (I prefer the term to older) consider the most crushing loss ever suffered by the program. This would be a chance to see both Big Sky Shelton and John Duren at their best.
Even if you think that you might not ultimately buy these - as yet - unpublished DVDs, I would urge HoyaTalk board members to put in a non-binding pre-order to get these games in print.
