That was the best 2nd half of basketball we have played in a long time and it looks like we got JWall back.
I think this team is ready to cruise from here on out.

Somewhat agree from an offensive perspective--the defensive lapses (esp. Roy not being in the paint) that allowed SU to stretch the lead from 7 to 17 in the middle of the 2nd half put the game out of reach......

Only if the team gets turnovers under control. Period. We gave them too many fast break points off our turnovers and dug too deep a hole in the first half as a result to surmount.

True we did have a few defensive lapses in the 2nd half but I think all teams have that, its usually not as big of deal but we were down by 7 when they happened.
If Summers can just be a little bit more selective with his shot I think were in shape going forward.

Obviously, he is coached to roam out on the perimeter, but why? It kills us.

What we needs to happen is for Summers or Ewing to realize he is coming out and make sure they are not running the pick and roll.

we are simply missing ingredients. roy cant be the only option. as a result we will live and die by outside shooting. uconn, lville and nd seem to be improving as the season goes on. we on the other hand seem to have plateaued.

We played with tempo and urgency in the second half, instead of this bs passing around the 2-3 for 30 seconds. In my mind, the game was lost in first 8 minutes. Syracuse was just as flat as we were, but we have to insist on this ridiculous pace early in the game to allow teams to stick around. Why cant we come out and sting teams early? We are the 8th ranked team in the country. We should be pushing teams around.

The key to beating a zone in making it move and getting two defenders to guard the ball, this leaves a person wide open, usually on the opposite side or short corner. Did a much better job of this in the second half.

Well after venting on the Premium board on other site--which if you are paying for--is the right place to do so , I came away much happier about the 2nd Half and very frustrated at same time. 1. Why did it take our coaches/team 20 more minutes of awful basketball to figure out what most of this site has seen? Hibbert gets ball--you get good shots. More important you get to TAKE SHOTS--it's nice to see Hoyas get some FGA's up and I didn't even care if they missed-at least they took a good shot. 2. Jon Wallace is playing like Jon Wallace. It's nice to have him back--every shot he took today was a great shot--and he is like anyone else-when shots fall-his defense is far better. Did a nice job today on defensive end. 3. I'd burn the entire video of First Half of this game--show the team the 2nd Half--and leave a message that if you want to contend rest of the year--watch and play for 40 minutes like we saw in the 2nd Half against Syracuse. Urgency, ball movement, going through Hibbert and getting clean/good looks, aggressive approach--and competed hard. 4. Team finally got what was deserved--an ass kicking for playing like hot garbage. It's one thing to play like junk and still be in a game-another to get humiliated. I'm hopeful the Cuse First Half is the "rock bottom" moment of the season. Now they can move forward and just play ball. Don't worry about winning--worry about playing good basketball-and it's amazing when you do that--how the winning will follow. 5. It was nice to see fight/toughness again from Hoyas. Just want to see it for 40 minutes. Toughness/fight isn't about effort alone-it's about answering runs, playing at a high level and forcing a team to match you/surpass you to win/hang in a game and we've not seen that in a longtime. I'm type of fan who cares more about the team is playing--improvement then anything else and if the team plays like they did in 2nd Half-they'll be in every game rest of way and be a contender to win those games. If that team that wore Hoya uniform in First Half shows up--they won't win another game, and wouldn't deserve winning. 6. Some guys on this team have to look in the mirror with how they came out of the gate today. Were they honestly mentally/physically ready to play a game? Vernon Macklin is a young man I've supported since he signed. This appearance today was disgraceful. It's not that he played poorly--it's the fact he didn't show up to compete at all. His play was a symbol of what has been wrong with this team and drew my frustration point to leaving this site and talking about the team on the other. Some think those of us who are critical expect to win every game. That is not true at all. You do expect young men to show up and compete-and do so in a manner where improvement is shown from start of season to end. We finally saw that in 2nd Half and it was nice to see those who weren't there to compete not get rewarded with minutes. Now the message is sent--you earn your time and if you want to play some basketball--show it on the court. I was as low as low could be watching First Half. After 2nd Half--feel good. That game went to team who deserved to win--they showed up for both halves and Hoyas showed up for one. However--you can take something from that half and if you approach every game/every minute rest of season as we saw in 2nd Half--you can still improve-and that is all any fan can ask of their team. Now get after Providence on Monday for 40 minutes and let's turn the season around in a positive manner!

Well said, RDF. I agree completely. The dirty little secret is that this loss probably puts us right where we should be at this season. We probably won a couple of games we shouldnt have, and Lville and Syracuse games have restored order. We are at a crossroads now. A championship caliber teams comes out and blitzes Providence on Monday. A decent team probably loses that game.

