Expect this to be the first in a series of threads. ESPN's Around the Rim lists the 15th-best player as Magic Johnson. Ewing was 16th. Really, I don't get this. Part of the analysis problem is that Magic stayed two years. But Ewing was a second-team All-America his freshman season and an All-America thre next three years. The Hoyas made three championship games during his tenure, winning one and losing two very close ones.

I have a sinking feeling that this list will really just end up being a who's who of the NBA (i.e. Jordan cracks the top 10 or something like that). I thought 16 seemed low for Ewing and Sampson was what 20th?? That's rediculous for someone on his caliber.

Yeah, when I saw Pat at 16 and then Magic at 15 I thought the same thing - what a joke if you are talking about college only. Oh well, it's ESPN so I guess we shouldn't expect anything other than superficiality and "big name hunting."

#1 is either going to be Kobe or Lebron

I wasn't even a Hoya fan back then and Ewing was dominant for FOUR years. You figure Bird has to get in there as well as Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem, Walton? but how could there be fifteen better. No one in the 90's or 00's would qualify because they all leave early. THis should be interesting.

I agree--I was surprised to see Magic so high, especially over Patrick. I would say the top 3 spots have to be Walton, Alcindor and Maravich......not sure of the order. I think I'd have to think long and hard about giving Pistol Pete the top spot. Sure is tough to see so many guys be better than Ewing and Sampson though.........

I HATE them, but you have to have Laetner and probably Hurley on the list very high. Ugh, I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Although I don't agree with it, Jordan will be #1, just like he is on any other list ESPN puts together.

when your player makes the list of the 25 college basketball players of all time, is there really a huge difference between being #1 and #25? every year there are about 5000 D-1 players (this has increased in the past 10 years significantly i will note) but there have been close to 150,000 D-1 (?) players in D-1 history. the top 25 represent .016667% of the players.

I think the Top 3 will be Walton, Alcindor and Robertson. With Laettner, Maravich, Russell, Wilt and the big mistake -- Jordan -- in the Top 10.

Ewing not being in the Top 10 at least is a sin. Insane actually.
Magic only played two years....Ewing is an all time great college player.

Laettner deserves to be in the Top 5 in my opinion. As a college basketball player not many were more successful.

Chamberlain and Alcindor should be the top two but the list is meaningless since there will be little consideration to the earlier players like Mikan and Cousy and a bunch of others.

Typical ESPN bullcrap. I'll wait to see who they have above Ewing-in my opinion he's a top 10 college player--and the single player who changed the coverage of CBB--they can talk about Bird/Magic all they want--it was the Hoyas who made the Big East, got Big Monday going, had interest all over--from fans to haters--and were the symbol of CBB as it grew. When you talk of 1980's CBB--I'd say 80% of fans would answer Patrick Ewing when asked who is the player you remember most from 1980's?
With that said--UCLA Centers should be in top 5--Kareem--aka Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Wilt, Russell, Oscar Robertson, and I have no problems with Laettner being in top 10--he went to Final 4 every year of his career--played in 3 title games--winning 2.
With that said--it would be a disgrace to place Michael Jordan in the top 25 CBB of all time--Len Bias was a better CBB player--and the best player I saw in ACC during my time watching CBB. He was a player I think could've been better then Jordan in NBA as well--but sadly, we'll never know. Jordan wasn't as dominant as James Worthy was at UNC.
Hakeem Olajuwon will be ahead of Ewing too--and that would be wrong--Ewing beat Olajuwon for the National Championship--played 4 years compared to 3, and while Hakeem went to 2 title games-and 3 Final Fours, I don't think Houston faced the competition that Ewing/Hoyas did. Great player--but not as good as Ewing-and he'll be ahead of Patrick.
Of course--knowing ESPN--they'll have Jordan #1, Shane Battier of Duke #2, Tyler "Psycho T" Hansbrough #3, and Chris Duhon #4, Johnny Dawkins #5, Dave Popson #6, JR Reid #7, Greg Koubek #8, Gerry McNamara #9, and Khalid El Amin #10.

One guy who has been missing from this discussion and is clearly top 10 is David Thompson - single-handedly prevented Walton/UCLA from winning it all in 74...he along with Walton/Bird/Magic dominated the 70s hoop scene...

They'll have Webber somewhere because of the marketability of that team.

i really didn't understand this either. how ewing is not in the top ten is really beyond me. he certainly built our program and is an iconic figure in college basketball.

Chamberlain and Alcindor should be the top two but the list is meaningless since there will be little consideration to the earlier players like Mikan and Cousy and a bunch of others. Mikan made the Top 25, and they've actually had a bunch of older players. I fail to see how Chamberlain should be above Walton (who lost one game in college, I think) or Russell, who won two national titles at USF! to Wilt's zero at Kansas, or the Big O (two titles at Cincy).
