I have been yelling this at the television screen since the second half of the louisville game, until, miraculously, in the second half guys started to fire.
Our guards have been so tentative about shooting when they get looks, they don't get into a rhythem and teams are able to sag and recover because they know we wont catch and fire. In the second half yesterday something clicked. We stopped pump faking threes only to drive and make a bad pass/get stripped as we did pretty much every possession against Syracuse, and fired if given the chance. Tyler started it with his three, and then Rivers three over a man lunging at him almost made me cry. If this team is going to succeed our guards have to be confident in shooting the three if given a look. This opens up the inside and offensive rebounding opportunities.
Great game, and I hope our guards continue to fire if given the chance.

In addition to that, how many times can they pass the ball to each other within 3 feet of the basket and not go up strong with it? Those couple sequences yesterday were maddening. You get that close and you gotta be thinking shoot first, and there is no way that is what Jeremiah is thinking.
As much as I love the "extra pass" for the "perfect shot," the way that have been doing it sometimes is killing me.

Completely agree. Anyone within 12 ft of the hoop and a look should be thinking shot with the obvious exception being when a man is standing wide open under the glass. We couldnt break the zone against cuse because no one wanted to take a midrange shot or put it up in traffic. We were looking for nothing but dunks and layups that simply were not there. Start making some midrange shots and suddenly those opportunities will present themselves.

You get that close and you gotta be thinking shoot first, and there is no way that is what Jeremiah is thinking. As much as I love the "extra pass" for the "perfect shot," the way that have been doing it sometimes is killing me. Strummer and I mentioned this in the post-game thread, but it merits broader discussion in this thread, I think. Getting the ball into the paint regularly has been a very positive development of the past two games. People have been driving a bit more, and JTIII has clearly been focusing on getting a guy to the FT line to give an extra option to pass the ball in. This positive, however, was negative throughout almost the entire 'Cuse game, as the guys kept on making an intra-paint pass, and every freaking time it resulted in a TO and fast break points for the Orangepeople. As I stated on the post-game thread, I think this extra pass was the primary reason we let Syracuse jump all over us. In the Providence game, the guys did that a bit in the first half, but it finally started clicking that they could...gasp!...shoot the ball when they had it in the paint! It was so nice to see them going to the hoop instead of passing to a confused teammate and turning the ball over every trip in the lane. We scored most times, and even when the team didn't score, it gave a rebound chance and negated any chance of a TO-->fastbreak. This was an overwhelming positive of the Providence game, and continued smarts combined with the recent penetration in the lane should be the key to higher offensive production for the rest of the season. In my opinion, anyway.

Agree 100% and said so in the Syracuse post-game thread. We actually attacked the zone well right up until the extra pass. Sometimes you need some self-internal jealousy and I think it is something that is more easily corrected than other issues.

Attacked the zone much better yesterday. However, Summers has to start hitting that foul line jumper in the soft spot of the zone.

We attacked the zone much better yesterday. Beating the zone is EASY. Just move the ball very quickly around the perimeter and flash to the low post. Wide open shots every time. It drives me nuts when the wing player holds the ball. Just keep firing it around the defense can't stop it.
Tyler "gets" it and was the main reason why we came back. he also set a sweet screen for Wallace for the goahead 3. Same play as in the east region final againt NC...

Prediction: This thread will result in a new record of FOEVA spastic, non-sensical, jealousy-laden stream-of-thought posts.
I also think this thread has the potential to cause him to post something that gets him banished to the land of baselinejournal.
I am all for it. As a wise man once said, get your popcorn!

I don't mind the extra pass down low when it's a patented Ewing behind-the-neck pass to Roy for a dunk. Ustoppable! ;D

I don't disagree. The fact that we were executing our offense against the 2-3 and finding that shot--which should be readily available--is certainly a good start.