I charted the game, and I'm sure this isn't entirely accurate, but my notes say that in the first half, when Roy was in:
we got the ball to him (or tried) on 7 of 13 possessions 2 resulted in a score 1 resulted in a foul 3 resulted in turnovers
On the possessions where we didn't get the ball to him, we scored 3 times.
Make of that what you will. (With Vern in, we got the ball to him on 4 of 5 possessions, 3 turnovers, no scores.)
The second half was obviously much more successful.

Admittedly, I missed the 1st half, because 7am in Hawaii is awfully freaking early to get up on a Saturday morning. So I don't have any comments on that and can only assume the very worst from that half. I'm sure we will see more than our fair share of negative posts from today's game, which will probably all be deserved, but I think as this thread is pointing out, there were many good things out of the 2nd half (thankfully the only half I saw).
1) That call of "He's Back!" at the end of the last game was dead on for the Alabama Rainmaker. I think the desperation of the situation in the 2nd half forced him to play with his old instinct and to stop thinking so much. You could see him just catch and shoot or pop and shoot like we are used to seeing out of Jon before the slump. This could very well be the greatest thing that could happen for the team in the long run this season. We absolutely need the Rainmaker to be making it rain if we expect to get deep in the BE and NCAA Tourney.
2) Despite the questionable decision-making a couple times, Austin finally showed the initiative to take it at the hole consistently. Young guys are bound to make mistakes doing that (just look at Cuse), but we need to attack and Austin did it. It may not work out for this year, but it gives me hope that by next year he will be able to make those decisions consistently.
3) I liked how Dajuan, Pat, and Tyler (I think) roamed the baseline when the ball went to Roy in the high post. It ended up with a couple of real easy baskets off great passes by Roy.
4) In the 2nd half, it seemed like we went to Roy more consistently than I've seen in any half this year. He scored some, but his passing made a big difference in the comeback effort (unfortunately, Roy picked up dumb fouls and wasn't on the court as much as we needed).
5) We showed grit. We actually outscored them by 9 or 10 in the 2nd half, which I really didn't think we had in us because of how weak we've been at the start of the 2nd halves recently and in big games. We came out strong at the beginning of the half and that was important to see that we could make those adjustments at half (I know we let them push the lead back, but the initial push has not been seen this year).
Well, that's it really, but the point is that some of the areas we've struggled with were addressed in the 2nd half and could possibly lead to greater things this year. Despite the fact that we failed to do some of the things we normally do so well, the 2nd half was the first time I've really felt like we were working to address some of our shortcomings and I could see signs of improvement to come. Here's to our next game. Hoya Saxa!

gujook agree we finally got hustling and moving on the offense better d and came out strong just to hard to give up a 21 or 22 point lead and in the first half six field goals and 12 turnovers only two i think in the second half but critical in this game and didnot realize it till iread the box score JWALL IS BACK career high 26 points but more important six assists and six of seven from three yup and nine of ten not bad the shooter has returned so huslte from the beginning hoyas.. fill the glass TOTALLY FULL FOR 40 MINUTES rebbie fouls shots move on d and o adn a few threes need our aplus game mon at providence theyre giving the ville a war and hard to beat there despite one of th eworst hoya halfs ive ever seen i think the glass could be getting real full real soon slump over jwall back and hes the man HUSTLE FROM THE GET GO hit those threes and cant get four guys zoned around roy nope go hoyas let the games begin FRY THE FRIARS ON MON AND NATIONAL TV.. I stopped marking near the end of the game when our offense was more rushed and we were fouling on D. But, before that in the second half when Roy was in:
we went to him on 14 of 21 possessions (including 7 straight when Roy re-entered the game) we were successful on 11 of those 14 we had only one turnover on those 14 we were successful on 3 of the other 7
we were also successful on 5 straight possessions when he was out of the game
So part of it was that we had more possessions with Roy in the game in the second half; part was that we went to him more often; and a lot of it was that we more more successful when we did go to him.

I'm delighted that we showed spunk in the second half and that Wallace seems to have returned from the dead, but as for the prognosis going forward, I'll just wait and see. I'm still waiting to see us put together a complete game - or even 3/4 of a game (UConn excepted; that was a game where I thought both teams played well). That first half was the worst half of basketball I have seen from any team this year, much less a team that is supposedly good. So while I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we continue to spiral downward. This is not a top 25 team at the moment.

Re: Hibbert's touches in second half. Does anyone think that he should take the fifteen open face up jumper from the fouline or elbow? He made one yesterday, and I seem to remember that the D gave him plenty of room if he wanted the uncontested shot. No one else seems to be willing to take that shot against the zone.

Yes. He can make that shot and if he makes them guard him there, he can pass to the open area. When Ewing is in the game, he will cut along the baseline when Roy has the ball at the foul line and then be in offensive rebounding position.

I don't think we need to tell the coach or coaches what to do, they are doing a hell of a job with what we have...we are still dangerous and will always be no matter what...WE ARE GEORGETOWN!!!
