Let me start my rant by saying that we did not lose to Syracuse because of officiating, and in the last several games, we have had as many calls in our favor as against us.
......BUT I am enjoying watching the Hoyas less and less because of the inconsistency of the referees' calls.
There are times when the referees let the players absolutely mug each other, and then they will literally call a touch foul.
It is almost to the point where it is impossible to determine what the referees think is and isn't a foul. I thought at least three of the fouls on Hibbert today against Syracuse were absolute fiction (the first two and then the 4th foul on Flynn).
They called a foul on Rivers in the second half as his opponent was rounding a screen up top when he could hardly even reach out and touch his man.
Having such inconsistency in foul calling makes watching a lot less enjoyable.
Is it me or are any of you noticing the same?

can we PLEASE go one fuggin game without someone starting up a fuggin officiating thread?
I mean are you serious? Newsflash: referees are IMPERFECT. onuaku got mugged by summers early in the first half that went uncalled. It happens both ways.
I know that is the point of your thread, but just deal with it. refs not named donaghy don't throw games intentionally... until you can somehow find the college basketball equivalent to the tennis machine that calls faults on serves, why start a thread like this??

In a way, I agree with both williambrasky and jwp. It is very frustrating to have to watch such inconsistency among such a basic part of the game (fouls), but on the other hand, is there really an effective solution to the problem? Referees are imperfect and that's part of the game. As frustrating as it is to watch (much like the inconsistency of the strike zone in baseball), we just have to accept it and look past it for the most part (unless there's a real grievous error).

I thought it cut both ways today. Onuaku got called for a few cheapies and we absolutely mugged him twice with no call for syracuse.

Yeah, Big East reffing is inconsistent and can be improved. Zero reason to bring up the refs after that game though. That first half of basketball was so bad the refs could not have helped us even if they were on the Hoyas' payroll.

No Hoya fan can complain about officiating this year. We have gotten two gift calls (a non goal tend at West Va, and a phantom foul against 'Nova) that have gotten us two wins we probably didn't deserve. Hoyas were terrible yesterday on there own, and as it stands now, we will be lucky to get out of the first weekend of the NCAA's , refs or no refs.

That first half of basketball was so bad the refs could not have helped us even if they were on the Hoyas' payroll. The thing that killed us was the three quick turnover calls at the start of the game. All but one of those were ridiculous and they completely got inside the teams' head. We didn't get a shot off until the fourth possession. We were so rattled after that, we didn't recover until the second half.

It didn't sound to me like jwp was placing any blame on the refs for this game. (In fact, I think that was the first sentence of the post), but rather just commenting on the poor level of officiating in college basketball in general this year (and in the Big East specifically, but I've seen some pretty poor refereeing in the ACC too).
On that, I think a lot of people agree, including our favorite commentator, Jay Bilas.
The refs are inconsistent, plain and simple. No matter what Mr. Potatohead writes about them, the quality of officiating is not good enough. Yes, they're human. Fine. They're also getting paid to do a job. I'd expect some level of performance for that, a higher level than is currently being achieved.
The timing of this thread may not be ideal -- since the refs had nothing to do with the Syracuse loss -- but the content of it is still valid.

syracuse fans blame the refs when they lose, we don't. Some do, most don't. I'm with those in this thread that are just embarrassed by the inconsistencies this year. It's the worst year the stripes have ever had in my opinion - in the Big East anyway. I won't get into the ACC because that's been a joke for a long time. Actually, now that I think about it, the refs have been consistent this year - consistently bad. I watched a Vermont - BU game a couple weeks ago, and I didn't notice the refs at all. That stood out to me. They called the game, they checked with each other to make sure the call was made correctly, and not one of them put on a show when they made a call. It was really nice. Many of my SU brethren think that Burr has a thing out for us, and that may be true, but that man can not keep up with a Big East game. He's awful. Same thing for Higgins. And they both make the most dramatic calls so they can get their mugs on TV. Awful.
