C'mon saxifrage, pointless lessons on English usage and the history thereof is one of the things that makes HoyaTalk great!
And yeah, someone who actually heard the interview: what was said?

as i type this post, big john has john feinstein on his radio show talking about the kelvin sampson debacle Feinstein has been on JT's show quite a few times over the last four seasons. They buried the hatchet (well, most of it) just before III was hired as coach.

AN as in the article AN should be used in front of words beginning with AN "h" Not exactly. Old reference books on American usage typically say "an" is proper before words that both (1) begin with "h" and (2) have the stress somewhere other than the first syllable. So, "A history of Georgetown" and "A happy man" (in both cases, the stress is on the first syllable of the "h" word) but "AN historical account" and "AN heretical doctrine" (in both cases, the stress is on the second syllable of the "h" word). Note, by the way, that almost all American newspapers and magazines have dropped this distinction and now use "an" only before vowels. The British publications typically still retain it. Here endeth today's pointless lesson in the history of English usage. haha...I love the A vs. AN debates. Like today in class... we were talking about MxN matrices and you say AN M by N matrix even though M is a consonant. Things like that amuse me.

I know everyone knows that, but I just had to join in on this completely off-topic thread.

Eddie Izzard would be proud of this conversation.
"You say 'erbs, but we British say herbs....because there's a f***ing 'H' in there, isn't there?"
